I stayed at the Chicago Houseboat for 3 days in December 2020. And then again for 4 days when all flights were cancelled in January 2021, thanks to the inclement weather conditions. I wanted an independent stay to preserve our bio-bubble during pandemic period, so was inclined towards houseboat. Honestly, I had been advised against choosing a houseboat stay during extreme winters. But the comfort, warmth, privacy and the total experience of Chicago Houseboat exceeded all expectations.
Heating with Electric blankets and Bukhari was very fascinating and effective. Hospitality was warm, welcoming, thoughtful and made us feel valued. Attitude of the Mr Ajaz Khar and his team was courteous, humble, gentle and warm. If you contact him directly, you could even get some add-ons like free airport pickup. Food cooked by Rashida and served warmly by Khizr Mohammad was wholesome. We just couldn’t have enough of their heartwarming Kahawa. Shikara rides to and from the ghats were memorable and just a phone call away. The Taxi driver Tariq, arranged by Mr Ajaz, was also very dependable, caring and efficient. Power outages in Kashmir are very frequent but in this place we never realised it because they had good backup system.
The boat we were on was more like a 3BHK and had 3 bedrooms with 3 washrooms, a sitting room, a dining room, a kitchenette and a beautiful deck to soak in the beauty of Dal Lake. I loved to have my breakfast on the deck. Everything was in exquisitely carved wood and all floors had thick wall to wall carpets. If you sit on the deck long enough, some vendors on shikaras could accost you with their wares like trinkets, shawls, papier-mâché, flowers, wood artifacts etc. At different times of the day you will hear loudspeakers from the mosques and the temples. And early morning wake up call will be from a croaking rooster. Every little thing here was so unique and so Kashmir.

We stayed in Chicago houseboat for a night, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Though houseboat concept is well-known, you have to experience Kashmir houseboat hospitality in a good HB like Chicago.
Ours was a 4BR houseboat, one of the bigger ones. We had two rooms, while two other couples were occupying rest.
Rooms were not very large, but good size considering it was a houseboat. It had all required amenities for a comfortable stay, including hot water. Food served was good, and HB staff was nice and helpful.
We did a two hour Shikara ride in the evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. We came to know afterwards that they also offer Shikara ride as part of the package, but in our case that was not included and we paid Rs.1000 for two hour ride, but it was worth it.
The most enjoying part was early morning period the next day. We woke-up at 5.30am for Sun rise, which was simply great. Around 6.15 am, slowly, Dal lake came to life - first came shikaras with a vendor selling flowers, seeds and another with fruits. Then came few handicraft sellers. Good part was that they were not pushy, if you say no, they will go away smiling, I really appreciate that.
What is more important here is selection of HB. We were in area called "Golden Pond/lake" which was cleaner and not much smelly. I have read on TA about few reviews where people have complained about smelly surroundings.
We will definitely recommend Chicago HB .

The houseboat was very clean and well maintained. House keeping staffs were very friendly and helpful. The food was very delicious. The owner of the houseboat was a gentleman, he personally used to check each and everything and we used to chit chat every evening. If you are planning to stay in houseboat, I recommend not to go here and there but choose Chicago. In order to help you out I am sharing the number of the owner you can connect with him directly. +91 94190 61430 here is the number. Thank me later!!!!

Let me start from the time we checked in; it was around 4pm and there was some repair n maintenance work being carried out and we had to wait almost 30 minutes before we entered the room. Luckily we got delayed and didn’t arrive around noon.
The houseboat keeper just vanished; there was no drinking water in the rooms; Internet not working , no toilet paper and when I finally managed to spot him he just kept assuring that the internet will be fixed soon. The service bells don’t function as we tried many times but nobody came to check.
Food was strictly okay. The less I say it’ll be better.
The interiors are very beautiful with wood carvings furniture, chandeliers etc but that’s what it is. There’s no natural light/ ventilation/ windows as the house boats are stacked very close to each other.
The 1 hour shikara ride is a farce; instead of relaxing and enjoying the ride there were vendors and hawkers trying to sell items. Also the ride was not on the main lake but another golden lake.
I had huge expectations with this one night stay in the houseboat but the experience dampened my spirit and was just wasn’t upto the mark. Personal advice to fellow travelers…the houseboat stay can be skipped.

If Kashmir is heaven on earth then Chicago Houseboat was our house in heaven. It was our first experience in the houseboat and we were a bit unsure until we reached the shikara. Our experience from there was spotless, the 2 caretakers Khan Chicha and Mohd bhai were so warm and lovely. They took care of our every need and went way and above to make sure we were comfortable and having a wonderful time. Ajaz bhai the owner was also very warm and arranged for us transportation around the city and other cities.
The houseboat itself is very pretty with a mesmerizing view from the deck. The rooms are well equipped and there was a furnace (bukhari) which gave us heat when the weather was bad. Food cooked at the place was very tasty and homely which we enjoyed after eating out most of the time.
We lived at many places in Kashmir but this will be our home.

We were a family of 3 adults and booked Chicago house boats after reading great reviews. I must this place exceeded our expectations. Mr. Ajaz was very kind and helpful. In fact he went on to manage our entire travel around Kashmir. The rest of the houseboat staff are also very kind and gentle, and do their best to meet all our requests.
The location of the houseboat is the best giving you stunning views of the sunset from the deck. In fact we spent most of our time here on the deck enjoying the beauty of Dal Lake.
The houseboat staff took care of all our dietary needs and served us great dinner and breakfast. The food is delicious and homely, giving you a good break from the very heavy food you get outside.
Would definitely recommend giving this experience a try.

The boathouse is situated in a good location and the stay is comfortable even in low temperature in early Feb 22. The host Ajaz Bhai and Khan chacha make you feel at home. My mother is old and due to her health, she couldn't travel out with us when we were sightseeing in Srinagar. Khan chacha took care of her so well in our absence that we didn't have to worry and could enjoy our outing. The food was tasty and was worth the money. While planning the trip as it was self-planned I was unsure about booking the local transport. When I spoke to Ajaz Bhai about it in Jan before our arrival he help arrange us with the best drivers (Tahir Bhai and Tariq Bhai ) and vehicles. They were very helpful in guiding us right when we traveled to Pahalgam and Gulmarg. We had a mishap with our luggage when we landed in Srinagar, even though we were staying in this houseboat at the end of our trip when we informed Tariq Bhai about it, he and Ajaz Bhai helped us to procure it from Airport without it hindering our itinerary. Whenever anyone travels they do expect hospitality however, what we experienced was beyond it. I would definitely recommend this place if you are considering staying in houseboat in Dal lake any season of the year.

Stayed here sometimes back but I know I had to write a review for my wonderful stay. This is a lovely boat house at a perfect location. Room was very clean and tidy and the service was top notch. The owner Mr Ajaz was the perfect host and a very honest and friendly man. All services are offered and at a good price and your tour is made simple and easy by him. If I was to go there again, will surely stay here again.
