We visited Phalgam first on our trip and had a scheduled stay at Almond villa for the last 4 days our trip. The property is located in one of the best possible locations in Srinagar. Near everything, yet secluded withing it's huge private land. It is tastefully done and has great character to it. Rooms are huge and well kept and so are the common areas. The food served too was good. (breakfast is included and dinner is served on order). The view and proximity to lake, huge back garden along mountains and open area all around makes the property even more special. It even has a great library with Dal lake views. Special mention has to be made for the boys who run the place, who provide super service.
The reason I gave the title "Beyond Hospitality" to the review is because of what it offered us after our scheduled stay there. The day we were to fly out, Srinagar witnessed the tragic flooding. This was the time when the staff and owners extended their warm and full support to us for the stay at the property. Being on a height and secluded from all sides, luckily the property was not flooded and we had to extend our stay for 4-5 days till evacuated. But, during this period, we were treated and served as family members at the villa.
It is due to this kind of treatment, we will be back at the Villa sooner than later.
On paper, it is a bed and breakfast or a homestay. But nothing you are told prepares you for what you actually see. It is located on the Boulevard Road overlooking the Dal Lake. It is in the middle of an orchard. As far as the eye can see, you only see lush green mountains with only a few structures scattered in between. After all, it belongs to the erstwhile royal family of Kashmir, who still own and run it. And the few buildings you see (none very close) are all heritage ones too, including some hotels at the extreme end of luxury.
* Service: You are made to feel special. Actually, just being within these environs is feeling at the top.
* Rooms: As expected, done with the finest of furnishings. Very clean, and giving you a retro feel with modern day comforts.
* Location: Does not get better, away from the hustle and bustle of town. And yet just a few miles from all major tourist attractions and markets. The Dal Lake is just outside its gates, and you can go for a ride there and then.
* Amenities: Very nice sitting areas both indoor and outdoor. Cable TV in common room (if you care for it).
* Liked Best: The heritage feel with all comforts, and the lawns and orchards and the views around.
* Liked Least: There is nothing to not like about the property.
* Food Quality: Excellent, home cooked meals.
* Rates: Rs. 4,800 / 6,000 per night for two including breakfast depending on type of room
You could call it a homestay , if you usually live with Royalty. It’s sort of like the term girl next door if you stay on Sunset Boulevard.
· Almond Villa has its own eco system and it is best recognised and respected . The people are most gracious, hospitable and well informed. If you are with Bunty & Munna and need a place that will indulge your every strident demand - this isn't it.
·Plan and respect other’s time – and the same is done of yours.
· Location : Right by Dal lake though not the first thing you will see. Get directions and note that there is the Almond Villa Jetty opposite. We found that not everybody knew about the place, so plan accordingly.
The place : The Mughal emperor Jahangir, while living in a houseboat on Dal Lake had said "Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin ast." If there is ever a heaven on earth, its here, its here, its here. May be he took a stroll around Almond Villa : ) You will just love the morning walks around the lake. Advise set the alarm early, the morning mist hides a lone shikara crossing. You could also enjoy the equally long stroll within the lush villa.
·Rooms : Are large, bright and well ventilated. There are few rooms – so you need to plan early. The view of the gardens and hills are what screen savers are made of. Yes, the building has been refurbished/renovated – there is concern on wiring . Caution. There is a possible chance the motor may pack up . Yes, you get water brought to your room. If you are the impatient type who will ring for room service as a feudal right, well, you’ve been warned.
·Food : The meals at the villa are excellent. Those of us who see Fresh Strawberry placards at the supermarket back home – will now realise what Fresh Strawberries actually mean. Food is light, healthy and tasty. The best to balance your visit to Ahdoos.
·Books – Okay, it seems unusual to cover books while on holiday but serendipity is at play. You get a window to someone else’s collection and tastes - you come back richer. The book on Margaret Bourke White was a delight to read – amongst the many others. You might run into people who will engage a thought and line of discussion - just what your daily routine fails to give you. If these make sense, add it to the top of the reasons to stay at Almond Villa.
If you want to see more than the familiar hotel lobby and room service - take this forward. The Almond Villa will stay with you much longer. Make the pick !
But but But on arriving at the Hotel we were met by the Charismatic owner of the property Ms Jyotsana , who showed us around the property. We were stuck by the size of their estate and the quality of rooms and the maintenance. I was surprised as am very allergic to dampness and believe me that i cannot stay at most of the hotels in the hills because the rooms stink and have a lot of dampness.but it was so airy and mantained that it was all perfect.
The room interiors were better or at par with any good 04 or 05 star hotel in the city. Spawling gardens , fantastic and perfect view.
They do not serve lunch at the property. We had got our drinks along and they allowed us to use the lounge to enjoy the evening . Dinner was homely and perfect couldnt have asked for more.
Overall a very complete trip.
During the morning walks we plucked strawberries & cherry and enjoyed the views of the dal lake in front and lush green mountains on the back.
Just come out of the property main gate and you find the jetty where you can enjoy the shikara ride.
We also got jams , pickels , honey from the farmers mart which is organized on every sunday at the property.
Will come back for sure.
Anyone who does not seek 5 star luxuries but a beautiful, tranquil and a stay in heritage property must stay at Almond Villa. I strongly recommend it
The rooms are very spacious. There are large living rooms on both floors.
The food was home cooked and delicious. You can also get 'Almond Villa' jams made by the homestay owner ...
The place has a retro, heritage feel with modern day comforts.
The location can't be better. Very close to most popular places. The Dal Lake is just outside its gates, and you can go for a ride there and then.
You can easily stay here for a couple of days. Ideally it's not a place with kids.
For the ambience, location and comfort, it's quite right priced.
Would highly recommend to people who are looking for the old world charm & home away from home!
