We spend some wonderfull days at Butt's Houseboats. It is a fantastic place and the service is warm and very polite. The boat is old, but very charming and pittoresque and the surroundings is unforgetteable.

My friends and i stayed for just under a week at Mr.Butt's, or as we came to know him, Gulam's boathouse. We had the most amazing time! The service was exception and the views out of this world. They were very helpful with offering us tips for the best shops, museums and restaurants, and advising us how not to pay too much. They were also very helpful with transport to and from the airport.
My favourite memory is either going on a small 4-hour houseboat to the island in the middle of the lake, or when we sat and had afternoon tea on the grass in the sun. Perfection!

If you want to holiday on a houseboat, my guess is Mr Butt's collection of 5 are probably your best bet. The boats are moored alongside a lovely garden and are the only ones on this peaceful stretch of lake. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning and see nothing but the birds on the water. Mr Butt himself is a very attentive host. Ramzan our Butler took good care of us. And we all found Lasa a most interesting, knowledgable and lovable boatman. The ride in his shikara to see the lotus & floating gardens was one of the highlights of the trip.

I'm sad to say that there is a However...
I wish the carpets, linen and bathrooms were clean. Though we were supposed to walk barefoot on the carpets inside the boat, they were so grubby that i sneaked around in slippers. The bathroom was dingy and none too clean and i only used it when i absolutely had to. My daughter and son in law said their bed linen looked so dirty that they slept with all their clothes on. The windows too certainly needed dusting.

Kashmiri mutton is delicious and i tucked into it, but the vegetarian food was disappointing. The first afternoon there was strange tasting paneer , which appeared again at night alongside a bowl of peas. The second night the leftover peas and paneer were mixed together in one unappetizing dish.

Mr Butt has a treasure which needs to be supervised with more attention to detail & cleanliness. Sadly, like Dal lake itself, his boats are being choked by neglect. Please don't let that happen Mr Butt- once the tourists flock back to Srinagar, yours could (and should) be the first place they head to because of your truly beautiful and unique location. Besides, houseboats and Srinagar have always been synonymous, so it would be a real pity to allow your enterprise to sink for lack of a little care.

If you want a true Kashmiri experience look no further than Butt's clermont. The incredible ornate houseboats are a trip back into colonial Kashmir
The staff at Butt's Clermont made us feel extremely welcome and safe- tending to our every need and advising us where we should go and what we should do.
My friends and I felt truly part of the family and staying in this unique place was an unforgettable experience.
Looking forward to many future trips.

Gulam Butt is a caricature of an Indian host. He has hosted an impressive list of guests at his houseboats - Ravi Shankar taught George Harrison the sitar here, Michael Palin stayed here during his Himalaya series - but what's more impressive is the simple perfection of the place. That is, the boats, the service, the scenery, the wildlife, and the local characters who've been working with Gulam for decades to provide a great stay. Indeed, where Gulam really works the Indian host routine, the locals - Lassa the boatman and guide, Shefi the driver, Ramzan - quietly and charmingly worked to make sure we got the best of our time in the area.

Srinagar has had troubles in the recent past, but we can hope that the past has truly passed: our stay here was exhilarating for all the right reasons. We went on from here to Leh with Gulam's recommended driver Shefi, which is a two day drive across the most stunning scenery and one I'd really recommend to anyone getting to Srinagar.

There's nothing quite like it. You don't need to be brave to go to Srinagar, but you might well be a fool not to stay here when you come! When we were filling in our tourist registration card at Srinagar airport, we'd only got as far as 'Bu..' when the attendant beamed and exclaimed 'Butt's Clermont Houseboats! The best!'

Hopefully I'll remember to stick my own pics of our stay here soon...

Thank you to my friends at the American Embassy School in New Delhi. I asked the teachers there for a recommendation of a place to go.

On my 1st trip to India I did not want to travel a lot or feel insecure, so they sent me and my husband to Butt's Clermont Houseboats. I was looking for a quiet and easy setting, but with plenty of interesting things to see, do, draw and paint.

We found a place where the welcome was effusive and as warm as the freshly cooked donuts and Kashmiri tea we received upon arrival. Ramzan kaka took excellent care of us throughout our visit.
We moved into a beautiful, one bedroom houseboat and settled in. after exploring, I needed the bed to be made softer and the entire mattress was replaced.
We were taken on a most magical shikara ride into the canal garden paradise and saw so many birds we'd never seen before.

The setting, people and overall experience were so wonderful. I would love to go back someday. If you are ever lucky enough to go to Kashmir, stay here!

We just had 2 nights stay in Srinagar and had found these Shikara's on the net. From the arrival at the airport, to the welcome at the houseboat itself, the ever smiling attendant, the knowledgable shikara person, everyone treated us as a part of a family.
The owner Mr Butt is extremely caring and concerned about your comfort, Ramzan Kaka treats you like his nieces/nephews and ensures all is warm and the food is to your liking, Shakeel bhai the driver acts as a guide cum shopping assistant.
And the prices are 1/4 of any 5 star hotel.
I recommend this stay without apprehensions!

Let me make one thing clear from the start - I am not fascinated by houseboats. I know of people that have wanted to stay on a houseboat forever, and make it their mission to stay in one upon visiting Dal. I am nothing like that. It's just a big boat on water, and a stationary one at that - what's so special about that, I thought. Had I stayed in any other place during my visit to Srinagar, I may have continued to have this blase attitude, but as luck would have it, I ended up at Butt's Clermont and a massive shift in my perspective occurred. That is not an exaggeration by any measures.

Butt's Clermont is in the middle of an age-old Mughal garden, which in itself is sufficient to stop many a sensitive hearts in their tracks. You look at the riot of flowers and ancient trees and wonder how could this place get any better. You cross the garden to get to the lakeside, to your houseboat hypnotized by how incredibly the bustle of Dal is nowhere to be found here. If the main Dal houseboat area is a flea market, then Clermont is almost a spiritual retreat. And then you enter the boat.

A lot has been said by many people of esteem about the Victorian decor of the boats, so I wont harp on about that. What I do want to appreciate is the one thing about Clermont that you can not find anywhere else - the Clermont staff. The owner, Mr. Ghulam N. Butt is less host, more family, and a meeting with him is sure to cheer up even the most forlorn spirits, as was the case with me. Ramzan is so unobtrusive that you hardly sense him around, except for when you need him. That's when he appears magically, as if out of nowhere, to facilitate everything - no matter how fussy your diet or other requirements.

There is also Manzoor, who deserves an entire story, if I could write one, but I hope it suffices to say that the man made me cry the happiest tears.

This may seem overtly dramatic to some, but I could hardly care. Go to Clermont for the beautiful surroundings, the lush interiors, the mouth-watering food, or the immense history, but I must emphasize one thing - no matter how swollen your expectations from the place, they will always be exceeded at Butt's Clermont.

We stayed here for 2 nights, in the 2 bed room house boat.

Everything from speaking to Mr Butt for booking the place, our arrival at the houseboat until we left the place leaves behind extremely fond memories.

We were welcomed like cherished family members our special meal requirements were catered to (i am a non vegetarian while my husband is a vegetarian)

We thoroughly enjoyed the shikara ride with Lhasa Chacha who knows a lot about the dal lake.....

The morning and evening kashmiri chai (kahwa) were memorable events in the garden adjoining the houseboat. The traditional Kashimiri food was delightful.

The highlights include the location, the comfort, the beautiful houseboat with some memorable furniture, the guest book maintained painstakingly by Mr Butt that captures the experiences of travellers across generations, the time Mr Butt spent with us telling us about the glorious past, the troubled recent past and now the beautiful present felt like we were listening to a member of our family narrate his experiences.

A place where we have loads of pleasant memories and would love to return to:)
