We LOVED Johnson’s Hotel (did not love Johnson Lodge next door). Clean, cute, warm rooms with excellent service. The restaurant is AMAZING. We tried a few other places but kept coming back to Johnson’s Hotel restaurant because the food was seriously delicious AND the service was attentive, prompt, and friendly. If I come back to Manali, this is the only place I will stay.

We stayed in Johnsons Hotel on our return journey from Leh for 2 days (Check in - 13th June'23, Checkout 15th Jun'23). The hotel is on the circuit house road (very close to Mall road and a quick uphill walk to Old Manali). We stayed in Room No. 12 (112 was written on the key) on the third floor. The hotel has a great overall ambience. They have a very lively inhouse Bar with live music. The breakfast spread is superb and the overall food quality is also excellent. Being centrally located everything is accessible on foot. The rooms are spacious and clean. What more can a person ask for. Everything is just superb.

Room Tip: The hotel does not serve Indian food for lunch / dinner but rest if their food menu is great

The hotel is lovely with a beautiful garden, lovely rooms and great food.
We kept extending our holiday, and the staff was very helpful and friendly.
The location is excellent--close to the heart of Manali but a little away from the crowds.
They have live music every night from 7 to 10 and a DJ from 10 onwards, which is a bit annoying if you want to have conversations over dinner. So we tended to avoid eating at the cafe in the evening.

I have visited Manali close to 8-9 times on treks, or in transit to Leh/Lahaul. Of these, I have stayed at Johnson almost 5-6 times.

I saw it as a good boutique hotel, quiet and green, and yet very much in the centre of town, with classy alpine style interiors, and great food. Many of the other places in Manali are positioned either towards the loud North Indian tourist, or to the unwashed hippie type foreigners.

This hotel was always different - and had a certain appeal for the discerning, classy traveler.

But now, over the years, the hotel seems to have become a popular party place / nightclub. They seem to attract good bands, and the who's who of Manali comes in the evening and stays till the early hours.

The hotel owners seem to be cashing in on this, and ignoring the core positioning above, which attracted me in the first place.

We found this to our dismay in our latest stay when we checked in on a Saturday night to depart on Sunday morn. Here are some examples:

1. We were to leave at about 830am - not a very early hour - but the hotel staff informed us that they wont be able to serve any breakfast before 10. Reason - the party would only end towards early morning.

2. The jazz band was nice, but do guests really want the place buzzing till 2 in the morning?

3. The entire resources of the hotel seemed to be occupied in serving the party. Firstly, we as guests were forced to join the party because there was no other place in the hotel to eat. Secondly, the service was EXTREMELY SLOW. That's OK for people who had come there to enjoy the evening and have a few drinks. But what about the hotel's own guests who may want to have a quick bite and sleep early?

4. After the hotel party, there were some guests who continued to drink and have a loud private party in the lawn till approx 4am. No one from the hotel was around to ask them to stop.

5. There was no porter service, either on arrival or departure. There was hardly anyone to help us check out. And mind you, we werent checking out at like 4am. It was 8am. The entire hotel staff seemed to be recovering from their party.

6. The maintenance and upkeep of the rooms and plumbing was going downhill from what I recalled.

So in short, this has become a hotel where their own guests are second class citizens and the focus of the establishment is on the walk-in guests into the restaurant/nightclub, because they must be making better money there.

Best stay option in Manali and easily my favourite, specially their family room with kitchette and connecting door. Excellent decor. 2 mins walk to the shops and market. Good food, great service, best bar in town.

Having stayed at many places/ hotel, two things which can make or break a stay is staff culture and honesty while booking. The Staff behavior was very cold towards us from day-1. It was as if they were doing us favour by allowing us to stay in their premium property. While booking , the double deluxe room had a outdoor balcony, actually the room didn't have outdoor seating as depicted in photos - Dishonesty. WiFi and other amenities were requested for and not shared up front. The adjacent "Johnson Lodge" had better menu and staff was more welcoming and lively! My choice next time.

Plus: Location was close to Old Manali & Nature's Park, Parking facility, clean premises and hotel Infrastructure

Very nice property

I always stayed in cottage no 3 which has a private lawn it's the same as always nice clean oakwook cottage
Gives the real feel of a mountain cottage stay
Has a well stocked kitchen alongwith

The staff is very courteous n helpful
But high time they changed the bedding, the mattress are not that comfortable any more, the quilts are old fashioned n heavy need a change to lighter more comfortable

The restaurant serves amazing food I loved my daily breakfast there

It's a very child friendly hotel the kids have a whole lot of space to play games

Overall a wonderful experience, a holiday worth remembering

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for 3 nights in total. It has a great bed which made the stay worth it (some mattresses in India are too thin but these were great).
We were a bit disappointed because when we booked the room, it said we would have an upstairs room with a balcony, when we checked in however we were given a room downstairs. It had a terrace outside but was shared between the rooms downstairs. When we asked about the room we had booked, we were told all the upstairs rooms were full and we weren't offered a discount.
Wi-Fi was also non existent in the room. It was a bit over priced for what you get.
On a positive note, we ordered room service a few times and the staff were really nice and it does have a beautiful garden to relax in.

Whilst the property is beautiful and the breakfast is tasty, this place falters on its interpersonal skills on a management and staff level. Simple services such as room cleaning are neglected and staff have to be reminded regarding this. Staff in the restaurant aren't overly friendly but this also depends on who serves you on the day/night. Within management levels there was one pleasant guy we spoke to but he doesn't seem to be the head of management which is unfortunate as he possessed good interpersonal skills.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Johnson Hotel in August 2017, on our way to Spiti Valley. It is an elegant hotel, with a perfect location, away from the crowd and the noise, but still within walking distance from the Mall and the bus station.
The room was big and clean, with a balcony facing the mountains.

The restaurant serves excellent food.

It might be a bit pricier than the average accomodation in Manali, but it really deserves every extra rupies.
