'French Haveli'- Experience Culture and tradition in heart of Ahmedabad old city. The 'French Haveli' is a traditional Gujarati heritage home. What makes it more exotic is the eclectic design influenced by colonial times in Ahmedabad. Staying in this beautiful restored 'Haveli' offers a unique experience in the traditional community living called 'Pol'. The history of this house goes back over 100 years, however the name is derived to commemorate the Indo-French project initiated in year 2000 to revitalize the Old City of Ahmedabad. French architects restored this Haveli and lived here. The 'French Haveli' is a Bed and Breakfast. We serve you a freshly cooked breakfast by our house help. The vegetables and ingredients are purchased from the nearby markets in the historic city centre "ManekChowk". You could go to these markets on your own by renting a bicycle parked outside French Haveli. We can help you to get local food for our approved restaurants and spread it as a exotic lunch/dinner in the lovely dining area at the 1st floor. We have a small efficient kitchen, which can be accessed with prior permission. Living in this house is to experience the Guajarati culture with comfort and luxury. The moment one enters this artistically decorated traditional Haveli, you realize how the craftsmen used space and energy effectively. The central court is open to sky, which gets in optimum air and light. This is generally the soul of all Havelis. The JHULA (traditional swing) is a place to sit and feel this building. You will get to peep down into the tanka (rain water harvesting tank, which we use as water reservoir to pump the 5 modern bathrooms). This traditional courtyard has a subtle combination of spaces flowing into the contemporary lounge, rustic kitchen and grand bathroom at the ground floor. Staying in this house you will experience privacy and yet be part of the central community space this French Haveli overlooks into. The community space has a Chabutra (bird feeder), a Jain temple and also a dilapidated Vaishnav temple (waiting to be restored). You will have the neighbourhood kids saying hello from the semi open doors (jali doors). Each room at the French Haveli has a unique feature and can ultimately be the best choice for your group depending on their needs. All rooms are air conditioned. The single rooms at the first floor of the French Haveli are the tiny jewels. The first jewel is called 'Chabutro'- means the bird feeder. Sleeping in this room is being atop a tree house or climbing the bird feeder. 'Chabutro,' located at the first floor, has a very strategic location, projecting out from the building in a way that gives it 3 sides window openings. This room has a private study at the ground floor with two doors. One door is a direct entry from the main street, which gives an advantage to come in the house directly. The other opens into the lounge and the court. This room uses the ground floor 'Blue Bathroom.' The other jewel is called 'Malo' - The Nest. This room again is unique as its one side window opens in the central court, meant to make connection to the entire house. The other wall has windows opening in the north side lane connecting the two community spaces. This room has again two doors giving access one to the lounge at 1st floor and other to the dedicated study area at 1st floor. These doors and windows help you control your experience of the space as per your need, mood or time of the day. This room has a dedicated toilet at 1st floor. Both single rooms have a comfort of large bed. Have the dedicated toilet at the same floor. The double room at the 1st floor "ORDO" is an opportunity to experience the traditional retiring rooms in the historic times of Ahmedabad. In the olden times when electricity was not available 'ORDO' was a retiring area from the families. The ORDO was typically having thick wall and small windows to beat the tropical heat. This 'ORDO' has one small window on the south wall, now air-conditioned, also has attached bath. The feature of having internal windows opening in the dining area to get fresh air from the central court can be exercised. All rooms at the 1st floor have an access to the small lounge overlooking the central court of the house on one side and the community space on the other. The suite room 'Mahajan Suite'. Mahajan - literally means 'Great Man'. This house has a history of being owned by the business community know as "Mahajan". History of Ahmedabad records that all the Mahajan community was philanthropic in nature. They along with business helped develop the community and the city. The 'Mahajan Suite' gives you luxury of a private terrace with gazebo, a private sitting and a large king size bed. The large bathroom has dress area fitted with Indian marble and traditional furniture. You have option to add an extra bed in this suite room. The 'Agaashi" - The terrace. This room with two queen beds is truly a traveller's delight, compact and airy. Its private balcony with Bougainvillea plants lets you look around the community and also examine closely the restored lime stucco on the facade. The large window when opened in central court dramatically expands the rooms and makes it bright and airy. The contemporary bathroom with the traditional 'Ghokla' makes the stay memorable for cultural travellers.

Had an excellent time at the French Haveli. It is beautiful, clean, and comfortable - the rooms, living room, the dining area (especially the bookcase with books about the city and its heritage status). The old-world charm of the place is a big plus. Cars cannot reach the location but that is clearly informed during the booking process. Autorickshaws can be used to reach the doorstep easily. Bansi was extremely helpful and courteous. He was always available to answer any query about the place and help with travel arrangements (within the city and outside). I would recommend this place to any traveler who appreciates history and heritage and would also like to be super comfortable. The food was excellent, though I would still recommend a few local Gujarati foods in the breakfast/meals menu, considering the rich and unique cuisine of the state.

The decoration is one of the most beautiful and cozy I’ve ever seen. Staff is very helpful and kind. Breakfast is delicious. Location is excellent, away from traffic noise. Old beautiful architecture keeping us away from hot weather outside. Lots of shades and places to rest.

II stayed at French Haveli for 9 days. I had the most agonizing experience there. When I arrived in the night, the staff were fast asleep (I had informed about the flight). One of the kind neighbors helped us locate the door bell. The most shocking experience I had was the filth that was not flushed in the toilet bowl. Both in the night and the next morning, the filth was still there. It was cleaned only when I told the caretaker about it. I found some of windows couldn't be locked. One of the window chain was too short to reach the lock, so I used a metal handle I carried with me to fasten the window. One day, the staff asked me not to lock the doors for cleaning Now I remember, there were several requests. In spite of assurance of safety, my watch went missing. Fortunately, it was quite inexpensive one, Casio digital watch with solar charge. When I enquired about the watch, I was given all kinds of disclaimers. The owner through a What's App call gave disclaimers too and said how loyal the staff were. I agree, it was entirely my fault that I kept the door unlocked. There were no efforts made to look for my watch (it was kept in front of mirror in my room, where else could it be lost). After this, the attitude of the staff changed to worse. And, I got a sick and hardly had strength to stand. When I asked for toilet paper (which were not replenished and neither the garbage picked after my watch went missing) the man Bansi holding a grudge on me yelled and told me that he cannot enter the bathroom without my permission. This was ridiculous excuse as the bathroom is outside the room, with no locks, and open all the time. Apparently, he mistook my politeness as my weakness. That was the point, when I raised my voice and asked the man to behave in front of a guest. At this point, if I were to rate the behavior of the staff, it would go way in minus. This man Bansi threatened me that he will call the owner. The owner apologized and did nothing about the situation. (The owner was nowhere to be seen. He has left everything in the hands of the staff who are not trained in hospitality. Because of his absence, the staff thought they own the place. The staff working there might have been picked up from any random place because of cheap labor.) The toiletries weren’t provided, in my 9 day stay, I got them just once . Also, it was only when I read in the comments, I came to know water bottles were provided. I always requested for water in a jug to be replenished. It was a torture to stay there. I asked the owner to cancel my remaining two-day stay. He started giving all kinds of excuses but never took the step. The guests are advised to keep their things safely. Please do not leave the room without getting it locked, even when going to the toilet. In fact, carry your own locks. Made a mess of such a beautiful place.

The renovated haveli is located in one of the "pol"s or traditional neighborhoods in old Ahmedabad. Narrow winding streets on the way to the French Haveli give visitors an intimate association with life of citizens that is traditional in many ways. The haveli is pleasantly different from a standard hotel. The rooms are modest in size. Steep stairways are the means to move between different parts of the haveli and, in some cases, between different floors of a single accommodation. The bathrooms are private but not all are within the room. The breakfasts were lovely and large consisting of traditional Gujarati cuisine.

It’s not a made-up Haveli, it actually is! It’s well kept and the warmth it offers is strong enough to pull us back for a second visit very soon. The entire street from the main road to this Haveli is same as walking down the history lanes.

We booked this property based on the reviews given about this property. The reality is completely different right the word go. Approach to the Hotel is horrifying and if you notice they have hidden the facts that are important for a relaxed stay. The stairway to upper floors are never shown in pictures as they are dangerously steep and narrow. Just one wrong step you will be in a nearby hospital. You just cannot close one door or window fully (i bet if anyone can do it). Noise from neighbourhood can destroy your sleep and if that doesn't happen, the upper floor a/c drain will for sure. We booked for two nights, paid for the same (twice) and vacated the property just after the first night taking the losses. I honestly suggest that TripAdvisor or any such online booking site to visit and qualify the property before some accident occurs and we lose faith in your rating. I wish I could mention one good thing about the property!

We loved being at French Haveli, it was a sublime and quite a traditional feel one can cherish. The services were great. Location is beautifully lead into the intricacies of dhal ni pol, which introduces the travelers to new vibe of architecture. Lots of architectural interesting sites are nearby which adds vitality to this location. To add up, the whole experience is intriguing - MUST VISIT!
