The place is just a walking distance from the hospital since that's where I was going to for work. The room is quiet spacious and clean. There's a cooking place and some dishes to use. If you coming from the airport, you will need to hire a taxi or van from there as it quiet a distance from there (almost 15 to 20 minutes ride). I am always worried when I am awake when they have the power off between the early hours in the morning. They didn't tell me about it when I checked in. I stayed here for one week so I have that bad experience if I am awake when the light turns off. The place is not fully secured since anyone can even try to climb up to the balcony from the road (or not!!). That was the only negative thing about it... anyways, it is still on an island paradise.
I am satisfied with the service offered. Except they don't provide morning breakfast and all. The place is about 200m walking distance from the jetty. Since the electricity is powered by generator, normally during the day, the air con is off. The generator is only turned on from the evening till 5.45am. Other than that, the rooms are quite big enough. Its got a bed, small TV, a small refrigerator and electric kettle. The view of the sea is amazing from the balcony. Its got a liquour shop, post office, restaurant below. Cost for one night is $85.
My friend and I stayed there for a week. There was no electricity from 1am to 6am and from 1pm to 4pm it was very hot and the fan wasnt working because they turned the power off. We couldnt sleep well because there is a rowdy bar downstairs. The whole thing needs renovation and proper management. Next time Iam in Taveuni I am going to stay at Chottu's its much nicer. #angryfijian#
We first stayed at the First Light Inn in Dec 2000. It was beautiful, everything brand new and great kitchen facility although our children's food got stolen from the communal fridge downstairs. The scene couldn't be better, right on the beach front looking across to Vanua Levu. However, we've stayed there four times since the latest being May, 2010. The place is now very run down and so badly needs some basic maintenance like painting, new bedding and curtains. The shower and toilet was disgusting and the price has just been increased. There are now little fridges in the rooms, but the cooking facility downstairs is gone. For such an ideal setting, the place just needs proper maintenance. We don't mind paying more if the facilities are kept clean and presentable.
Walking form the ship to the hotel took only a few minutes. Arriving there booked a room for the week paying 65 fiji$ per night for a room with air conditioning. (important in nov) A cheaper room is available for less but it wont have a view from the porch as nice or AC either. The staff here was very friendly and helpful. A post office and small grocery store as well as a small resturant are all located downstairs. As well as a small bar next door. Power is provided by a generator as are all other places on the island, since there is no Power Station on taveuni. There are also no cars for hire there and the nearby gas station is a fenced in lot with hand pumped barrels that have been offloaded from the ship. There is a nearby fijian village that has a river running next to it. The rocks are super slippery forming natural waterslides under the waterfall. It is usually full of locals swimming washing sliding etc. It is a 10 minute walk from 1st light and is a must see for anyone staying there. …
