Absolutely criminal and cannot believe these people are in business! Explicitly told them I was only going to be there for 3 days on arrival - instead of the 5 originally booked - and refused to acknowledge the change even though there was 72 hours notice. Then tried to use the credit for friends which they had agreed to and decided against it upon check out. I am seldom angry at a place but leaving there - and now leaving the island - I have a sour taste in my mouth. They went out of their way to be as difficult as possible and nickel and dime for absolutely ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. If I heed any advice, avoid this place.
Great place to stay. We stayed in the family seaview rooms. Room #12. You will not find a better view on the island. Nothing fancy, but clean, safe, comfortable, and staff are friendly. Great value. Free coffee, tea and purified water. Great location. Close to restaurants.
We stayed for 4 nights here and enjoyed it so much we extended our stay. On check in the staff were extremely helpful with suggestions of places to go and things to do. I would recommend getting a room with the sea views. They're amazing. A favourite part of my stay was sitting on the balcony watching the marine iguanas, crabs and seals on the rocks directly in front of the hotel!
Estrella de Mar is VERY well located -ocean front adjacent to the police station, down an alley. Interior rooms are $25/ nite, ocean front rooms are $30/ nite. The staff is VERY helpfull w/ restaurant recommendations, taxis, local events, etc. the rooms are comfortable, spacious, have big windows, AC,. phones & TV. Its oceanfron location make it a FIND ,at these prices.
The best hotel stay in Sta. Cruz!! Very good, clean, spacious. They offer free coffee and tea, drinking water. Best price-accommodation in town. Best ocean view. Very friendly staff. Absolutely recommend it!!
After having decided against a cruise, we at least wanted accommodation with nice water views. Hostal Estrella de Mar did not disappoint, and we returned to it twice after visits to Isabela and Floreana. Hostal Estrella de Mar is an older place tucked into the end of a lane, but therefore also much cheaper than anything else with comparable views. Staff and owners were very friendly and helped with information (although I am not sure if that would have been as efficient had I not spoken Spanish), and lots of wild life just in front of the balcony. There are coffee making facilities, but better bring your own cup and spoon. The wifi worked well in the common area and the inside rooms, but not in our seaside corner room with wonderful views. I'd still go for the room over the wifi!
Having stayed at a less expensive hotel the week prior, I was eager to upgrade to a room with a view. I stayed 2 nights and requested an oceanview room. I had a corner room with two sets of windows and the ocean was out my door. The shared balcony is outside the front door. I heard the waves as I slept. The room was large, very clean, simple furnishings. Comfortable beds. The shower had great water pressure and lots of hot water. Very pleasant front desk staff. Great, central location.
The staff is friendly and pre-arrival emails were cordial. Our room was fabulous, opened to the shared balcony overlooking the rocky shore of Academy Bay. Every morning of our eight days here I woke up looking for "our" adopted iguana and his numerous offspring sunning on the rocks bellow us along with the bright red crabs and the occasional sea lion. I requested the maid not to change the sheets every day so there is no shortage of linens or towels. Shampoo and soap were replenished generously and hot and cold filtered water was supplied in the common room. The coffee machine was out of commission most of the time we were there but I had a supply of instant coffee so managed with the hot filtered water. The refrigerator in our room was welcome for keeping drinks cold. The location across from the police office was excellent, within walking distance to the harbor for ferries, travel agencies, supermarket, the town plaza and numerous restaurants and shops. The small fish market with its attendant sea lion and pelicans and herons waiting for a tidbit from the fishmongers are just down the street and near that, the entrance to the Darwin Station. Thanks to Angel, Luisa and Thorvaldo (head of family, owner of a successful finca and dairy business, who was recruited to knock on our door for a 6:30 a.m. wake up call) for a memorable stay.…
Stayed here for our first 2 nights on the Island. Booked an ocean view room ahead of time based off the reviews and value of this place. Not the nicest hostal/hotel in town but for the price you cannot get much better. Our room was pretty standard but the shared balcony right on the ocean made up for it. We slept with the window open and listened to the waves crashing on the rocks all night and we enjoyed our stay. Lots of animals outside looking out from the balcony. Very friendly front desk guy named Angel (son of the owner) with a nice cat that we hung out with. Wifi was only accessible in a common use room area and it wasn't very fast. Great location in middle of town. Beds were comfortable.
Right on the ocean, close to the pier and restaurants. Around $50 a night and nice people. I think 3 1/2 stars. It did have AC, but nothing at the hotel, no water, snacks or nothing to do. Room was big, clean. Saw iguanas, crabs and birds for room.Nice breeze on balcony but not in room.
