I stayed here for 4 nights. The room is nothing special, but ok and most importantly clean. The guy who makes breakfast is very nice. The breakfast is basic. A portion of scrambled eggs, a bread, jam and butter, coffee/tea and juice. It is write that hot water is available from 07:00 PM to 06:00 AM. I had one time the luck to have a hot shower and that was at 04:00 PM (???). The other times at 08:00 PM and 05:00 AM I only had cold showers.
We stayed here 2 different times - room 9 for 2 nights and then when we returned room 3 for 1 night. The hotel was easy to find via maps.me when we were dropped off at the bus stop. Location is close to the pier and walkable to the Darwin Research Centre and Tortuga Bay. The 2 rooms we had consisted of a double bed and 2 singles. Room 3's bathroom was bigger. Room 9's bed was more comfortable. There is a water cooler in the lobby. They lock the exterior door at 7:00pm and you are given a key for after hours. Breakfast is provided on the roof top if you ordered it when you booked your room. The signs on the walls state that hot water is only available from 19:00 to 6:00.
My partner and I stayed here for four nights. It's in an excellent location, just down the road from the main street with the port. The staff spoke good English and were very helpful. There is free drinking water in the reception area which is a bonus. The room was clean (except for the floor being quite dusty), spacious and the beds very comfortable. If you do stay here please be aware the showers only operate between 7pm to 6am but there is running water from the sink tap all day long. Despite this we would definitely recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again!
Pros: The location is very convenient. Two blocks from the pier and one block from the kioskos at night. There is free filtered water and wifi, although the wifi is unreliable and slow. Rooms are cleaned daily and there is air conditioning in the room (but sometimes it stops working if the temperature is set too low for a long period of time). Cons: I stayed in a room on the ground floor, room 5. It's a bit dark with no outside window. The bathroom is a bit grimy looking and tiny. It can get noisy from people walking pass, from the reception area, and from the plumbing. English is limited, but the one staff that does understand English is rude and arrogant. I told her my AC was not working and she rolled her eyes. The second time it happened she explained to the other staff in Spanish why it happens but not to me. The other staff was very friendly though.…
I spend 2 nights in this hostel Pro: you can include the breakfast for a low price, cheap overall Very well placed, close to the almuerzos and merendias as well as to the sea. The roof top is cool (not oriented to the west thought, so no beautiful sunset from this place) Con : Very low wifi, but hey, you are not there for that :)
Hostal Gardner was a comfortable place to stay for 7 nights. For the first 2 nights we stayed in Room 8, which had the back side of a stairway cutting through the middle of the room, and could have been a head knocker. After our cruise, we stayed 5 nights in Room 9, which was larger and more open. We loved the daily included breakfasts on the terrace. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. We didn't need the aircon. The blanket on the bed was a bit thin. It was quiet at night for sleeping. We loved relaxing on the covered terrace in the evenings, after we were tired from walking around the town. The wifi worked best in the morning, but not well at night. It was great to be able to store our bags at the hostel after check out.
Stayed in the small doem room for a few nights, the place was very clean, great breakfast included, friendly and helpful staff, nice rooftop patio. The wifi isn't reliable, and overall the place is dated, but great location and great option for budget travellers doing lots of adventuring around Puerto Ayora!
I was GRANDPAcking through the Galapagos and stayed 2 nights in Puerto Ayora. I booked myself into a Double Room (single occupancy) at the Hostal Gardner which was located in a central part of town. I paid a discounted rate of $26.70 / night. The room was large and came with a decent wardrobe. Many of the light bulbs didn''t work. It had cable TV with all Spanish speaking channels with no other language options (so, useless to me). The ensuite was ‘tight’. You had to sit on the toilet slightly side-ways. The ‘hot water’ shower was unreliable. On my 1st night I couldn’t get a constant setting and fought between cold and boiling water. On my 2nd night, there was no hot water at all. Even though I requested good in-room wifi when I booked (I need it for my work), my in-room wifi was useless and unusable. The wifi in the Common Areas was no better. The blanket on my bed was so thin that I couldn’t sleep on my first night – I was too cold. The aircon did not heat. For my 2nd night I asked for another blanket. The included Breakfast of eggs, bread, coffee and juice was served in the rooftop terrace. Extra cups of coffee were 50c each. All-in-all, this hostal was ‘average’ value for money.…
I stayed here for 6 nights. I was gone for most of the day every day which made this place bare able. I was in room number 8 it always had a smell to it of mold. The lady that cleaned the room always opened the window, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving open since it was covered by a slightly off center screen that lead straight to the hallway. Easy for someone to climb in. The bed had sheets on it and a blanket I’m not sure has ever been washed. It was cheap, $25 a night for my own room and bathroom. The room mostly seemed clean, floor was sticky. The front desk was helpful arranging things. Don’t even try the internet it never worked for me. Breakfast was okay. They never had cushions on the chairs on the rooftop deck even though they showed them in the pictures. The shower never seemed to have hot water either. The second floor was fairly quiet and the room was quiet except when people were walking up and down the stairs.…
This Hostel was very welcoming. Reception is nice and especially the kitchen staff was very freindly. The breakfast was awesome, didn't expect this from a hostel in South America. Very recommendable!!
