It was a hotel and now is a Gallery and cowering lab. It was amazing with all collections, art, creativity and hospitality here. I look into inside of the gallery, love the uniqueness of the collection. Some really simple but artistically displayed.

Hotel 1961 is a unique and comfortable place to stay in Siem Reap. A place full of artistic pieces: books, photographs, paintings, posters, and old stuff that are created and improvised into interesting works of art. The people are genuinely welcoming and accommodating and gave us the best tour guide! For travelers who are into books and arts, and want...

This is not your typical hotel where everything is provided and your comfort is everything to them. No this is not. The whole place is an artwork. And every corner is a piece. I was fortunate to be there when a gay Cambodian artist did an art exhibit. It was beautiful. The pictures of the hotel shown in the net...

First, Hotel 1961 promises every visitor a unique experience of the artistic kind - and it delivers. Each room has an unpolished look and feel to it but this may very well be its main selling point, especially for austere travelers. Hotel 1961 also doubles as art gallery of sorts where visitors are treated to an exclusive viewing of art...

First of all, this is my disclaimer: I am a Filipino based most of the year in Manila, the Philippines. Because of the nature of my life, and work, I travel quite often, but am always on a tight budget. I travel light and rarely carry a proper camera, nor do I photodocument most of my trips. Places I visit...

Had a great time at Hotel 1961. Each room is so unique and well-curated. Have fun going around the hotel and looking at the different art pieces - you can buy some of them! We were lucky to have been there during the launch of an art exhibit. The best thing about this hotel would have to be the staff....

This place is a hoax and biggest disappointment of my travels. You browse their website: looks cool, and café, art gallery, dinning, shopping..wow; right? Nothing is farther from the truth. See, all the pictures I have attached. Feel free to ask question. Location: This place is in isolate and remote corner of the town in a bad neighborhood by sewer...

I was intrigued by the previous reviews and images of the Hotel 1961. We are interest in progressive art and the combination of hospitality and art exhibits seemed like a natural fit...something different and an enhanced guest experience. In fairness to previous reviewers, guests and the owners of the Hotel 1961, this was not the right property for us and...

The staff was the best part of our experience. They were warm and very accommodating. When we told them we didn't eat meat, they made sure we got plenty of fresh fruit for breakfast, and happily gave me all the delicious Cambodian coffee I could drink! The rooms and hotel did not look like the pictures we saw, and we...

The staff were welcoming & accommodating! I have nothing but praises for them. Loven was helful with his email replies. John, Dara, 'Barang' & Pol were amazing! Thank you for introducing us to the delicious Mee Char. We had a little party the night before we left for Phnom Penh. I was there with another girlfriend of mine. & we...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1961 is primarily an address for art. This is an ART HOTEL. If you are a backpacker or a budget traveler booking our hotel just because our rates suit your budget then we are not the hotel for you! WE ARE THE HOTEL FOR ARTISTS, ART ENTHUSIASTS and TRAVELERS SEEKING CREATIVE NOURISHMENT.Housed in a 1960’s style villa which was formerly a private home turned into a local karaoke bar and then now being resurrected into a creative complex comprising of a series of galleries, artists’ and designers’ studios, dining & shopping destinations including an eight-room “creative hotel”, 1961 came to us as an inspiration to the “nowness” of how we all imagined the future to be in the sixties. The decade of revolutions in art, fashion, architecture, politics, and music, the 60’s was also Cambodia’s golden age.In the purest sense of the word, we are not a hotel, but a creative space where one can stay and immerse into a world of artists, poets, musicians and writers. Not only do we allow guests to indulge in the artists’ worlds, we also encourage them to take part in the process of the creation of the room as a living art space.Eight different rooms present itself as mini galleries that host individual spaces of artistry from curated beddings, hand printed pillow cases, book-filled shelves, and walls riddled with literary musings. A movie and music specialist changes the selections everyday. ... more   less

“If possible and readily available choose a room with art you feel you can engage as each room is curated differently, and with different themes. I had a chance of staying in two different rooms, the Noradom Room (The King's Room) and the Yellow Submarine (Beatles inspired design). They were both totally different and so cannot be compared. As a matter of personal taste, I prefer the Noradom in design better. All other amenities remained standard, i.e. cold and hot shower, airconditioning, orthopedic-prescirbed type bed mattresses, high-speed internet (just as in most of Siem Reap as tourist destination). Really, what defined each room would be the art/design. ENJOY!”

“Real life is on Shivatha and Pub street where you can get good clean room for $10 (e.g. Naga guesthouse, Banana Guesthouse, etc.). Why stay out of town in shabby corner in garage for $30-40?”
  • Inside of bathroom door: scattered paint, stains, and mold - plenty!
  • Note age, condition, and finish of A/c -it's noisy!
  • Note age, condition, and finish of switch

“Tip: we ate dinner and breakefast at the hotel next door, the River Garden Inn, fantastic food at very reasonable prices...highly reccommended. They did not have rooms available or else we would have moved there.”

“If getting natural light is important to you, ask about which rooms have windows. (We didn't inquire, so we don't know if they have any or not.)”
