Detailed Reviews
Our 2 night stay here was much too short. Unfortunately you never know how fabulous a place is until you experience it. This hotel did not disappoint. Elena is sarcastic, fun, charming and engaging. She quickly jumped to friend status with us!! The room was lovely. If you have a preference on decor, I suggest taking a look online at their different room choices. We found the pictures to be spot on. The breakfast each morning was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the garden setting. Highly recommend!!

The hotel was stylish and beautifully decorated, well located to all the major old town historic sites and an easy walk to the sunset viewing each day which is simply stunning. It was lovely to come back to a relaxing, cool room throughout the day before heading out again. The cool green garden outdoor area for the restaurant in site was a refreshing respite from summer. The hotel commitment to the environment was great to see with refillable water, and luxury bathroom products. There was absolutely no problems parking, the staff were clear and helpful in directions!

We went to Zadar on our honeymoon in october 2022. We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel, very nice situated in the old town of Zadar. The staff really made us feel welcome! The breakfast was fantastic ond the room comfortable. We highly recommend this hotel if you want to stay in a intimate environment with a serviceminded staff.

This is my second draft of the review. My first was snarky. I don't write reviews often, but I want to let the owners know what's going wrong in their hotel. There are some real design problems with The Almayer: the website photography is beautiful and misleading. The Deluxe Mezzanine Double seems spacious and suite-like on the website. It is pretty, but entirely not fit for purpose. Lights and sockets in the wrong place, sharp staircase edges jutting out at head height, no mirror for makeup or shaving, bathroom is tiny, but described as "full." The living room is more of a corridor and there is nowhere to put one's luggage. Air conditioning only works on the lower floor so the loft bed area is very hot and there is a fire detector on the ceiling very close to the bed that flashes brightly every 30 seconds.
On arrival, Elena was front of house. Within seconds she was rude to us, hiding behind the facade of "edgy." She made me and my husband feel uncomfortable with every encounter, implying she was far too educated for her position, intimating that the owners had no day to day interest in the hotel, stating that "it's like communism: leaving the workers to run the place"
We slept terribly but were pleased with the warm welcome for breakfast and a genuinely delicious offering. Pretension re-emerged when my husband asked for ketchup and was haughtily informed that "we have no sauces anywhere in the hotel"(they bring you tomato sauce at any Four Seasons, without question)
It's close to old town Zadar, and the courtyard is charming, but it's Motel6 service, for Four Star prices.
Happy to have discussed this with the hotel at checkout but non one asked us as the place is under-staffed and not managed.

Response from Vjekoslav Bobić, Owner at Almayer Art & Heritage Hotel
Responded 31 Aug 2020
Sauce issues and other frustrations Dear Mrs Richards, I am very sorry to read that you did not feel comfortable with us. However, I think that not our hotel, but your review is pretentious, highly inappropriate, unprofessional and a personal attack with no real substance. I still don't understand what exactly was wrong and "what is going on" in our hotel that we deserve such harsh words? It is absolutely business damaging to say, that our photos of the rooms are misleading as they are giving an exact picture of the interiour. I think it is not up to you to tarnish us just because you did not like the technical execution of certain details. Your sleep disorders certainly have nothing to do with our quality equipment that every guest praises. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My idea of interior design and what I want to achieve with it is, with absolute certainty, far from your imagination how a room should look like. Still, I would never allow myself to anonymously tell a colleague on an internet platform that her job is bad and that her website is just a collection of shabby and expensive design objects. That would be as well highly unappropriate and unprofessional. All the best! Owner&Manager

Hotel is cute and has a good location. We stayed in the annexe which was ‘ok’. Much like previous writers it did feel like an Airbnb. The corridor directly outside your room has tea and coffee machines so beware if you want a lay in or a late start and the room next door decide to turn the coffee machine on at 6:30am!!!! Not ideal and a little unnecessary when this could be an in room facility. If your are in the annexe and have mobility issues beware the lift doesn’t work and there is a large staircase to climb.
We had lunch in the restaurant and the food quality was good.
Our stay was ruined by the fact we were shown where to park by reception staff. A very small 6 metre to 10 metre gap directory outside the hotel entrance.
Returning after a day trip we parked here but ‘apparently’ the back of the car went beyond a ‘restriction’ sign. Written in Croatian and not an obvious ‘DO NOT PARK’ notice and something I thought the hotel would tell us about when we were shown where to park. The car was literally right outside the hotel.
We woke up early to drive to split to get our flight to find the car had been towed. Reception told us it was a 15 minute walk away and they couldn’t help. We retrieved the car at an approx cost of £100. The car was towed at 7:10pm and get the office of authority closes at 5pm and when I questioned this I just got a ‘shoulder shrug’.
On researching the fees and parking restrictions I came across a lot of travellers who had met the same demise so please be careful if you have a car.

Elena (The manager) specifically asked me not to mention her but she is dedicated to her job and the quality of service she inspires is commendable. Our room in an ex-French military hospital was beautifully and comprehensively restored. The Almayer Is well placed to be easy walking distance to anywhere in the Old Town, and a very short walk from the Sea Organ and The Greeting to the Sun, both well worth a visit. Elena's comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to quote, Monty Python, makes her a perfect foil for British visitors looking for an exceptional host of a beautiful hotel. We ate in the resteraunt on the last night and it was the very best we had experienced during our stay, and that is a difficult ask as we didn't have a bad meal in Zadar. The waiter was knowledgeable and passionate about the food without being overbearing. Good wine list. Excellent service from every member of staff. A great place to stay and we will be back.

First off, the good:
Great location
Wonderful made to order breakfast
Amazing room with beautiful artwork, stunning floors, comfy bed, great view of the water
Very spacious with modern aesthetic
Hot water and coffee service outside your room
I would have given this place a 5 star rating if it wasn’t for the credit card issue I encountered.
Out of all the places we stayed, and we stayed 6 places during our trip, this was the only one who used a credit card machine that didn’t automatically charge me in euros and provided a confusing message asking if it was euros or US dollars without explaining what that meant. I assumed it meant if my credit card was from a US bank….
Guess I should have asked more clarification questions as I ended up having to pay an extra $100 in USD on top of my room cost, which was way above what they even listed as their conversion fees on the receipt. This was part of the Dynamic Currency Conversion scam and unfortunately I fell for it.
When I reached out to them to ask them if they could refund and re-run it in Euros as a mistake was made, and that they charged over what conversion rate was listed on their receipt, they said there was nothing they could do.
Unfortunately this soured what would have been a great hotel for us.

Only stayed here one night on a 11 day tour of Croatia. Nice small hotel but a little cool for school, in terms of promoting their art work which wasn’t very special. I liked my room which was a loft except it was supposed to come with a bed on the lower floor for my son and it really didn’t. He ended up scrambling to get another room in town, after the hotel reception host said they were fully booked. But after he left, when it was too late, the same guy told me that he had the keys to an apartment in the hotel he could have used. Well, thanks for nothing! They do get two “A” marks: The morning breakfast was excellent and served in a beautiful courtyard. And, turns out I left my iPhone charger in the room, and when I called afterward, they very graciously couriered it to my next destination in Croatia. Good service!

Friendly staff. Comfortable room that was cool in the heat. Right in the centre of the old town. We were able to park outside the hotel. But parking is limited and the reception said they would always find parking.
The breakfast was excellent in a cool shaded courtyard with specially cooked items from menu and a buffet to help yourselves.
Quiet night sleep despite being in centre. Highly recommend this hotel. Would stay again if in the area. Bed also very comfortable

The front desk was rude and dismissive. We stayed here only 1 night. I had emailed them to book 3 rooms that accommodates 3 people per room. Once we arrived, they said the 3 rooms were for 6 people and not 9. They made us pay an extra 80 euro PER ROOM even though the room category I got was for 3 people to a room. Had I known this, I would have booked a different hotel. It was just not worth it, especially given the fact that we were there less than 24 hours. Breakfast was included and it was good, but the customer service was awful. We had a van and parking was supposed to be included, but we ended up getting a parking ticket in which we had to pay when we returned the rental. It was just too many extra unnecessary costs.
