I found that this hotel has ideas of first-class service that it just didn’t live up to when I stayed. There were good points about it. Mario on Reception was very good at assisting us when our tour company repeatedly failed to let is know when our day trips were due to start, he was happy to call them and ensure we were ready for pick up. We finally got messages for our pickup time usually 24 hours late, I do not know if that was the fault of the hotel or the tour company. Most of the staff we encountered were friendly and spoke some English, lots of the front of house staff speak English fluently. But the standards of customer service we encountered could be very varied and inconsistent. For instance, we found that our room did not have a TV remote control. We reported this to the receptionist on duty. Twenty minutes later a maintenance man appeared, but he had been told the TV was broken. He was very confused when in our poor Spanish we said the TV was not broken, but the remote was missing. He was very apologetic and returned ten minutes later with a new one. At least that issue was dealt with. We made a complaint on another occasion as we left the hotel very early to go on a day tour. Breakfast runs from 6am, our pickup time, but we were assured at Reception that we could go early, pick up a coffee and pastries from ten to six, so we did that. The two members of staff who were there did there best to ignore us when we arrived. When I approached them and explained that we were leaving early and we just wanted to grab some things and go, I was given a lecture on how this was not possible until 6am. So, I apologised to my guide, and started the tour the tour late. I felt that I had been dealt with quite rudely and it started the day on a sour note. This feeling continued twelve hours later when I returned to the hotel to find that my room had not been cleaned. When I headed to my room before this discovery, the housekeeping cart was two doors up and the chambermaid seemed to be sitting in a cupboard watching her phone. I hoped she was on a break so gave her some time to finish and move up the corridor to my room. I returned to my room half an hour later after waiting in the lobby to find two other chambermaids watching videos on their phones in the corridor and my room still not cleaned at 6-30 in the evening. I went to Reception, complained, insisted that at least the towels were changed (we had to use far more than we usually did to stop the bathroom flooding that happened every time we showered) and the bins to be emptied. The Receptionist took some time to apologise but assured us someone would appear. She admitted that this was not the standard of service the hotel should deliver. Fed up with waiting in the lobby, we decided to return to our room to drop bags off and change. The chambermaid appeared twenty minutes after our return, at nearly 7-15 pm, with no apology but at least she did clean the room. This is nowhere near the standard of hotel I would expect. I would also expect that if a complaint is made at the front desk, this would be reported to management, who would then go to the guest and ensure they were happy and the issue sorted. This seems fairly standard practice for all grades of accommodation, but no one showed. In fact, during my entire stay at the hotel I never saw any manager in any capacity. Perhaps the most irritating customer policy they have is to take $150 at check in for ‘incidentals’ which they refund at check out if you have not incurred any charges. Except we found that the refund although actioned at check-out took nearly a week to be actually refunded which was rather annoying. When you check in you get two tokens for free drinks in the bar which is nice, but the gesture is lost a little when they get the order wrong. Our bedroom was mostly good, located at the quiet rear section of the building, with a view of a courtyard. It had many amenities such as a safe, iron, hairdryer, minibar, a large wardrobe, desk, a large TV with international channels, good air conditioning and lots of lights. However, the panel that controlled the lights was not particularly user friendly so getting all the lights off when you left the room could be a challenge in a hurry. The bed was comfortable, and we found the room we were in to be quiet. The bathroom though was really irritating. The shower constantly flooded the rest of the bathroom due to their being an inadequate screen and no lip to keep the water in. The sink plug didn’t work and neither did the bathroom door, so you have to be really comfortable with who you are staying with. The original lock had evidently broken so rather than properly replace it an alternative lock was badly fitted onto the door frame. It didn’t work and therefore the door would pop open with no warning. You couldn’t even pull the door to because the mechanism had had a screw driven through it for no discernible reason, probably by the same person who couldn’t fit the new lock properly. The location of the Central Hotel is excellent, opposite the cathedral in the heart of the old town, close to the Canal Museum and dozens of shops and restaurants. We especially enjoyed being so close to the Good Friday and Easter Sunday parades that passed right by the hotel, which we could watch from the front steps. It is a nice period, heritage property, and although much of the property has been modernised it still contains plenty of old-world charm, especially the main lobby and staircase. There is a small pool with a view of the city skyline on the roof, and a musician in the lobby most of the time. Breakfast is very good, with coffee, juice, cereal, cold meats and cheese, bread, yoghurts, pastries and eggs made to order which are brought to your table so you don’t need to wait. Overall, this hotel has huge potential and all the ingredients for a special stay, their customer service and lack of attention to detail just can’t deliver it. I was disappointed as a result.

This was my first visit to Panamá City and I was lucky to have booked a 2 night stay for me and a friend at The Central Hotel. It is a Beautiful and Historic Hotel. It is Centrally Located in the charming Casco Viejo neighborhood of Panamá City so it was easy to walk to all of the sights. The beds and pillows were so comfortable. The food, including room service breakfast was ample and delicious. The staff were very friendly as were the local people. We felt very safe walking around the neighborhood. We had a balcony room on the corner nearest the Panamá Canal Museum which was a treat. I can’t recommend this marvelous hotel highly enough. I would definitely stay here again.

Rooms: very large even normal rooms. Ours number 109 looked out onto a side street. It’s noisy but alternative is an inner atrium window which I don’t like. It’s all about preference Breakfast: amazing with great service Location: perfect on a nice square next to the excellent Panama Canal museum. Hotel look: gorgeous hotel with nice furniture So it all sounds perfect and it could be … but for the rude and unhelpful people at reception. Nearly marked it as just 3 as it left us all so sad. I have written 2 emails now to hope for a reply before writing a review but both emails have been unanswered which is also not great. One guy in particular at reception has a huge attitude problem and takes a delight in making comments and being unhelpful such as complaining about a request to print boarding passes. We needed 4. He wanted to charge for 2. I travel All over and have never heard this. It’s the way he said it, so arrogant and rude. There were other incidents as well. Such an unpleasant person representing an otherwise amazing hotel. I am not sure I would stay again.

Thought the hotel was really perfect for our small group. Interesting location in the old part of Panama City, great restaurants nearby. Service at the hotel was very good. Very comfortable room, great breakfast buffet. . . Hope to return to Panama next year, and, if so, will be back at the hotel.

We have stayed at Central Hotel in Casco Viejo twice and enjoyed it each time. The staff is pleasant and helpful. Rooms and common areas are comfortable and the location is special, deep in the touristic Casco Viejo. We especially enjoyed the live music every afternoon & evening with piano, guitar and even harp performances. What a beautiful and relaxing stay.

I want to thank all staff at the Central Hotel for their help and support during our stay last week. The receptionist particularly (I’m sorry I don’t know your name!) who got the medical help I needed and supported us over the following days. I will always look back at our time in Panama with good memories despite being unwell, thanks to you. I hope you know who you are! With all thanks and best wishes, M McLeish (with H Maxwell) xx

The hotel is located right in the centre of Casco Viejo, on Plaza de la Independencia and facing the Cathedral. The Old Town is absolutely choked with traffic and parking is practically impossible to find for a tourist (hotel does provide valet parking) so driving there is not advisable. There is a huge lobby with decorative staircase and a bar at the far end, with live music. The rooftop pool is tiny with very few loungers to match. Our Premium Room was on the top, fourth floor of the hotel. It was spacious and quite bright although the very low window alcoves were just asking for an accident and there was no view of course unless one really bent down. The bed was large and comfortable. There was a strange lighting system with various confusing functions. There was a coffee-maker and safe box. TV had some English-speaking channels, but the signal was very patchy. WiFi quality was fine. Bathroom was large with His & Hers sinks. Shower tended to flood the washroom. Bathrobes were provided. Breakfast was very good, with great choice of cold and hot dishes and a great fruit selection. Transfer to the airport was a bit disorganised, due to some mix-up with the provider, but we got there in the end,
