The Plaza Fuerte is a charming historical building located in the heart of Montevideo. We really enjoyed the architecture of the hotel as well as its helpful staff, free internet and low rates. I would have to agree, however, with one of the previous reviews as to its need for renovation. It was definitely clean enough but the bedspreads, carpets and bathrooms really need a touch up. Overall I would still recommend this hotel and suggest that you go up for a drink at its rooftop bar - great view!

We saw this hotel on Samantha Brown's travel show on the travel channel, so we decided to give it a try. Also, my husband studied Spanish for a month in Montevideo before I returned with him to visit, and he thought this was a good location for exploring the city.

The hotel is architecturally beautiful, with rooms opening out into bright open areas. There is a winding staircase with wroughtiron details, and the elevator is fantastically old fashioned.

Our room was two stories, with the bed upstairs and the bathroom, television, etc. downstairs. The room is clean but it appears worn. There is a musty type smell, but overall, the room appears clean and worth the money.

This is a really interesting place. The building has a great facade and the common areas are quite well done. However, the rooms are in great need of remodeling and deep cleaning. The couch in our room was so lumpy and old we just had to laugh -- it was almost comical. If we ever decide to sell our house, we hope to use the photographer who took the room photos for Hotel Plaza Fuerte's website. That person really knows how to make something out of nothing.

On the positive side, however, the staff is quite friendly and helpful, although all quite young. Most speak Engligh well, if that is important to you. The night bellman, Fernando, is particularly engaging and eager to be of assistance. Breakfast is a particular highlight, which a nice breakfast and friendly service. The breakfast room is quite majestic and comfortable, too.

The location is both good and bad, as others have said. It is well situated, just a block from the Independence Plaza and a block from Teatro Solis. However, the street is very loud at night, especially on the weekends and there is little that can be done to shut out the noise.

All and all, we had a decent experience at Hotel Plaza Fuerte, particuarly given the price point, although we would probably stay elsewhere next time because of the below average rooms.

My wife and I just had the pleasure of staying at the Plaza Fuerte Hotel in Montevideo.
This hotel has many surprising features - 15 foot ceilings in the rooms, sitting areas on every floor, a laid back rooftop cafe/bar, a quaint, antique elevator, jacuzzis in the rooms, and a very helpful staff, (ask for Fernanda or Rodrigo). In addition, the hotel is located in the center of the Old City section, near many sites and attractions, such as the beautiful old Teatro Solis.

We considered this hotel to be quite a find, especially given it's very low room rates, and we'd recommend it to anyone.

My wife said it should only get 4 stars due to the only ok bathrooms, but I am giving it 5 due to location (on the best corner in the Ciudad Viejo), incredible interior and exterior architectural charm, staff helpfulness, adjoining rooms for our kids and the ridiculously low price for a place with this many qualities. You can't beat the balconies overlooking the pedestrian mall and square, 12 foot ceilings, jacuzzi tubs, old style elevator, chilled-out rooftop bar, and ease of walking access to everywhere in central Montevideo. We changed from 2 nights to 4 nights because we were having such a good time. The bathrooms could use some better tile, new grout, and more towels, but most American snobs could overlook it. Highly recommended!

The hotel is in need of a refurbishment. It's not filthy but certainly in need of freshening up. There's a bit of a musty smell about the place - maybe old cigarette smoke or damp or both....

We had a jacuzzi in our room but the grout and sealant around it were damaged and mouldy and the bath itself could stand being shown the bleach and a scrub down.

The hotel is in the old part of town and there are some nice retsaurants very close by but be a little bit careful after dark and on some of the roads going towards the port. There are quite a few street kids hanging around and they were all holding hands in line and then skipping in a circle round unwitting tourists - they aren't dangerous but they will certainly dip your pockets if you don't have your eye on them.

We stayed there on a Monday and Tuesday night and during the day and the early evening it was spookily quiet but it got very, very noisy in the early hours of the morning so that made it hard to get a good nights sleep. Car alarms going off, shouting, music, people milling around in the street and talking.

The staff were lovely and helpful and there is a great little bar on the roof with fantastic views of the harbour and the city. The barman lent us his binoculars to have a better look.

The breakfast was pitiful. We looked at it in disbelief and quickly went elsewhere.

What a dishonest establishment. We arrived at the Hotel Plaza Fuerte at 1am on a Sunday morning. Upon arrival, we were told that the plumbing in our room had leaked, and that we were to stay in one of their affiliate hotels. What a joke, clearly they had double booked the room. After waiting 2 hours for a cab, we were dropped off at the hotel Lancaster which is just about the worst establishment I've had the displeasure of even laying eyes on. Rooms were vile. We demanded a refund and booked elsewhere. I have noticed that other people have given the same review. Please do not book here, as it's clearly their modus operandi. Could not believe this happened after we held a booking for over 4 months. What a dive. Do not stay!

I booked this hotel because of the reveiws I read on TA...but I think more infromation needs to be out there.
First, let me say the staff is very nice and the building is an old European style mansion that is beautiful.
However, sadly the rooms suffered the fate of being renovated in the early 1970s and have not been touched since. Our room smelled quite a bit like mold. And the bathroom was tiny and in need of new grout.
However, our biggest problem was that the hotel is located right on the main nightclub street, which was EXTREMELY loud until 7am! We could barely sleep with all the music, yelling, screaming, breaking bottles, car alarms.....you get the picture.
If you have a child, I will mention that for a budget option the rooms are large and ours was two stories with a child bed downstairs and a double upstairs, a nice set-up. But, unless you are a heavy sleeper....or all night partier....do not stay here on a weekend.

Your have just found the right hotel for your stay in Montevideo. Hotel plaza Fuerte is situated on an excellent location and the staff are fantastic.
After I bought the various travel guides about South America, Argentina and Uruguay and also researched what I could online, I decided on this hotel for our group of 9 people.
From the initial contact with the hotel, Fernanda was excellent is making the necessary arrangements for our group of friends. The hotel arranged to send a remis (mini bus) to the airport to collect us off our 9 hour long flight from the U.S.. The driver brought us to the hotel along the Rambla (approx> 35 minute drive). Upon arrival at Hotel Plaza Fuerte, Fernanda was on hand to greet us with her very warm and friendly personality. We were checked in very effieciently.
THE BUILDING is a beautifully preserved historic building with original tiles and lift. There are two atriums with inner balconies look over to common areas. It was somewhat of a homely feeling. There is a small meeting room, a lounge and dining room (looks like it needs a piano) a computer room and two sitting areas.
THE ROOMS, each differently appointed, most with a loft take advantage of the original entry doors and exterior doors which can open onto balconies. The furnishings probably need upgrading, which they seem to be in the process of, but was not uncomfortable. The new concept rooms 401 and 405 are gorgeous and contemporary in decor.
THE STAFF: were all fantastic. Nothing was too much to ask of them. The all felt as though they were a part of our group. They understood the needs of each of us. They organised anything we asked for, always with eager willingness and a smile. I have never had such good hotel staff at any hotel from all my travels throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and The Caribbean. They excelled in customer service.
THE LOCATION: was probably the best of what I saw in person once there. This hotel seemed best suited for easy eveing strolls on the streets of the old city, one block away from Teatro Solis, Plaza Independencia, Plaza Matrix and walking distance to Mercado del Puerto. Sunsets are awesome on the Rambla along the Rio de La Plata just a few blocks away.
This is a good hotel choice for you, although there is no inhouse restaurant (other than breakfast) The staff can certainly arrange some sort of food delivery if you feel like eating in, but DON PEPPERONE is next door with good food options. The hotel staff went out of their way to arrange a beautiful bouquet of white lillies, a chocolate cake and a bottle of Uruguayan wine for my partners birthday during our stay. Thank you Plaza Fuerte

The hotel is very well located, surrounded by shops, cafes and restaurants. The hotel itself wasnt clean and spacious enough but it was very pretty. Staff was helpful, although there was only 1 person in the reception for the entire evening and night. Very noisy. Overall too noisy, wouldnt go back.
