I stayed here for five nights and really enjoyed my stay. The room is nice with plenty of storage space to put your clothes. The bed was comfortable. The WiFi was strong and consistent within the room. The bathroom is fairly modern and the shower had strong water pressure even though it took awhile for the hot water to kick in. The free breakfast buffet was excellent. Plenty to choose from including hot scrambled eggs. I’d stay here again and highly recommend it.

Stayed two nights. The hotel is well located near the ferry terminal, the Mercado del Puerto and various restaurants. The area looks kind of seedy at night, with drunks and homeless people around.
The hotel lacks soundproofing: thin walls, hard floors, poorly sealed doors and windows. Fortunately there isn't much traffic at night, but you can hear other guests.
The room was very small but smartly laid out. Comfortable bed and pillows. Shower cubicle with poorly fitting door and inevitable water leak on the floor. Ok water pressure, but leaking shower diverter.
Average wifi.
Basic breakfast buffet, very crowded.
On the day I checked out (Monday) there was a scheduled power outage from 09:30-12:00. While the hotel was not responsible for it, they should have done a much better job informing guests. When I checked in on Saturday, there was no mention of it, and they waited until Sunday night to put a notice in the elevator (which guests staying on the first floor don't usually take) and anothe one taped flat on the front counter, which no one would see unless they specifically looked.

The hotel was adequate and staff were very accommodating. It was well maintained and clean. The neighborhood though was very sketchy. Countless homeless people and streets were littered. We definitely did not feel safe outside of the hotel. Although the hotel was affordable and sufficient for our stay, we will search for a hotel in a better neighborhood next time we visit.

The hotel is amazing, accommodations are very comfortable, all was very clean. All the staff was very kind! Of course i’ll back soon! Another good point is the breakfast is delicious. Very close to Mercado del Puerto, and have a grocery store next door, have a public bus stop really near. Recommended!!

On the way back from the Plaza Independencia, a group of youngsters engaged in an effort to take my wallet from me in a more or less coordinated "attack". There were 3 of them, very young (maybe even preteen), but one of them hurled a fairly large hunk of concrete at me and hit me with it when their attempt proved unsuccessful. Maybe they were angry or frustrated, I don't know. I wasn't hurt, fortunately, but sooner or later someone will be.
I had asked the front desk if the area was safe when I arrived and was assured it was. That is not true. It is safe in the daytime, not at night. True, I was alone, but I am 6'2" and 225 pounds, not the kind of easy target most muggers go after.
When I told the front desk, they were sympathetic and offered to call the police, but what was the use? They were long gone, so I declined the offer, especially when the manager told me that the cops basically have a "catch and release" policy when it comes to these kids. The manager told me the local government had a plan to install video cameras around the area, which is near the port in the old city (Cuidad Viello), but I am doubtful that will work.
It's too bad, because I would have awarded a 3, maybe even 4 star rating just for the facility. The staff tries to be helpful, but here again, what can they do when they call a cab and 30 minutes later it still hasn't arrived?
My advice is don't go here, but if you do, take a taxi at night, even if your'e only going a few blocks. My incident occurred within 2 blocks of the hotel.
When I mentioned this to some of my business connections in Montevideo, they were not surprised and said that the area near the port where the hotel is located is very well known for a lot of crime.

Dear Mr. Chaley, Thank for taking the time to write this review. We're very sorry about the crime episode that you been through, but there it has no connection at all with the hotel if you consider that it happened a mile away from it. AK Design Hotel always has taken security measures to ensure passenger's safety in a two blocks radio from the hotel, but this episode did't happened in this area. We're glad to know that you would have give us a good feedback just for our facilities. Best regards, Santiago Paz

I stayed here for 3 nights and this is a small, fairly pleasant hotel in the Ciudad Vieja/Old Town part of Montevideo. The port and the Buquebus terminal are right on the doorstep, so it is very convenient for these locations. I wasn’t terribly sure about the area itself which, while having a rustic port-like charm, did seem a little sketchy especially in the evenings and at night. It is also a bit of a walk into what you would term the “central” part of Montevideo around the Plaza Independencia - 20 minutes or so. It is also quite far from the very nice parts of the city such as Pocitos and Punta Carretas but the start of the seafront Rambla is quite close to the hotel. Alternatively the regular and frequent buses that pass in front of the hotel will take you these further parts of the city and the buses bring me to my first point.
I was initially assigned a single room (which I had booked) on the first floor but it seems all of the single rooms are at the front of the hotel facing the street. This a street where a procession of loud, diesel-powered buses thunder down at least every 2 to 3 minutes stopping at the traffic lights at the junction next to the hotel and starting up their engines. I understand from other reviews this happens during the night too. With single glazed windows it felt like the buses were driving through the room. Being an easily disturbed sleeper there was no way I was getting to sleep. If you are a light sleeper bear this in mind and ask for a room well away from the street as it is some of the worst traffic related noise I’ve ever encountered in years of staying in hotels. I asked the receptionist if there were some rooms away from the street and luckily there was. He therefore kindly accommodated my request to room swap to a location at the back of the hotel and this, from a noise point of view, was much better. I was very grateful.
The room itself was not much to write home about, small, but perfectly adequate. It was a double with a fridge and safe and a window onto a courtyard with a view of other parts of the hotel and some adjacent apartments. The room was clean and cleaned daily to a good standard.
Breakfast is served from 7.30pm to 10.30pm in the small bar area on the ground floor. There’s a limited selection of items mostly pastries (which are the breakfast item of choice in Argentina and Uruguay) but there was scrambled eggs and quiche as well as breads, ham and cheeses and a small choice of fresh fruit. Jelly also made an appearance as well! Be warned though seating is very limited and if you arrive by 8am getting a place might be difficult. Also don’t arrive too early or you may encounter some frosty remarks from the lady serving breakfast as I did when I had the temerity to pour myself an orange juice at 7.30am before the lights in the breakfast room were fully switched on!

If you want to stay in the old town of Montevideo, within walking distance of all there is to see, you probably won't find a better located property. It's a modern, well fitted, clean hotel, with nice staff and good amenities. The rooms are spacious, clean and have modern furniture, all of which is in very good condition. The linens all seem crisp and new, mongogramed with the hotel's logo.
The bathroom is a bit cramped, but is still comfortable and has a very large, walk in shower stall, with a slightly odd shower head, that nonetheless delivers a strong, hot jet of water. Soap, shampoo, conditioner is provided every day. There's also a bidet.
There's a large closet, flat screen TV and safe in the room, but there's no water, coffee, tea etc provided in the room or in the lobby. The wifi is the biggest issue. It's free and works perfectly in the lobby lounge, but it barely works in the rooms. It's just too temperamental and cuts in and out or freezes for long periods. The bedside lights also flicker on and off.
The breakfast is the biggest issue of all. It's served in the lobby lounge and there just isn't enough space or enough tables to accommodate everybody. I don't believe the hotel was very full when I visited, so it would be scary to think how much worse it would be in the busy season. The staff can't cope with clearing the tables and keeping them clean, so there is often nowhere to sit and eat at all. The vast majority of the items are very sweet cakes. There are soupy scrambled eggs and toast, but otherwise, it's cold cereal, whole fruit, breads and cakes. All sorts of cakes. There is watered juice, loaded with ice. Never a good idea to ingest ice in a foreign country. There's also 'yogurt' but it's really flavoured milk. This is the biggest area the property needs to work on.
A good rate for a good stay, only marred by the irritations of the wifi and breakfast, as well as there being only one elevator. The housekeeping is also very slow. My room wasn't cleaned before 5PM on any day of my stay. Each time they cleaned the room, they opened the windows and left them open, inviting all the mosquitoes just waiting to pounce into the room.

I really liked the hotel. They have a good price for a night with a decent room. The hotel is clean with a nice breakfast. Located in the middle of Ciudad Vieja is really close from Mercado del Puerto one of the turistic places. Is not a very good area at night but is historic, charming and is in front of a bus stop. The room I stayed was small (standard one) but they have other rooms with more space. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I recommend.

This hotel got my attention by the price and relative good comments. You can see immediately this hotel is family business (i learned later that it's owned by an Uruguayan who lives or used to live in Canada)
They are different type of rooms. I travelled alone on business and they first gave me a really small room, with all my luggage it was just not possible. They have changed the room and I got a bigger one. The hotel himself is located in the city center old part "Ciudad Vieja" which is good by day but by night it could be different. I have to tell you that the city of Montevideo installed cameras all over Ciudad Vieja to try to minimize crimes. But still i do not recommend you to walk by night there, well to be honest there is really nothing to see or to do.
You can walk all the way to Plaza de Independencia and than to 17 de Julio and you are there in no more than 15 min,
The cleanliness of the rooms especially the bathroom could improve as well as the breakfast.
The staff is friendly. I don't know how well do they speak english as i spoke to them in spanish.
Will I go there next trip to Montevideo, it's possible as to me the location is convenient all walking distance to where i need to go and the price was good.

Only a couple of blocks - easy walking distance from the ferry terminal from BA. The street looks a bit scary and vacant at first but after being in a mega city like BA you have to adjust to a different pace.
You get the feeling that you love this place the moment you walk through the door. The design details are fresh and fun, the space feels perfect! All staff are extremely professional and friendly. The hotel is impeccably clean and in pristine condition. Spaces are on the smaller side but very adequate. Website photos are real..
