I stayed in room 5 , 1st floor , great room really modern , comfy bed and probably the best shower I have ever had , really powerful so watch out .
Situated just by the market area with plenty of restaurants on the doorstep, ideal for the cruise port too
Even received a free welcome drink on arrival.
Pool on 3rd floor too

Wonderful small hotel in the heart of the Old City with extremely helpful and friendly front desk staff. We had paid for an early check in and when we arrived the room they gave us had not, in fact, been cleaned. They then immediately upgraded us to a larger room and gave us tickets to the Carnival competition at the Summer Theatre (the tickets are not expensive, but it was a very nice gesture). Since we'd just spent 24 hrs traveling, we appreciated being able get into a room early.
Breakfast with fresh squeezed orange juice and pastries etc. was fine and filling.
We enjoyed the hotel's location across the street from the Port Market and an easy walk to many of the attractions in the Old City. The nicest artisan craft shop we saw in the city is only a block away.
The bed was a real king-sized bed and the AC worked very well. We would definitely recommend for a few days in Montevideo.

The hospitality of this hotel is unmatched by anything I am used to in latin America.

There was an issue at the parking garage and the staff made every effort to remedy it and were overly apologetic by the short wait we had. I would recommend staying here to anyone you're really in great hands and the location couldn't be better.

As a bonus! There is a large parking garage.

When I booked this hotel it was listed that an airport shuttle was available. When I sent a message through the hotel’s website to inquire about the shuttle I received no response. When you arrive at the hotel they make you sign a form pledging you will not bring any outside food or drink into the hotel, even though the prices in the minibar are extremely expensive. Breakfast was good, with a nice spread, but in order to get milk for the cereal you have to ask for it, and on the last day of my stay there were no glasses on the tables for juice or napkins on the table, so I had to ask for everything. Finally when I inquired on my last night about checking out at 11:45 instead of 11 I was told I would have to pay. The rooms were nice and cool and mostly clean, and the location was good, central to the old city (though I do agree with other reviews about how it turns into a ghost town at night with only homeless people around) but it’s hard to recommend a hotel when they don’t seem to know how to get the little touches right. If I ever return to Montevideo I would probably not stay here.

It might have been cute and charming once upon a time, but staying there was a mistake.
The hotel is seriously worn out. I mean towels with holes, old airconditioning not anymore up to the task of cooling and very noisy, pool with many tiles missing and so on.
This is also the first hotel I have ever been that asks you to sign a paper that they will charge you USD 10,00 for very time/day you consume/drink something in your room, unless it is from the poorly stocked and very expensive minibar.
Although they advertise "Home Made" breakfast, nothing is really home made and average quality.
Worst is the open air concert venue right across the small street. From our room we could look right into it. As we stayed there during Carnival, we had a weekend with three events and another weekend with 5 events that lasted till the wee hours. And then a rock concert in the middle of the week. Noise reached up to 63-65 decibels inside the room. Obviously sleeping was impossible. We had a room at the front of the hotel, and at our request they moved us to the back of the hotel in a much smaller room, but the sound reflection was still way to strong.
We requested for a room in another hotel of the same company that was away from the noise, but that was refused. At the end we left the hotel and booked another. We were not re-imbursed for those nights lost. Horrible experience and we will never ever return.

We had no problems with the hotel, its location or cleanliness. However, we were double charged for our room back in March 2022 and 7 months later have still not received a refund.
Upon check in the girl charged our credit card the incorrect amount for our booking. When I pointed out the error, she recharged my credit card in the correct amount and said she would issue a credit once she asked someone who knew how to process it. Shortly after we were issued a credit and given the appropriate slips indicating the 2 charges and the credit charges to my card. When we arrived home I noticed 2 charges from the hotel on my credit card statement but no credit. For some reason the credit has never processed to my credit card. Up on closer inspection of the credit slip I noticed it says INCORRECTO at the bottom and therefore never got processed. I have sent numerous emails trying contact someone at the hotel since this booking trying to get my $463.50 USD refund; and no one will return my emails or my phone calls. I even had the booking agency contact the hotel (Booking.com) and they still will not correct this matter.
This is not a big hotel (it has 21 rooms) and at the time of our stay it had very few bookings so reconciling this matter should not be a problem. I wonder if they make a practice of doing this type of thing??

Stayed at the Don Boutique Hotel during my first visit to the Capital of Uruguay.
Beautiful, modern boutique style hotel in the City Centre with modern well appointed rooms and friendly staff. Breakfast is simple and offered in-house. Many shops and restaurants as well as key sights are just a short walk away.
If you want to visit the beautiful city of Montevideo, this is an excellent place to stay.
Stay was in July 2018.

My wife and I spent 1 night in the Don Boutique hotel last July. (Context - I am an experienced traveler and have visited nearly 50 countries ex-U.S. My stays have run the gamut from budget hostels to $500/night hotels, thanks to my job for the latter. In any event, not my first rodeo.)

The Don Boutique required us to pay in advance, which we did. Upon our departure they insisted that the charge was a hold only. (We booked the Don Boutique shortly before leaving and had not yet seen the charge on our statement. Therefore we had no way of knowing this was not true.) It was not true. They proceeded to charge us for the room a second time. We have been trying to to get the second charge refuneded for over 6 months and finally had to go through the credit card company. Which is still in dispute. The Don Boutique does not want to return our double charge seemingly.

ADDITIONALLY. We were nearly the only people in the hotel. We asked for a couple of glasses of wine after touring for the day. The person working the desk (who was very friendly) pulled a bottle of wine from a "room service" cart and made a gift of it to us. How charming! My spanish is not perfect, but it was clearly not a sale. HOWEVER, the next morning they tacked $79 on to our "bill" (y'know - the one we had actually paid already in the states) for the wine. But only after I thanked them again for it. (There was nothing written down on our "bill" etc.) It wasn't a $79 bottle of wine - BTW. Maybe $20.

FINALLY. Location is not great. Old town is fine. However, we were warned to be back at the hotel before dark and it was evident why. Again, I'm an experienced traveler and this neighborhood had "watch your back or you'll get rolled" written all over it.

There are MUCH better options. Best of luck with your travels!!!

I and my wife and a friend visited Montevideo for 4 days as part of a trip through Uruguay and Argentina. We enjoyed our stay at the Don very much and would highly recommend the hotel to anyone.

Service was excellent from the very helpful staff. The building itself is a beautifully renovated Art Deco classic. The public spaces and rooms are sleek and stylish. The hotel is exceptionally well maintained and is spotlessly clean. Our room was comfortable and featured all the amenities one would expect in a luxury hotel – minibar fridge, satellite TV, bathrobes and slippers, etc. Hairdryers are available (ask at the desk). The bed was comfortable and we had a good nights sleep every night. The lighting in the bathrooms was good and the there was strong water pressure in the shower. There is a nice pool area and a cool outdoor rooftop bar with a great view of the port and Ciudad Vieja. A plentiful and tasty breakfast is included with the room rate.

The area surrounding the hotel (Ciudad Vieja) is very busy and has an interesting local vibe to it during the day; definitely tatty and 2nd world - but in an interesting, not threatening, way. We felt entirely safe walking around the area during the day and did so every day without any hint of trouble - everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. It is an easy walk from the hotel to the various sights of interest in downtown Montevideo. From the hotel it is an easy 20-25 minute walk to the heart of downtown; uphill the first few blocks but level after that. In fact, a few blocks up from the hotel there is a street that has been closed off to traffic and is now a cobblestoned pedestrian walkway leading straight into downtown. The hotel is located right next to the Mercado del Puerto and the truly excellent El Palenque restaurant which is affiliated with the Don Hotel. The hotel is also conveniently close - walking distance - to the Buquebus terminal.

As an aside, our meal at El Palenque was the best we had on our trip, better even than the many great restaurants we dined at in Buenos Aires.

At night, the area around the hotel is largely deserted and walking around by yourself late at night is probably not a good idea. However, it is only a 5 minute cab ride to a major downtown nightlife area near Teatro Solis and a 10 minute cab ride to Punta Carretas and Pocitos. Cabs are ubiquitous in Montevideo and it is very easy to flag down a cab back to the hotel from any part of town that you might be in at night. Our experience was that any restaurant or bar will call a cab for you if you don't happen to see one cruising by. Or, you can call the hotel and they will send a cab to pick you up from wherever you are. For what it’s worth, having lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for many years, though I certainly wouldn’t amble about the area around the hotel late at night, I don’t think this area of town is as worrying as some think it is.
The hotel is an early stage of the renovation and redevelopment of the old town area and I think that the owners are to be commended for making the investment. Hopefully, as the area redevelops further, there will be more nightlife in the immediate area of the hotel.

All in all, the Don was a great choice of hotel for us and we were very pleased with our stay there. I would definitely recommend the Don to anyone visiting Montevideo.

Dear Jeff, We greatly appreciate the thorough review you have shared with us and the TripAdvisor community. We also thank you for the compliments about our property, our restaurant and our city. We are glad you were able to see that our area is indeed going through a development stage and since the time you stayed here, many new places (hotels, restaurants, etc.) have opened, helping the Don turn the Ciudad Vieja into a more stylish and hip place again. We certainly look foward to having you with us in your next visit to Montevideo and hopefully make it an even more momorable stay. Kind regards Fiorella Cerchiari Veins General Manager

I have been coming to this city for the past 8 years... The amount of change over this period is amazing. There is nowhere better stay, and while the idea of such a hotel in this city is very new I will be interested in seeing how it progresses. I hesitate to make any negative comments about this place because Im so proud of Montevideo for reaching this point. And the staff are wonderful and very helpful... The rooms are large, lots of light, but somehow get lost in translation design wise .. a little bit too 1985 post modern for me. Lots of glossy black, and frosted glass. But it tries so hard to be something international, and does so many things right , that I hate to even nit-pick .. stay here .. you won't regret it, and I repeat there is no where better .. the big American Chains are nasty, with filthy rooms and bad service .... For Montevideo .. this is the only hotel worth your time ..

Dear Joshua, We thank you very much for your kind review of our establishment. We do try hard to look after every detail, from the accommodations to our customer service to give our visitors the best available experience. Montevideo is certainly up and coming and our area in particular is being revamped, with the Don Boutique Hotel Montevideo being a prime example of that trend. Our city is an eclectic one when it comes to design and architecture and sometimes it can be a bit too much and maybe we are guilty of this sin as well, for that our sincere apologies. We welcome your constructive suggestions and we encourage every one of our guests to do the same, to keep us in tune with their needs and their likes, to continue being one of the top hotels in the city. We look forward to having you with us again soon, Best regards Fiorella Cerchiari Veins General Manager

During the day we felt no problem. At night it does become kind of deserted and we did walk between the hotel and some restaurants but was ok. Asked the same question to the hotel, they told us just not to wander around the side streets.

Montevideo, Uruguay
Dear Roger, Thank you for your interest in Don Boutique Hotel Montevideo (Rank # 2 in Uruguay by TripAdvisor). The Old City is the country´s main center for political and financial activity. It is also the city´s main cultural and touristic district where the finest art galleries, theaters and museums can be found. At night the area possesses a rich variety of gastronomic possibilities, where dozens of restaurants and typical cafes can be enjoyed. The Mercado del Puerto (Port Market) stands right opposite the Don Boutique Hotel, with more than a dozen of Montevideo’s best steakhouses (Parrillas) can be found. Like all busy urban areas, one must be careful and alert, as we're sure you know, but it's not something to be alarmed about, much less allow it to determine whether you will visit our beautiful country or not. Noteworthy is the fact that nowadays the best hotels according to TripAdvisor are located in this same area. Therefore, we are sure you´ll enjoy your stay here. We would be delighted to receive your visit and make sure you have a unique and personalized experience at our exclusive hotel. The team of Don Boutique Hotel
