My wife and I recently spend 6 nights at Casa Sarandi after coming across Karen's wonderful and informative Guru'guay web site, which led us to visiting both Montevideo and staying at Casa Sarandi. We enjoyed the experience and found Karen to be an excellent host. We arrived at about 7.00pm on a Wednesday night, and Karen was there to meet...

Hi Michael, thanks so much for the detailed review. We are really happy you had a great time in Montevideo, especially thanks to our recommendations :) Just a few clarifications for future/potential guests: 1. there has been building work going on on our street (it was supposed to be over by end Feb!) and buses are rerouted to come up...

My husband and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago after we bailed on an Airbnb that was really subpar. I feel like Karen and her welcoming place saved our vacation. She is an incredible resource and gave us just the right amount of help and information. We ate very well our entire stay based on Karen's recommendations. The...

Dear Margaret and Michael, "Karen and her welcoming place saved our vacation", wow... I am absolutely delighted to read this. Thank you for saying. It was lovely to receive you. The Old City is really the best place in Montevideo for gourmet eating, we are lucky to be located just minutes walk away from restaurants that even appear in the...

"Unique & very special" --- awwww, thanks!! David, your morse code style message seems to capture everything in just one short paragraph! Just in case anyone is wondering what the drink in "drink & full city introduction + attractions + best eating" is - I do a mean capuchino ;) Hope to see you again sometime -- Karen and Sergio

A lovely guesthouse in the heart of Montevideo's historic center. Just one block from the famous Sarandi - a street open only to pedestrians with wonderful restaurants, shops and street vendors. No need to have a car while visiting - everything is within walking distance or an inexpensive cab ride away. Our hosts - Karen and Sergio - are wonderful...

We stayed here for four nights during the second week of March. In my experience, there are two headings for critique, the physical property and the owners/managers. The property is in a very central location for visiting the sights in the 'Old Town' area of Montevideo. The property was an older three bedroom apartment, of which only two of the...

A short ride from the airport, the Casa Sarandi is located in the heart of the "Old City" of Mvd. Karen, the owner, welcomed us right at the door steps and helped us with our luggage into the 4th floor apartment. There is an elevator. The place is spacious, bright and fully furnished. 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms make staying...

Had a super 10 day stay at Casa Sarandi. Guesthouse is comfortable, clean, and kitchen well-stocked for cooking. Within walking distance is the Rambla (boardwalk near beach), quaint parks and shops, lots of restaurants, and 2 grocery stores are like next door. Karen is always available for questions and her daily email of possible activities is invaluable. And if a...

As a solo, female traveler I have been very interested in staying at Casa Sarandi, but the visit had taken almost two years of planning and unfortunate cancellations by me before I finally arrived for my orientation with Karen. Other reviews have covered the many positives I enjoyed during my stay, so I will not repeat, except to say that...

Karen is a wonderful host and resource and her apartment is a perfect base to explore Montevideo and beyond. Karen truly is the "guru-guay" (even our friends who work for the US embassy had heard of her). She was answering our questions and helping us plan itineraries even before we booked her place. She welcomed us in person and has...

I always hate to write lackluster reviews, but I also appreciate honesty from other TripAdvisor members... so here goes. Case Sarandi was OK, but not what we were expecting. We booked it after reading the owner's book, "Guru'guay," hoping to have onsite guidance for our visit. The owners are not in residence and we did not see them after check-in....

Dear Kelly thank you so much for your feedback. It's always very helpful to hear back from our guests regarding what we can improve and what they liked. We will clarify on our website that we are not permanently on-site, to avoid any future misunderstandings. So thank you for being clear about this issue which is one we can definitely...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa Sarandi is a 1930s style art-deco guesthouse and loft in the heart of Montevideo's Old City - the Ciudad Vieja in Spanish. The guesthouse is a block from the Colonial Square and the Cathedral and two blocks from Uruguay's premier theatre, the Solis and from the rambla - a 25-km long promenade, great for biking and running. The owners Karen and Sergio have lived in Montevideo since 2000, love the city and the national music scene and will help make your stay unique with their daily recommendations -most of which are walking distance-- for things to do, places to go, the most unusual places to eat and drink and the most interesting music and culture Montevideo should be more famous for. Karen runs Guru'Guay, a much-visited website on Uruguay, and now author of a best-selling guidebook "The Guru'Guay Guide to Montevideo". The guest house is very intimate - just two guest rooms. Both rooms have hardwood floors, antique furnishings and original art. Besides your guest room and private bathroom, Casa Sarandi offers a cosy living room and a fully-equipped modern kitchen. ... more   less
