Amazing charming hotel right next to the main square in Montevideo.
Old building is decorated in retro style which gives it special charm.
It is very clean and comfortable.
Kitchen is very useful. Wifi great too.
Staff very polite.

First I will cite the good things about this hotel.
1. It is in a perfect location, right across from Teatro Solis and right in the middle of the city at the edge of Ciudad Vieja and Plaza Independencia;

2. The outside building is pretty and nice and it is centrally located around lively bars, restaurants, cafes and a real good carniceria to buy delicious meats, while on Tuesdays and Fridays, there is a nearby vegetable and fruit market;

3. The breakfasts in the morning, from 9-11 are decent. They are not like the typical hostel continental 'breakfasts,' which only have pot coffee, tea, cheap cereal and bread with butter. The breakfasts, except for Sunday, are at a local cafe downstairs that serves delicious expresso coffees with warm croissants that also include lots of butter, jam, and slices of cheese and ham.

4. If you speak decent Spanish, the staff are quite knowledgeable and do know the good places to visit in town and the different buses to take, which can be quite confusing in Montevideo, in order to travel around the city and the country of Uruguay. They do know their cultural stuff about their country.

5. The kitchen is small, but decent, so you can cook a good meal there, which I was able to do a bunch of times. For a hotel, this is a good thing.

Now comes the negative part. The rooms are really, really dirty - and especially the bathrooms. Some of the private bathrooms actually have black mold problems, which is a health threat for the guests. The owner of the hotel, an elderly woman, has not regularly maintained the necessary repairs for a hotel. This has gone on for many years. She seems content to enjoy the US prices for the rooms between 45-65 dollars US. The hotel staff prefers to accept US dollar currency.

The old furniture is falling apart, and it is not so cute anymore. The beds are hard and rough, and the old wood floors and wooden boards for the long windows have multiple holes in them. Most of the old, dusty TVs in the private rooms do not work.

The cleaning staff, who are paid quite badly, rarely clean the rooms adequately for the high US price range. They often do not change the towels in the rooms, and so the guests have to ask the reception for new towels. If you run out of toilet paper, then you have to ask reception for another roll.

There are two old computers for the guests to use, but they often break down and the owner is definitely not interested in keeping them up to date. There is wifi for guests that have their laptops.

If you stay here, make sure you get rooms that face the beautiful and romantic Teatro Solis and not over the Calle Bartolome Mitre, which has all the bars under it, and especially the city famous, Irish Pub, which doesn't close until day break, and especially on the weekends.

Some people like the old look, but the 'old look' loses its appeal when the overall maintenance of the hotel is neglected.

I knew exactly what to expect after careful research. I can see how some people get a little disappointed if all they did was look at the hotel's website. The website does give the impression that it's much nicer than it really is.

The hotel has hostel dorm accommodation, as well as private rooms. I had a private room, and I was very satisfied. Yes, the whole place has that "it's seen better days" look, but it's clean, the location is perfect, and the staff go out of their way to help.

Free wi-fi throughout. Good signal.

I booked this hotel based on the positive 5 point reviews on trip advisor, it was a last minute booking and I hoped it would be as good as it sounded. Sadly, it was not. I don't usually leave a negative review but I think the current reviews here are overstated.

Pros:
- Right in the 'old city' can walk most places
- Lovely architecture, interesting building
- Kitchen available to use
- Large room
- Breakfast included (very basic)
- Seems mostly safe in the area
- The lady on reception is helpful and speaks English

Cons:
- Service terribly lacking
- Unclean room and bathroom, dust everywhere under furniture, the bathroom was shocking I have never seen a bathroom so dirty in any hotel in my life.
- Many amenities barely function - taps, shower, toilet, door locks all with problems
- No air conditioner, very hot in summer - if you open the window it is very loud, there really should be air conditioner in such a loud area
- Completely unhelpful man on reception for check in - he didn't mention breakfast, check out time, kitchen facility and didn't want to explain where we should park - he was clearly wanting to leave to see his girlfriend who was waiting for him, we had to ask for all the information later.
- Noise from the street affects all rooms - I am told room 216 was the quietest
- No parking, you need to pay for it
- Breakfast is included but it was not so good, all you can get is toast (2 small pieces) or croissants, and to drink you only get coffee, you are not allowed to change for juice or any other choice.

This hotel might be fine for one or two nights if you really want to check out the old style building, and if you don't mind the lack of service and cleaning. The 5 point reviews on trip advisor are really overstated given other hotels in Montevideo have a much better standard than this.

We spend 3 nights at the Splendido Hostel the beginning of tis year.
We really loved the place. It's word a recommendation, go for it if you visit Montevideo!
The staff is more than friendly, very helpfull and full of ideas.
The building is beautiful, old heigh ceilingbuilding with a retro-atomosphere made by the hosts.
Extra for us: We had a beautiful room with a view....the Teatro Solis was our neighbour on the other side of the road!
Location is very good also; in centre of Ciudad Viejo and close to the ramblas and the seaside.
Tip: rent a bike and go cycling on the ramblas along the seaside and visit some nice beaches more in the outskirts of Montevideo. The hostel has bikes for rent also!

We had read all the reviews and decided to go for Splendido as the other super cheap 2 person room option in town (Green Hostel) had some pretty bleak reviews. We were really pleasantly surprised - super kitsch stylish decor throughout, 5-6m high ceilings and a perfect location make this a great choice. We arrived on Friday and stayed for 4 nights so got the full brunt of the weekend, Lonely Planet's two favourite bars are directly underneath the ho(s)tel but our room didn't look out onto the main road and with ear plugs we hardly noticed any noise. The staff were very helpful and all spoke good English, we booked online through a hostel site and got 1/3 off by doing so.

Despite being on top of some bars, we got a room facing a quieter street, which made for some nice nights. It is a mix of hotel and hostel, and we got a big room with midcentury modern furniture and a private bathroom. The staff were very friendly, and the free wifi internet was ok. The location was perfect - we could see Teatro Solis from our small balcony.

This hostel is very cheap - in every sense of the word.

We stayed here for 4 nights (with a baby) - and our room was right above a nightclub.

There's also not much around in terms of eating.

Good for young people who don't plan on sleeping much

Splendido hotel it’s located right across the street from the famous ‘Teatro Solis’ and 1 minute walk to ‘Plaza Independencia’

Our room had a double and a single bed and a private bathroom. It was on the second floor but rooms with 15 ft ceilings it’s a walk if you have luggage and no elevators.

Plenty of restaurants near by but I’d recommend walking to ‘Mercado del Puerto’ about 12 minutes. For fantastic food.

From plaza independencia you can take buses to go everywhere in the city any they cost like .75¢ US cents per trip. They are all numbered an easy to figure out.

This is the chicest spot in town. Fantastic location, overlooking the theatre. Old worldly yet modern & funky at the same time. Chilled out home away from home vibe, cat & fish included. Clean, bright & super airy thanks to amazingly high ceilings. The nicest of staff, who freely offer maps & a wealth of local information and things to do/see and aim to make your stay here as stress free as they can and thankfully for me in perfect english too. Be sure to make this your montevideo home, you will not regret it. With private rooms to lots of 3 bed rooms, a great kitchen & dinning area and plenty of bathrooms too, why would you opt for a sweaty claustrophobic hostel? Thanks Spendido for a wonderful stay x wishing you all the best.

Saludos, Mary Eugenia - Front Desk
