Unexceptional to view on arrival, the foyer is however quite lovely.
They did not disappoint with exceptionally large, well appointed rooms. The bathroom was however, very small which was a shame. Some pictures on other reviews appear to be of updated suites. Given there was next to no one in the hotel, it would have been nice to be given one of these rooms.
Location is excellent and a huge plus us the hotel is very quiet. There is virtually no sound transfer whatsoever which was fantastic.
The rooms and common areas do smell very damp. There is an immediate need to update certain aspects with deterioration and age evident in the suites. A larger TV for the space is needed given the room is quite large. Cleaning under the beds and window sills is needed and probably best to remove evidence of prior guests smoking from the bathroom before the next guest arrived.
Check in was friendly and efficient. Staff were mostly pleasant but we did have a weird conversation with a front desk manager on our return one afternoon when when we were asked why we were knocking on the door of the room next door (we didn't). Not sure what the issue was - perhaps a clearer conversation on this would have helped!
Breakfast was tasty and plentiful but very meaty. The menu form is not clear that even the bread comes with a meat curry. We ordered two eggs but ended up with two plates each of two eggs, sausages, bacon, beans and potatoes. Given we are vegetarian this could have been highlighted on the menu. The only compliant was the cheese was very chemically tasting and was a cheese plate of four cuts of the same cheese.
Worth it for the room size, peace and location.
For those booking standard rooms, especially if they are to be occupied by seniors who may have limited agility, there are no shower cubicles in the bathrooms. Instead, they have bathtubs. The Deluxe room we upgraded to, at an extra charge, offered a shower cubicle in addition to the bathtub. The fitness center and swimming pool were adequate and breakfasts at the White Rose offered variety and a good start to each day!
Cons: Inexplicably, I found the access panel in the ceiling of my bathroom left open. The light bulb of the floor lamp is rather glaring, I have to drape something over it. The spotlight above my bed flickered sporadically. The size of the tea cups are too dainty for my liking. Sadly, the fairly new cabinets in my room were vandalized by a kid's doodle. Walls are a bit thin, I vaguely heard people talking outside at the corridor and doors of other rooms closing, hence I was feeling self conscious if my TV volume might be too loud.
Location is fairly accessible while feeling like it's a peaceful hideout from the buzz of Orchard Road, but some people may dislike the 3-5 min up-slope walk from Far East Plaza.
The air conditioning is too powerful (regardless of how I adjusted the setting), but some people prefer strong AC. Good thing that the room does not get stuffy when I switch off the AC.
The hotel is located behind Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Orchard) & is not very near to the main road. However, the amazing staffs here totally made up for it with their exceptional services.
Special mention to Nenny from front desk, Ramli from White Rose cafe & Nudin from front door for their exceptional services & for being so extremely
Our family room is located at high floor & is very spacious. Bathroom is very clean as well.
White Rose cafe breakfast buffet is value for money! Porridge & the egg breakfast set is a must order!
I was also lured by the reviews from previous guests which commented on the clean and spacious rooms and the expectations were not only met, but exceeded. Our room with two double beds was enormous with a functional desk, a walk in robe and dual vanity in the bathroom. Importantly the shower was excellent with a powerful shower head and easy temperature control.
What also made the stay outstanding was the sheer comfort of the beds with their crisp linen and supportive pillows. All family members stated that this was the most comfortable beds we had ever experienced on our travels and we all had a great night sleep.
The staff were responsive and in particular the cleaning lady so warm and eager to attend to our needs.
The front desk allowed a late check out to be extended for a small fee so that we could have a day stay before our late flight in the evening. It just made everything so easy!
We all loved "The York Hotel" and the tariff per night was incredibly inexpensive for the location and the size of the room. It definitely met our needs in Singapore and we will return for another trip to "The York".
Our room was cleaned everyday and we received regular top ups of tea, coffee and bottled water, having a fridge was really useful and the air conditioner was well used! Our room attendant was friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
The pools are great, just the right size and not too deep so ideal for my 9 year old. It wasn't busy when we were there and stays open till late in the evening with a plentiful supply of towels. Food prices in restaurants in Singapore are really expensive and the hotel is no exception but we did have the breakfast buffet once, it was pretty good and there was a wide range of items available. The rest of the time we had breakfast in our room, there are a number of bakeries nearby.
The hotel is 5 minutes from Orchard Road, very close to Scotts Road and several shopping malls. There are 2 ways to go down to Orchard, either past the Goodwood hotel or out of the back door, past the hospital and through Paragon Mall.
I think the York Hotel is very worthy of consideration for several reasons, reasonable price for Singapore, great location, quiet area, nice pool, spacious, comfortable rooms and friendly and polite staff. I'd definitely stay there again.
Thanks for making our stay in Singapore so pleasant!
The staff were friendly and polite but queues at check-in/check-out can form at peak times with only 2 on duty even though there are 4 'stations'.
