First as you approach the building there are no numbers on buildings around, so it was a little hard to find. Outside your approached by arab men trying to get you to rent a room or sell you a ride to the airport. I saw the men swarm on a young asian couple harassing them as they walked a good way in to the alley. The alley is full of money changers. I have no idea how they all stay in business all the money changers next to each other. The elevators are on the left side of the alley. The only way for you to find it is to read the board next to the elevators, the board is full of all the guest houses, lounges, and hostels in that part of the building. The elevators are odd floors and even floors. At night there are lines to go up one for odd and the other for even floors. You might have to wait awhile since the elevator would hold only 5 or 6 at a time. You can't go up with the elevator from one floor to the next unless your lucky to have the elevator stop on your floor going up or yo walk up the stairs, otherwise take it down (there is only a down button for the elevator on the floors.

I can tell you I've stayed at two places in the 40 Nathan Road address (Chung King Mansion) and would suggest that you skip anything at this address unless again if your a backpacker or on a shoestring budget.

The room are small. Two platform beds, AC, television ( if it works or has a remote), and a bathroom.

The bathroom is about the size of a closet. The shower is directly over the toilet. The hot water is spotty (my wife said it worked one night and didn't the rest of our stay) I guess it's alright having the shower over the toilet if you can't stand for your shower.

I found probably better accommodations at the Holiday Inn or Best Western for just a couple of dollars more , which we would have taken advantage of if the prepaid fees were refundable.

Again stay away from any place at the Chung King Mansion unless your a backpacker or on a shoestring budget.

We are a family with a 8 month old baby. We took the triple room to get more space, which was a good idea and worth the extra bucks. Some rooms are closet without windows, but our room, the 606 on the 6th floor, is a corner room that has 2 windows with a view on Nathan Road. Bring your blindfold and earplugs for a better sleep, but honnestly, I expected a lot more action. Great location for a first time. I think next time we'll go more towards MTR Prince Edwards where there is more small restaurants.

Note: we spent the week without the stroller. We carried the baby with our baby carrier. Easier to get into the small elevator and go quickly and easily around the city. And people there love babies! We got smiles from everybody, they touch the head and hands all the time and took pictures.

I stayed here for 3 nights, although the room was small but it worth the price, the location is great, near the shopping center and MTR station. And it's really easy to find the hostel because its located in the famous chungking mansion.

If your reading this then you're probably looking for budget accommodation in Hongkong as I did. If you look at my previous reviews I have traveled around most of South East Asia and given many honest reviews. In respect of the Payless guesthouse before I go any further it is in a great location. But in my opinion that is the only good thing I can say. To get into the building you have to steer your way around all the watch salesmen and tailors which does get tiresome. The building is old, rundown and dirty, once you manage to find reception you might be lucky if someone's actually in but then again it does double up as a bedroom so knock loud. Our room was small and I mean small with an on suite shed called a toilet/shower room lol. It was grubby and noisy the bedding although clean was in Burberry check ha! When you return in the evening you have to queue up for the elevator which takes six people max and seen as the building has thirteen floors you will have to wait some time to get up to your room all the time the salesmen will be badgering you. If I was to go back to hongkong I would budget extra for accommodation. Tip avoid this place.

We bought a package from Air Asia. Didnt look careful hotel options. My own fault. Entrance was allready may I say interesting. People qued to one elevator, other was out of order. Entrance was in shady alley with shady people offering their guest houses. Hole block is full off guesthouses to pick. Dont. Put some extra bucks and find another place. We did so after one night, came too late to find another option for first night. IF budjet is your ONLY issue, maybe. Room was clean but tiny. Shower is over toilet seat in very tiny wc. Corridors and staircases terrible, straight from hell. Noisy. Choose this IF you are real backpacker and love excotic danger. Only positive thing is free wifi and noisy AC. Helpfull and kind receptionist !

When I arrived with my confirmed booking document close to midnight, the owner said Agoda did not pass a booking to him and he refused to accommodate me.

I called Agoda customer service, who managed to get him on the phone about 1.5 hour later. Then he stated that he had the booking but could not accommodate me.

He likely sold the room to a walk-in customer at a higher price. Obviously he does not care in what stress he brings the guest. He even urged me to complain about this.

Such immoral people do not deserve to be listed on a website we trust. I gave Agoda in consideration to drop this listing.

It took until 3 am before Agoda got me another hotel. It took time at that time of night but I do appreciate that they showed they support their customers.

While I cannot judge the quality of the room, the setting is as worse as it can get. The building comprises of many guesthouses and everything breathes low standard. To get up the elevator the waiting time was almost 30 minutes.

I will never get back to Nathan Road 40; it's just too low.

+ : animated central in kowloon. Wifi ok

- : 30min queue lane in the lobby to take the lift, to get the 7th floor. The lift can take 5/6 persons max and they are every time 20 persons waiting

- : My room was ready at 7:15pm

- : Room with no window opening to the outside, the supposed 12m2 was in fact twice less (around 6m2), so the description was a lie.
No convenient space to put your bag. The toilet and shower are in the same narrow space about 0,7m2 (and it is triangular, not square shape)

- : Towels and room shady, durty...and do not look like the pictures well arranged by the owners.

- : the staff was unfriendly and desorganized.

Don't stay there as this place should close for insalubrity !!
