I visited Burma with my mother, who was a previous citizen, this past year, and we stayed at this hotel for the majority of our 2.5 weeks vacation (aside from our 3 day trip to Bagan). The location is great, as it's in the middle of shopping centers, local foods, etc. It is about 15 min. walking distance of Bogyoke Ze (market) and many other places.

The hotel is very clean, from the rooms to the bathrooms to the hallways and dining area on the top floor. I actually never imagined having that great a sleep during my first time overseas, but the beds were very clean and very comfy!

I definitely recommend breakfast upstairs. Their mo-hing-ngar (or catfish noodle soup) is almost as good as my mom's homemade, and is offered daily. Word of advice to the sanitation/bug wary traveler: don't be surprised if you see a few small ants here and there in your food in any Burmese restaurant. This isn't America or any other first world country!

The staff is great. They were extremely polite, respectful, friendly, and helpful. When we first arrived, we asked to change our room farther away from the smoking rooms and they obliged. When I got food poisoning, the boys there tried to help my mom find some generic Tylenol for me.

Given that this is one of the newer hotels, they have A/C, wi-fi (which was kind of spotty), and flat screen TVs (channels are very limited). Although it's a little bit on the pricier side but not by much, overall, I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Dear cmwww, Thanks for your feedback on Tripadvisor and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay! Indeed, the location lends itself to a variety of locations, whether it be for sightseeing, eating, shopping or other purposes. We highly prioritize the cleanliness of our hotel and constantly ensure that our rooms and public spaces look clean and well-polished. Great to hear that you liked our breakfast and our special Mohingar! Also, I highly appreciate you found our staffs friendly and always willing to help. Our staffs are always told to resolve customer complaints/issues/suggestions to the best of their abilities and hope the medicine worked out well! Regarding the bug issue, we have resolved it by fixing our water channels and using insect spray constantly. We have also renovated our high-speed Internet infrastructure and we hope that the next time you visit Yangon, you don't find our Internet as spotty as it was the last time. We very much look forward to your visit again and sincerely hope that you choose to stay at Hotel Grand United the next time you are in Yangon!

Yangon has become ridiculous in regards to accommodation. Cheap hotels or guest houses that can be found in other SEA countries cannot be found in Yangon. A cheap hotel is 25 USD and that price gets one a dump. I found Hotel Grand United on one of the travel sites and paid around 50 USD. As some of the other reviews mention, the rooms are small and reception is oddly placed on the forth floor, however these are minor points to consider.

What should be considered:

1. The rooms are newly constructed and designed.
2. The bed is comfortable.
3. The decor is modern and clean.
4. Everything works.
5. It is quiet.
6. The bathroom and shower are clean and pleasant.
7. The restaurant on the roof serves decent food at decent prices.
8. The breakfast is nice; esp the manned soup station.
9. The staff smile and are helpful.
10. For the money, it's 1 of the best options in Yangon.

One of the newly built hotels recently opened in Yangon, about a year (there are others not yet on tripadvisor). Have stayed here several times.Grand United has about 32 rooms, and situated on top five stories of a commercial building -- a school of elementary age students occupies lower floors here. Other than a small reception desk area and a restaurant serving breakfast only, hotel has no infrastructure amenities. Not really ideal for western tourists, or couples as rooms are small. More of a viable hotel option for business travel for low level employees on a small budget, 70 usd. Breakfast included. Penthouse rooms (110 usd) accessed by walking outside, not ideal set-up. Immediate neighborhood a busy one, unfortunately the food options nearby vicinity are poor unless you fancy street food. Bathroom has open shower, and without anti-scald mechanism it is hazardous. TV six or so channels, both internet and AC good. Furnishings new and modern. Very substandard windows, and major issue here with street noise. It is virtually unrelenting, with brief respite between 1 to 5 am. A full night sleep near impossible. Ownership is in process of constructing two other new hotels to open soon. This Grand United Chinatown is liable to become obsolete very soon. Retrofitting the windows would help a lot. Staff is excellent, even by high Burmese standards.

Mingalabar Paubranco, Thanks for your feedback on Tripadvisor! We take your suggestions seriously and we guarantee to improve upon them to the best of our abilities! We are glad you enjoyed our staffs and furnishings in our hotel. Regarding street noise, we have nearly completed renovating the windows so that they can handle street noise more ably. There have been very little complaints since our renovation. There are also more TV channels now, able to access sports (soccer, etc) channels, movies, news and etc. We would like to promise you that our maintenance team is always ensuring that our hotel does not become obsolete because we always want our hotel to look new, clean and meeting world-class standards. We do have another branch - Hotel Grand United (Ahlone Branch) - a larger complex with similar architecture, but with more facilities (gym, sauna, billiard, business center), coffee shop, restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and many other amenities. Whereas Chinatown allows guests to "embrace the buzz" with its busy neighborhood, Ahlone is more peaceful, but still convenient to access many locations despite the heavy traffic in Yangon. Thanks so much and looking forward to seeing you again at Hotel Grand United!

I spent 3 very pleasant nights here. I note earlier comments re street noise. I must say I had no issue with this and slept just fine. Staff are eager to please and very friendly, even when their English is not perfect. The room was good value by Yangon standards, clean, new, with generally well-working internet (always an issue in Yangon). Excellent breakfast and a decent local restaurant around the corner. In the heart of the bustle of Chinatown, which I loved, but may not be to the taste of travellers used to a more cocooned Western experience. Generally, though if you like the experience of using smaller hotels, the experience here is comparable to what you might find in such hotels in Vietnam of Thailand, though perhaps without a few of the frills. If you can't live without an espresso bar in your hotel, well this is probably not for you. Otherwise, I think the Burmese hospitality will outweigh any small glitches.

The location is just walking distance from the city center and close to a lot of local restaurants and shops. Other popular places are also within a few minutes of reach by taxi. The staffs there were really friendly and handled my complaints well. The hotel was consistently very clean. Probably the newest hotel in Chinatown and price was also rather competitive. Will definitely stay in this hotel again and recommend it to other tourists!

It is in the Chinatown -- many shops and restaurants are within walking distance. If you like to try Myanmar seafood, order the steam fish.

Room is very clean and neat. Air con is cold enough for hot weather. T-shirt can be washed and always got dry on the next day.

Taking a taxi to nearby attractions is about USD 2 to 4 for one way.

Yangon Central Railway Station is only 5 min drive. Then you can try the 3 hours circular train ride for just 200Ks. Worth going !

Night market selling fruits, food, clothes and shoes is just round the corner.

The staff are always very helpful in answering your query.

I really enjoyed staying I had at the hotel. There were very polite staffs and like a heaven's bed available.

Especially, I deeply appreciate the kindness of the hotel entrance staff who found and kept my valuables in despite of busy time.

He was very professional in dealing it so swiftly. I was happily able to wrap up my trip till end owing to his help.

I am eager to stay your hotel next time when I come back to Yangon :)

We did not forget where we are! so we didn’t expect anything fancy like, full English breakfast, McDonald’s nearby, or stuff that we are so accustomed to in this modern lives.

Hotel Grand United Chinatown, truly offered wonderful service, their staff tried to help us in any way they could, even when I wanted to smoke but had no lighter to lit! So friendly, polite and full of smiles, which made our stay pleasant each day.

Location is perfect, rooms are affordable, clean, with all the basics we need, tasty breakfast every morning, plenty to choose from! It was my partner's birthday, we arrived and found a lovely birthday cake for him. We had a great experience, and will definitely stay here again.

Thank you management and all the staff for making our first trip to Myanmar memorable.

The staff are very helpful and a welcome drink was appreciated after a long journey.
We were on the 8th floor which had a good view of the Pagoda. The room is a good size although the furniture is a bit of a mismatch, bed was very comfy.
Breakfast was good but the same every day.
Only real fault for our stay was the cold water stopped for our last morning but we got by on the hot water.
On our last day in Yangon our bus didn't leave until 9pm and the hotel allowed us to use their shower when we went back to collect our luggage.
