This was our first time to Vanuatu and stayed here for a few days before heading to Tanna. Travelling with 5 is never easy but the deluxe villas were great, breakfast fantastic, Splash tour is a must do, and the frequent water taxi made travelling in to Port Vila easy and

We have been looking for a regular beach holiday location for a while and Vanuatu was given mixed reviews from family and friends. Having just returned from a 7 night stay on Iririki Island I can honestly say this was the most relaxing and satisfying beach holiday we have had.

We found the staff friendly, helpful and exceptionally good with children. The ferry service provided by the resort to the mainland is awesome and runs all day and night. We were very disappointed with the swimming – it was astonishing that resort staff appear to know nothing about the ALERT warnings posted all around the mainland concerning sanitation and E.coli contaminated water. Whilst the resort didn’t provide any advice, we stumbled on this information via notices that the government has posted banning swimming in most of Port Vila Harbour because of the high level of bacteria present in the water. Apparently, the ban has been in place since the end of July and the notice states that the ban has been imposed “given the high levels of bacteria which exceeds standards for recreational use”. The map showing the banned areas appears to include most of the harbour shoreline through Vila. Online we found more info detailing the sea front and Fatumaru Bay were no longer safe for swimming, fishing, diving and snorkelling because sewage and effluent materials that are going directly into the harbour via the stormwater drainage system. The Department of Water Resources and the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation report “The results for the seafront, including Fatumaru Bay, following to the end where it connects with the Malapoa coast are concerning and, under the present conditions, the water is no longer safe for fishing, swimming, snorkelling and diving.” The areas include to Paray Bay in Namba Tu area. Popular recreational spots such as the Vatumaru Bay and Sea Front have been also identified to be unsafe. We find it disgraceful that these warnings were not communicated to us by the resort for visitors to be able to make their own educated risk assessment rather than suffer the consequences after enduring gastritis or similar. The health impact on people can be severe and people can get skin diseases stomach problems and diarrhoea when they are exposed to the high levels of bacteria present in the sea. This also includes eating shells and fish within the area. Consequently, we were extremely disappointed not to be able to swim or snorkel because of these water quality concerns and we could only swim in the 1 small adult only pool for our entire stay due to the health risk. The resort restaurant food quality at breakfast and evening dining was well below standard and even though we wanted to eat in the restaurant we resolved ourselves to traveling back and forth to the mainland to find a decent restaurant. The rooms were underwhelming and not the 4-star standard we were expecting. The reception staff lacked knowledge about services available and were not particularly informative regarding matters such as currency exchange opening times, or restaurant advice. Thankfully we figured things out (around day 4) by talking to other travellers who provided tips on where to go and what to do. Internet, that sporadically worked in the main buildings but not in our room was extremely frustrating. The TV in our room and 3 other fellow traveller’s rooms would not function the entire stay. We requested umbrellas on 3 separate occasions and when they were delivered each time all were broken and unusable, so we gave up asking. Overall a very disappointing resort experience
