Taj Samudra in Colombo garners commendations for its array of amenities, including delectable dining options, picturesque views, and a hospitable environment, though there are suggestions for modernization. While the spacious rooms offer stunning ocean views, some guests have pointed out the need for maintenance and updated decor. We recently stayed at Taj Samudra Colombo during the festive season and had a mixed experience.

Upon arrival, we were quite impressed by the grand and prestigious reception area. However, our initial interaction with the front desk was disappointing. We did not receive a property tour, and there was a noticeable lack of warmth and hospitality from the reception staff. The hotel was extremely busy, and it seemed that the staff were overwhelmed by the festive season’s demands. Management appeared anxious and, at times, even rude to service providers such as the musical entertainment. As hotel guests, we felt rather neglected during this period, receiving minimal attention from the staff.

Housekeeping in our room was not completed until 4pm the day after check-in, and we frequently had to call the service desk for basic amenities such as towels and toilet paper. Our first few days at the property felt rather unwelcoming and awkward.

However, our experience improved significantly after interacting with the gym and pool staff, who were exceptionally kind and caring. The staff at the Ports of Call restaurant were outstanding. Mr. Dilara, Ziyaad, and the Assistant Manager were incredibly kind, caring, and attentive. They consistently brought us meals and refreshments, encouraged us to try new things, and even packed snacks for our children to have later in the day. Their kindness and hospitality made our stay much more enjoyable, and we were touched that they were genuinely sad to see us leave.

The meal selection at the hotel was exceptional, and Christmas was a beautiful and joyous experience with well-done decor, carols, and music. The talented couple who sang every night were a delightful treat. Additionally, we must mention that the sambar served at the hotel is the best we have had in all of Sri Lanka!! Our room was comfortable and luxurious, but we noticed that some facilities are aged. The common area toilets were outdated and often in a dirty and unusable state, and the pool area could benefit from a revamp.

Additionally, we believe the hotel should consider introducing a kids’ club and play areas, as the current setup is not very kid friendly.

Overall, while our stay had its challenges, the kindness and professionalism of certain staff members made a significant positive impact. We hope that these observations and suggestions will help improve the experience for future guests.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Taj Samudra in Colombo, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. This was our first trip to the island country, and boy, were we amazed by its serenity, simplicity, and natural, verdant landscape.

A week-long stay, we designed a packed itinerary where we visited iconic locales including Bentota and Galle while seeing some must-visit tourist hotspots in Colombo. To make the experience even more memorable and personal, Louis, our guide assigned by the hotel was a big help. Not only did he take us around to see some hidden jewels across cities that don't make it the usual travel schedule but, he also made us get our value for money spent in purchasing local handicrafts and souvenirs from only the best, 'certified by Louis' stores!

As a family, we look forward to having a good, hearty breakfast, so we were spoilt for choice at the buffet each morning. Aptly called Ports of Galle, the buffet offers a mix of local, Mediterranean, and South Indian cuisine. The staff who served us thoroughly pampered us. Special mention goes to Sohum and Ziyad from the morning shift. Must try is the Golden Dragon, which serves a desi-style Chinese so we were transported right back to Delhi with relishing every bite. The highlight was the happy hour (obviously) at the Taj Club room on the 6th floor where we enjoyed some amazing local Ceylon teas and learned about the brewing from two in house connoisseurs - Micheal and Sanjeeva!

The room was our haven; everything was designed to fit our comfort and preference. Again made possible with the dedicated efforts of the housekeeping staff Rajani and Athula (hope I got the names right!).

All in all, the service at Taj Samudra was outstanding. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready to assist with a smile. From the seamless check-in process to the prompt room service, every interaction was marked by professionalism and warmth.

Big thank you to the GM Samrat Dutta and Hotel manager Karan Mann. We are going to come back very soon!

Taj Samudra is a good option for anyone seeking luxury and comfort in Colombo. Located along the beautiful Galle Face, the hotel offers breathtaking ocean views, making it perfect for both business and leisure travelers. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with impeccable hospitality, typical of the Taj brand.

The rooms are spacious, elegantly furnished, and equipped with all modern amenities. I stayed in a sea-facing room, and waking up to the view of the Indian Ocean was an absolute delight. The bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night's sleep, and the bathroom was spotless, with high-quality toiletries.

Dining at the hotel was another highlight. The breakfast buffet at Latitude had a wide range of both local and international dishes, all delicious and freshly prepared. I also dined at Navratna, their Indian restaurant, which served some of the best North Indian cuisine I've had in Colombo.

The hotel’s large outdoor pool, lush gardens, and fitness center provide ample relaxation options. The only minor downside was that the check-in process was a bit slow. However, the overall experience was **good**, and I would gladly stay at Taj Samudra again.

I stayed with my family at the Taj Samudra. The overall experience was very average and not up to the standards of Taj or a 5-star hotel. First the positives: the pool and gym are great. The check-in process was made remarkable by the unhelpfulness and attitude of the person at the check-in. It was almost as if she was uninterested in us and in answering any questions. The room itself was okay, good view of Galle Face and the ocean but a little dated, and soon we discovered a number of issues - two outlets did not work, the fridge didn't work, the AC didn't cool, there was no kettle, etc. The maintenance person came by and tried to fix most of these or found some workaround. However, the experience got more bizarre as they seem to have a policy of rationing the towels. On one day we were given no towels whatsoever and had to call to get more. On other days we were not given enough towels. We then ordered some sparkling water and asked the person to leave the bottle opener so we could open the bottles. He said it was policy to not leave a bottle opener! I understand that they may have their reasons, but it seems ridiculous to stay at a 5-star hotel and have to worry about there not being enough towels in the room, or not being left a bottle opener. Finally, the food was moderate - the kids enjoyed the chicken nuggets but the dinner buffet was nowhere near what the other 5-star hotels in Colombo have to offer. Overall I was really looking forward to our stay at the Taj but it was a very underwhelming experience, I would not stay here again.

This hotel feels like the worst of India, and not even close to the best of Sri Lanka. Do yourself a favour and stay anywhere else in Colombo, especially if you are a woman traveling alone.

At Taj Samudra, there are a multitude of men in suits whose apparent job it is to make solo women travellers feel intimidated in this hotel. After ordering a poolside G&T, I was accused by 3 different men (in suits) of not being a registered guest at the hotel, despite showing them my registration confirmation. They arrived one at a time while I was sitting by the pool in my bathing suit, and the last man was beyond angry, argumentative, and rude. When I'd finally had enough and went inside to complain, they were all arguing around a computer and not ONE of them offered an apology.

After my experience at the pool, I had a lovely dinner across the street at the Galle Face Hotel. I went to bed early, only to have two separate men knock on my door. I did not open the door, I just shouted that I was in BED! This made me rather nervous on top of everything else.

I chose this property for its location by the sea and the pretty pool area, but I spent most of my time (and money) across the street at the Galle Face Hotel where I was treated kindly and with respect. (Stay there and not the Taj Samudra!) The Galle Face Hotel is genuine and historic. You might pay a little more, but it's worth it for the charm.

To be fair, one gentleman in management at Taj Samudra did his best to try and right things. Chaminda Dehiwatte went out of his way to try and get me to chat with the Manager about my treatment, but I'd already had enough. He approached me when I was checking out to switch to a different hotel, and he tried his best to smooth things over, but again, it was too late. Mr. Dehiwatte offered me a free buffet lunch, which I declined – instead, I suggested he take one of my room nights off my bill. He did, which was nice but it still was a really crappy experience.

The pool was indeed lovely, but on the first day they were setting up for a wedding and it felt like being on a construction site.

Are here good things about the hotel? My room overlooking the sea was nice and clean. The housekeeping staff did a good job, and were friendly. If you want a large Indian wedding, this could be a great place. If you want a peaceful home base in Colombo, stay absolutely anywhere else.

The hotel didn’t meet the expectations of a Taj property. While the location is excellent, the property feels run-down and understaffed.

Our check-in experience on a Sunday afternoon was disappointing, with an unwelcoming receptionist who offered no information about breakfast. However, the support staff was warm and reflected the signature Taj hospitality.

We stayed in a sea-view room with a stunning view, but the balcony was dirty, and the bathroom fixtures were in poor condition.

The breakfast buffet is vast, with excellent Sri Lankan hoppers and breakfast rolls, but the Indian options were disappointing—some dishes were undercooked or overdone. A smaller menu with better quality would be preferable.

The hotel seemed severely understaffed, leading to long delays in room service.

Overall, the stay didn’t feel worth the cost.

We booked a Deluxe oom with city view ..and here are accompanying pictures of city view they gave -it is view of a backyard storage out house with no sign of the city skyline or pool their blurb says on booking.com site .
Check in lady on check in said we have given you room in a new wing .
It seems all the old woirn out towels have been shifted to the new wing for they were well worn over the years .Room not big small .
Taj efficiency surely missing .
Our room had issues with room key once you take out and when come back in the room lights do not come on on placing the key in it's spot.Their maintainence wing tried for over an hour without success ...so instead of finding solution by moving us to another room the supers]visor said I will bring another key to be permanently placed in the slot so we could have uninterrupted electricity .
He never came back !
Breakfast is great and we suggest guests to take half board package as one can have great food option during dinner and it is good saving.
F&B Manager needs to check food ,particularly snacks , are serv ed mild warm instead of hot .

Completely let down with the experience.
Usually Taj is considered premium.
Rooms had mould smell and had to request for a change of rooms.
Sound proofing between rooms bad.
Nothing was kept in the mini Bar mor there were was any fruit usually kept in 5 star hotels.
Breakfast spread was very poor and taste of the food was not any better.
Actually 4 of us had stayed in seperate rooms as we had come on official visit.
We do not plan to stay again in this property ever.
With a lot of foreign tourists visiting Colombo their experience here would definitely make them avoid Taj Properties In India for sure.

The hotel Taj Samudra in Colombo, Sri Lanka, exceeded expectations with its impeccable service and luxurious amenities. One standout individual, the concierge Anushka, provided exceptional assistance throughout our stay. His attentiveness, local insights, and proactive approach greatly enhanced our overall experience, making us feel genuinely welcomed. His personalized recommendations and dedication to ensuring guest satisfaction left a lasting impression, contributing significantly to the hotel's positive atmosphere. There was a point where he clearly mentioned not to accept any rides for free and provided us with a map and with all the prominent places so that we could tick them off. An absolute Gem!

Also, At breakfast, the hotel's service reached new heights thanks to an exceptional staff member, Dilhara. Dilhara went above and beyond to cater to our preferences, ensuring a delightful dining experience. His genuine warmth, attention to detail, and proactive service stood out, making mornings at the hotel truly memorable. Dilhara understood that my children enjoying playing more than eating and therefore provided us with a takeaway box each day at the end of the breakfast so that my children can complete the breakfast in the room. Dilhara’s commitment to exceeding expectations reflected the overall commitment to excellence at this Colombo gem.

We will come back here again just to enjoy the hospitality.

My husband and I stayed for a week in December with our 2 toddlers. We stayed in a club room on level 6 which had ample floor and storage space and a large bay window seat that overlooks Galle Face Green.

The room was clean and well air conditioned. House keeping (C Dhanushka and Mangala) were thorough and cleaned the room without displacing items. They left a small toys for our children which was a lovely surprise for them.

We have the breakfast buffet from Ports of Call in the lobby each morning. There is a large selection of Western and Sri lankan cuisine plus some made to order items. Our toddler broke a plate on one of the days, and the staff were so very friendly in ensuring he was ok and not upset by the incident (Many thanks to Dilhara, Uddika, Dileka, Dias/Janith, Mr Chamdina, Mr Milanka and Mr Malaka)

We also found the pool area was mostly empty which was fantastic for us and our noisy kids.
We only had a chance to dine in house at the Crab factory but we enjoyed the large servings and extras.

Hi, This hotel is located very much in the city and very close to shopping areas as well as restaurants. The nearest one is Crescat mall which is less than a km from the hotel. The next one is the newly opened Colombo City Centre which is also within 10 minutes distance. The other ones are also nearby. There are plenty of restaurants in nearby distance. Thanks
