This was our first stop in Vietnam on our first trip. The hotel is small with very friendly staff. The rooms are very comfortable with all necessary travelers amenities, including bathrobe, slippers, toothbrush, etc.
In retrospect, in a country with amazing food and great hotel breakfast buffets, this was the one with the best Asian options. The pho, and ban cuon turned out to be the best we would have the entire trip. Wish I had eaten more!

We stayed at the Norfolk for only one night on our way to Phu Quoc. We arrived at about 4pm after a long day of travel and it is always nice to be welcomed back. We love the location as it is close to everything.
We didn’t eat in the restaurant but did have room service and this was good. Breakfast here is always good, a mix of western and Vietnamese fare. As always we enjoyed our quick stay here. 🤗

The staff were always ready to help, the rooms were clean and stocked with complimentary fresh fruit and bottled water every day. The rooms had internet access as well. The gym was not the best, only a small treadmill and weight machine. A business center is available but is closed on Sundays. Wi-Fi is available on the ground floor. The complimentary breakfast was very good. Continental, Western, and Asian foods are offered.
Our room had no view, but was very quiet, whereas our friends room looked out to the street, but were inundated by constant traffic noise. Located in District 1, the Norfolk is very close to the Ben Thanh market which has great shopping for inexpensive souvenirs.
Overall, I was very happy with the hotel. We were looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay at a reasonable price. You will definitely get that and more while staying at this hotel.

I returned to my room last night to discover that the housekeeping staff opened my luggage bag and replaced a laundry receipt with an amended one. Simply atrocious!

After confronting the duty manager, his investigation confirmed that his housekeeping staff did that.

I booked through a travel agent , for a 3 day business stay. My trip was unavoidably cut short by 1 day but the hotel still charged for 3 full days even though I informed them on the first day of my stay and checked out early.

Before I checked out the front desk staff had assured me that I would only be charged 2 days I stayed and I would be refunded 1 day. However, after I left HCMC I was charged for the full 3 days.

I called the hotel many times later, the Assistant Manager a Miss Mai eventually refused to take my calls insisting that the front desk staff had not assured me I would be refunded, basically called me a liar. The behavior of the Norfolk staff in my opinion was disgraceful and dishonest. I recommend that you avoid this dishonest hotel at all costs.

For reference and comparison, the Norfolk Hotel is two, short blocks to the northeast of Ben Thanh Market on the same street (Le Thanh Ton), and I am comparing it to the Grand Silverland Hotel & Spa, where we stayed last year. The Norfolk is ranked #38 on TripAdvisor at this writing and the Grand Silverland ranked #30.

The pictures of the Suite on the hotel’s website are accurately represented here:

http://www.norfolkhotel.com.vn/2/28/Suite-Room.aspx

The furnishing and room layout of the Suite on Agoda.com looked exactly the same as room #803. We got a really good rate at Agoda (50% off) and booked only a few weeks out.

The drive up to Sai Gon from the Mekong Delta town of My Tho was an uneventful 75-minute trip up the Truong Luong expressway (40,000d). We arrived at the hotel around 10 AM. Our bags were unloaded and placed on a cart by attentive staff. We were checked in and in our rooms by 10:15 AM (no early check in required). Upon arrival, we each received free vouchers for a beer of soft drink in the bar across from reception. At the Grand Silverland Hotel, we were given two watered down glasses of watermelon juice upon arrival.

The suite appeared every bit the size advertised (about 65 sq. meters). Our room appeared to be every bit of said size. By comparison, the Silverland Suite was 44 sq. meters per Agoda. That’s quite a difference.

Elevators at the Norfolk were in good order, clean and fast. We were up high, had a room toward the front of the hotel but heard no street noise.

Not all suites are equal. The Grand Silverland Suite was single room that was separate by one of those see through bookcase features. That’s not a suite. The Norfolk Suite for the same price had a true suite of two rooms. The bedroom was separate from the the sitting room and small kitchenette.

The Grand Silverland Suite had one flat screen TV, while the Norfolk Suite had two, one for each room. There was plenty of furniture in the Norfolk Suite and plenty of electrical outlets for plugging in and charging gadgets. The Internet was good at both hotels but the connections at the Norfolk Hotel were really trouble-free and painless.

Both hotels were couple of shops from the ubiquitous minimarts, where travelers can buy most whatever they need while staying at the hotel.

Balcony

The balcony ran the entire length of the room (about 10 meters by 2 meters). Palms and bougainvilleas were planted along the railing, which overlooked Le Thanh Ton street directly to the back side of Ben Thanh Market. But why weren’t there any chairs out there to take in the view and air from outside? Our Grand Silverland Suite had no balcony.

Dining

The hotel’s restaurant is called Corso Steakhouse & Bar. At this writing, it had six reviews (five excellent and one very good), and was ranked #151 of 1,632 restaurants in Sai Gon. We did not eat lunch or dinner at the hotel, as there were too many other places in town to eat great food. It does offer a wide variety of foods and enough variety to feed a fussy family. Prices appear to be fairly typical for hotels of this caliber or higher.

Breakfast

Breakfast seems to be inclusive with all room rates as was ours.

Having arrived the day before the start of the official holidays, the hotel was fairly vacant. The hotel switched off their buffet due to lack of guests during Tet, which might be the case for many other hotels in the city. I was told the official holidays this year were two days before Tet and two days after. This seemed reasonable, as we were the first ones to eat in the restaurant shortly after 7 AM. Forty-five minutes later, there were only three other sets of diners, two single male travelers and two female travelers.

The limited menu was still hearty enough for the traveler and made to order except for the fruits, juices, breads, cereals etc., that were still being served buffet style. Here is a selection of some of what was available during our stay:

Dragon fruit
Papaya
Watermelon
Pineapples
Bananas
Hard boiled eggs

Stir fried noodles with ham & vegetables

Soup of the day, usually Pho
Eggs, scrambled, fried, omelette
Baked beans
Hash browns
Ham, bacon or sausage

Congee, chicken
Congee, fish
Congee, pork
Beef noodle soup
Chicken noodle soup

Japanese set, including;
Miso soup
Deep fried fish
Sautéed vegetables
Steamed rice

Coffee, western style
Coffee, Vietnamese with condensed milk
Tea

Dry cereals

Breads of all sorts, including;
White and brown slices
Baguettes
Small croissants
Butters, jams, etc.

Yogurt

Watermelon juice
Orange juice
Passion fruit juice
Melon juice
Soy milk
(not all beverages served on the same day)

On our first morning, I ordered fried eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns. Except for the fried eggs, the bacon was a thin sliver, the small, single sausage was cold, and the hash brown was a small triangle of processed potatoes that was almost one mouth full. It seemed that we could have ordered more food. In fact, I was encouraged to order some additional food off the small set menu that was made to order.

The second morning, the kitchen added a nice little salad bar with premium greens, vegetables and various processed meats. There were three types of dressings. Everything looked spectacular, so I took a chance. (I normally stay away from cold salads in Asia.) I figured this place must use potable water for cleaning greens. Anyway, I verified this after-the-fact.

I ordered just two fried eggs but they came out with double the sausages and bacon I received the day before. The plate also contained a delicious grilled tomato, which was not provided earlier. When I had finished, I was encouraged to order more if I wanted, all included in the price.

As the dining room attendants nearly out numbered the guests the service and attention was excellent and staff were upbeat, even though many other workers in the city had retired for the holidays.

On our third day, the buffet started again with many hot trays filled waffles, bacon, etc. You could still order fresh eggs made any way you wanted and quantities were not limited. The quality of the food and service were excellent and impeccable. I cannot say the same for the Grand Silverland. Compared to the Grand Silverland, the Norfolk appeared to have more tables and available space for diners and more seating.

Bar

This was where we came to redeem our two free drink vouchers. We each had a Saigon Red beer. It was served by an attentive worker, napkins, peanuts and all. Very nice comp after walking the warm and humid streets of Sai Gon. And because we had one booking for two nights and one booking for one night, we received four vouchers even though the stays were over consecutive days.

Cable TV and Internet

Our room had two modern, LED TV’s, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The hotel directory accurately identified all the cable channels available, which included the following amongst others:

BBC
CNN
Channel NewsAsia
Australia Plus
NHK World Premium
RT
TV5 Monde
DW
Arirang
Sahara
EuroSport
Fox Sports
Fox Sports 2
HBO
MOVIES
CINEMAX
FashionTV
Channel V
AXN
Cartoon Network
National Geographic Channel
Discovery
Animal Planet
VTV 1
VTV 3
HTV 7

The Internet had a great connection and enough bandwidth to support Facetime, video-conferencing.

Bath

Besides a toilet and wash basin, the bathroom had an average tub with integrated shower. The shower head was mounted on a vertical bar and could easily adjust to the height of the bather. I highly recommend that hotel management find a way to mount a horizontal handrail about 1 meter or more on the wall above the tub, which can become very slippery while taking a shower. It’s extremely easy for old people to lose their balance while standing in a tub. The bar would be something to grab if one started to fall. The other solution would be a rubber mat to grip the tub while standing up. I know these are messy, subject to mold, etc., but they also keep one from slipping in tubs and breaking arms, legs or hips.

The bathroom wasn’t as large as many experienced at better hotels but it was absolutely immaculate and sparkling clean. It was efficient for the estimated 17 sq. meters or so. If I had designed the room of 65 sq. meters, I would removed the alcove in the front room, which is denoted primarily to the small refrigerator in a cabinet and a sink. The other cupboards and shelves were pretty much empty and therefore impractical for the space consumed. I would have then added a separate shower in this extra space and a little larger tub. There were separate sets of towels, including bath towels, medium towels and smaller hand towels. There was a phone on the wall next to the commode. There were four electrical outlets in the bathroom and plenty of light. There was plenty of hot water and the pressure was excellent. Bath amenities included bath caps, sanitary bags, razor, cotton buds, emery board, shower bath get, conditioning shampoo, comb toothbrush and paste, mending kit and more.

Summary

The Norfolk Hotel had a great location in my opinion, away from the current subway construction. I was told it has 104 rooms. It did have the feel of a boutique hotel, perhaps due to the vacancy rate? We will come back and stay here again for sure.

Everything in our room worked and there was no need to ask about the operation of anything in the room.

As for TA ratings, I believe this hotel deserves much better. I would place it in the top 30 or maybe top 25 in Sai Gon. There are a lot of 5-star hotels in Sai Gon that don’t come up to the Norfolk Hotel standards, especially if you don’t need a swimming pool. If you need a pool, I understand that one can use the pool at the Norfolk Mansions, about 10 minutes walk from this hotel. Besides, most of the hotels in Sai Gon are really nothing but splash baths.

At the end of our stay, I hated to leave this hotel. The service from staff was 5-star in my opinion. At breakfast, we were waited on hand and foot. When we left the table to go back to the buffet, a wait person was at our table refolding our cloth napkin and waiting for us to return to the table and assist with the chair. They did not hover over us but were always there at the right time. Our empty plates were immediately removed when we had consumed a dish. We were asked if we wanted more or if there was something else they could get us. The only other hotel in Viet Nam that came close to this service was the Novotel in Nha Trang. Great job by staff and superb stay. We will stay here again.
