My wife and I spent three nights at the Metropole Hanoi in late January. It was a good stay. The hotel is in a good area of Hanoi - I never felt insecure walking in the area. The public areas of the hotel are very nice, and the staff is outstanding. They were always willing to do whatever necessary to make our stay pleasant. Our room was large and well appointed. We had two French doors opening onto a small veranda overlooking a public park. The room had the usual amenities that you expect in a high-end hotel. One nice added amenity was the Toto heated toilet seat. Very nice – all hotels will probably have to add this eventually. Now, if they'd just add an electric blanket :-) The Internet access was suitably fast. The only problem I had was that the heating system did not work properly. The room was 19 degrees C and no matter what I did, it would not heat up. I only wanted to get it to maybe 22 degrees. I even called for help but the person they sent could not fix the problem. Other than this one problem everything was wonderful. One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

Context: 3 of us – my wife, our adult son & I. 4 nights in Hanoi. 2 adjoining Opera Wing Rooms. I stayed at this superb Hotel ~22 years ago, while on business. Such was its excellence then, I resolved to return one day, this time with my family…. and with more free time to discover Hanoi. Overall Opinion: Outstanding. Without peer in Hanoi & Vietnam ….and possibly Southeast Asia. Sofitel Legend’s staff define excellence in hospitality, doing more than making their guests feel valued, much more. Sofitel Legend is not “sitting on its laurels” or its storied history. Six examples, perhaps anecdotal….but intended to be illustrative: +Reservation: My wife booked online, later interacting with Sofitel Reservation’s Ms. Lan. Our preference was for the more contemporary Opera Wing rooms, despite the recently completed renovation of the Hotel’s Heritage Wing. Ms. Lan addressed mobility constraints of my wife & I with rooms near the elevators as we had requested – while we hoped for a higher floor, we could not have asked for more convenient, more suitable rooms (181 & 183) for our situation. Thanks to Ms. Lan for this and also for ensuring security of our reservation pre-payment: while my wife booked in her name, she used my credit card (she still uses her maiden name) and quite correctly Ms. Lan questioned that. In this age of scams, it’s assuring to have such caring scrutiny. +Guest Support: One mid-afternoon we came down to the Lobby when it was bustling (or bulging!) with congregating tour groups. We sought help with directions to an Egg Coffee Café and some other (mundane) requests. A Hotel Officer caught sight of us trying to manoeuvre around the packed Lobby towards the Front Desk – that Officer, James (Dung Duy Dat), took us aside and devoted >10 minutes of his time to personally explain to my wife & son directions and patiently answer other questions. James displayed a genuine care for my family: so helpful, so caring, so guest-focused. This isn’t about servility, rather it’s about consistently superb support of the Hotel’s guests. +Housekeeping: With one exception, our rooms were immaculate. Sofitel Legend Housekeeping is 10 out of 10. The exception was a bathtub issue requiring lengthy repair. But I mention this as a positive example: I returned to my room earlier than I had previously indicated to the plumbing workers – as soon as they met me, I could see they became hurried (which nobody wanted, the job had to be done methodically) and my non-existent Vietnamese got in the way. I went to the Front Desk, asking that these committed workmen didn’t hurry the work - this message was duly & rapidly conveyed – the bathroom was spotless after their work was complete…and the tub worked perfectly thereafter. And while works were being completed we went to a fabulous Bar…. +Angelina: I vividly recall this bar/restaurant from my previous visit. While Angelina’s has undergone major change in its design & theme, one thing that’s remained constant is the high standard of service, food…and cocktails. My family loved it: informality coupled with excellence. Apart from superb food, server Hai (or Hi?, forgive my dubious spelling) was outstanding – he made the evening special for us. Our initial aim was to have pre-dinner drinks, then move on. Hai served us complimentary canapés – they were so delicious that my son & wife asked we stay for dinner. Hai accommodated us and, recognising our mobility constraints, allowed us to stay seated at our table in the downstairs Bar, rather than climb upstairs to the Restaurant: no need to check with a manager, rather a spontaneous, thoughtful, caring gesture – i.e. Hai was empowered to care for his guest. Hai’s in-depth know-how of all Angelina’s cocktails and a great sense of humour impressed my son and he caringly answered my wife’s menu questions. Hai is more than a “server”, he’s an outstanding Ambassador for Sofitel Legend. +Concierge: less than 4 hours before the scheduled pick-up time for our transfer to Hanoi Airport, Blacklane NY called to advise they couldn’t honour my long-standing confirmed booking on the last Sunday before the Tet Lunar New Year holidays (as an aside: never use Blacklane in Vietnam: highly unreliable). So I went to the Opera Wing Concierge desk. Concierge Hazel (Ms. Anh) serenely arranged for a Hotel Limousine at the required pick-up time (3.1/2 hours later!), noting all my relevant details. No fuss, just a calm, serene -yet razor-sharp- focus on the (urgent!) needs of a guest. Serene: a word I rarely use. +Chauffeur: Our driver to Hanoi Airport was Chauffeur Dung. I’d seen him a couple of times before at the Opera Wing Entrance: something clicked but I wasn’t sure what. During the airport transfer, Chauffeur Dung politely & gently enquired if I had stayed at the hotel “many, many years ago”. Cutting the story short, this lovely man remembered me – he had driven me to and from several Government Meetings in Hanoi ~22 years ago. During the 90’s he had started his career in Sofitel’s kitchens, progressing to a Chauffeur: it was indeed the same guy. We reminisced and talked about the Hotel’s evolution; my wife & son listened in bewilderment to our discussion. Needless to say, our airport transfer couldn’t have been smoother or more fun. A wonderful way to end our stay. If Sofitel Legend’s Senior Management reads this review, I would be grateful if the commitment of James, Hai, Hazel, Chauffeur Dung and Ms. Lan to 3 truly thankful guests could be recognised. And I would like to commend you for recruiting, retaining and developing the highest calibre Vietnamese staff – staff who are not only outstanding hospitality professionals but who also have an innate caring approach towards Hotel guests. Thank you for a fabulous stay. I rarely post 5* reviews. Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi merits a 6*. Another stay at this outstanding Hotel has been added to my bucket list.

We were on a long awaited and much researched bucket list trip to Vietnam and visited Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. We decided to start in the north and finish in the south. The Metropole got such glowing reviews everywhere that it was impossible to resist choosing it for our Hanoi visit, but that of course set the bar very high and gave us very high expectations. The hotel is in a comparatively quiet area of the city and it was a lovely haven from the crowds elsewhere. Decor wise it is beautiful, immaculately kept and we loved it. Our room was in the Metropole Wing and we knew it would be smaller than those in the newer Opera Wing but it suited our needs and was very comfortable indeed. The bathroom featured a toilet which had a self raising lid, heated seat, multifunctional bidet and dryer all controlled by it’s own remote ! It may seem like a gadget too far but it was great and it was sadly missed when we moved on. Unfortunately the weather in January was cooler than the original forecast and we only had sunshine on one of our four days. This meant we didn’t get to fully avail of the Bamboo Bar and pool area. Fortunately on our first night the weather obliged and we dined outside at the Spices Garden restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff were all delightful . We dined at Angelina’s and at the Bar on other nights. I enjoyed my food at both but my wife who is vegetarian was a bit disappointed with the options available to her. Angelina’s was very trendy and busy and the lovely lady who served us proactively moved us to another table as she thought the party coming to the table next to us may be boisterous, she was right and we appreciate her foresight. We had breakfast at the Bar every morning and it was very busy with the hotel being full. There is an a la carte menu but if you are in a hurry it is best to take the buffet option. The Bar / Orangerie is a glasshouse and was quite cool given the weather and many people kept jackets and pullovers on, I expect it would be the opposite in summertime. The staff are outstanding in every area, friendly, polite and helpful. Sadly I did not get to note enough names of individuals but they were all worthy of a mention. We used the spa twice. It was exceptionally good and our Vietnamese Journey was magnificent on both occasions, many many thanks to Ms Thanh and Ms Bong , you are fantastic ! The concierge team were very helpful and organised a city tour for us at very short notice , much appreciated. Thanks to the doorman who helped us get to the airport on time when our pre booked driver failed to turn up! We must also mention the lovely Hannah who always looked for us to check if we needed anything. Overall the Metropole more than met our expectations and we would thoroughly recommend it .

A wonderful hotel. The rooms are beautiful and very quiet. It has a great French influence which I feel could be exploited more in the jazz bar. Maybe French jazz would add more atmosphere. Didn’t like the children’s birthday party happening there at 9.00. though. Staff were very helpful. The Bamboo bar next to the lovely looking swimming pool was a bit soul less but maybe it’s better in the day time. Angelina’s was a lovely bar with great staff. The tour of the bomb shelter was great and very moving so make sure that you book it on arrival

It was a dream of mine to return to this hotel after several years so we scheduled a 3 night stay with 3 other couples at the end of our 60th birthday celebrations in Laos and Cambodia, I had encouraged our friends to book in as well and had high expectations. Our timing was unfortunate as not only was the old wing and the accompanying entrance closed for renovation after being used for quarantine purposes but there was a very large group/conference staying at the hotel so on our arrival it felt like we were in the middle of a package tour. I can understand hotels welcoming large groups esp. after the last covid years but it hardly markets itself as a conference hotel, nor does it price itself asa that and it certainly wasn't what we were expecting. Whilst the staff were pleasant the hotel felt impersonal and busy. Its an expensive choice in a cheap city and during our previous 2 stays the service and ambience of the staff and hotel had made up for that. We were disappointed this time. Someone from guest services came to chat to us when we were leaving who was very pleasant but at the end of the day I can't imagine we will return to the Metropole again nor that we will recommend it so enthusiastically.

Dear homebeijing, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused due to the renovation of the Heritage wing during your stay with us in November. We are happy to announce that our Heritage building has been reopened since December 2023. We appreciate your understanding regarding the presence of a large group or conference during your stay. While we do occasionally host conferences and events, we strive to maintain a balance between accommodating such groups and ensuring a personalized and intimate experience for all our guests. We apologize if this impacted the ambiance and made the hotel feel impersonal and busy. We are glad to hear that the staff provided pleasant service during your stay. However, we understand that this alone may not have compensated for the disappointment you felt. Please rest assured that your feedback has been noted, and we will take it into account as we continuously strive to improve the guest experience. We are sorry to hear that this visit did not live up to your previous experiences with us. We truly value your loyalty and recommendation, and we regret that we fell short on this occasion.
