The Metropole and her staff were the standout star of an extensive trip through Vietnam and Japan. From the moment we landed in Hanoi through the next two destinations following our stay here, the service provided by the staff and management went above and beyond all expectations. Consistent in their unwavering level of care, everyone—our Majordōmo, the 7th floor waitstaff and customer service reps, spa services, poolside waitstaff, and valets and doormen—made lasting, personal impressions, and we cannot wait to have the opportunity to return. I have stayed in many spectacular hotels in many amazing destinations, but none have surpassed the level of thoughtful, earnest and professional service we received at the Metropole. The rooms were all lovely, well-appointed and so very comfortable. Room amenities clearly anticipated travelers needs and details were not overlooked. (The silk robe and bath salts provided for much needed refinement after a steamy, hot afternoon out and about.) Housekeeping and room service requests were handled promptly, and the laundry services were flawless. Two of my three adult children have severe allergies to tree nuts and peanuts. This was treated seriously and discreetly. Controlling for the allergies did not feel like a hassle or an unfamiliar request. Instead, there was a process for informing multiple levels/sources of food service, and we remain grateful for this cognizance. Additionally, staff members unhesitatingly reached out to the area restaurants we visited to coordinate for us, preventing any issues with language-based misunderstandings. Above, I’ve tried to cover the truly special points of the hotel service we personally experienced, but in the background of this narrative is a beautiful, storied hotel, well positioned near the lake and Old Quarter. The atmosphere is one of welcoming ease, and it makes for the perfect oasis in a busy city.

We stayed here 4 nights in December 2023 in a Premium room in the Opera wing. The location of the hotel is very good, staff is extremely friendly and service oriented and breakfast buffet is excellent. However, the room and bathroom are disappointing. Smaller and less practical than we expected from the costs of the room. The size mentioned on websites (32 m2) is including the bathroom and wardrobe! There is no shower cabin but a hand shower in the bathtub. The bathroom has one sink and a toilet (not separated). The room is not soundproof, footsteps can be heard in the room above us and voices from people in the corridor On the positive side: WiFi and the bed are very good, the window can be opened and housekeeping does an excellent job. The room has airconditioning, a minibar and a Nespresso coffee machine. There is a laundry service 7 days a week with reasonable costs. 4 bottles of drinking water are provided every day without costs. The hotel has 3-4 different restaurants and several other restaurants can be found within walking distance. Due the weather we didn’t use the swimming pool in the garden, nor did we use the spa.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
First time to Vietnam and so glad we chose to stay at this old world gem. The property is small but beautiful and well maintained. Our room was on the Opera side - small (European style) for the deluxe double but elegantly appointed with warm tones. The lobby to the newer wing is very modern and maybe more my style. I didn’t book the room personally or I would have been curious to research the difference.
Pros- Fabulous concierge service - so attentive even before arrival. Responded within hours to requests for reservations or questions.
Location is great- walkable (requires courage) to Old Quarter and cute cafes nearby (Habakuk, Mùa'shn and so many others).
The hotel grounds are beautiful- the interior courtyard is beautiful and a very small well kept pool area which I did not have time to enjoy. There is an Hermès onsite - small but nice selection along with a beautiful gift shop and bakery next door.
Spa- the treatment rooms are lovely- very spacious with a private bath/shower to close out your treatment (a few issues with the layout pre-treatment below)
Cons- Room - certainly on the smaller side which is manageable but it was very moist despite AC.
More of a personal preference but a shame the Angelina bar is also a cigar bar - it’s lovely inside but heavily smoky in the evening for non smokers with lingering stale cigar smoke during the day.
The spa - there is no relaxation area! You sit upright in a standard chair in a bright open room waiting for your therapist - we finally got bottled water but difficult to communicate with the staff in English (we found this everywhere in Vietnam, relyng heavily on our translation app but did not have my cellphone on me while in my robe) The locker room is a tiny- six lockers smooshed into one tiny corner. Thankfully it was only the two of us in there as there was no where to stand and change out into our robes. The steam and sauna rooms were fine (very small and VERY hot) but nothing special- a little eucalyptus or teatree essence would have been nice. And the slippers are the same as the room slippers and cannot be worn into the showers. The quality of the treatments varied- ok for me (signature 90 mins) not great for my friend.
Should I ever return to Hanoi, I would definitely stay here. All in all, an absolutely charming property.

Stayed with my wife for a few nights as members of a pre-cruise group with Ama Waterways. Hotel is an absolute classic mix of French and Vietnamese grandeur with lots of space and areas to relax and enjoy good food and drink.
Our room was spacious with a good sized comfortable double bed, lounge chair and small table, desk, drawer unit, TV and adequate space for luggage and clothes with decent hanging space. Bathroom and toilet space reasonable with an over bath shower, the latter with solid grab rail and good shower unit but the bath towel holder was tricky to reach from outside the shower. Nice quality Balmain toiletries and large wash basin with huge mirror.
All the staff we met were fantastic, helpful, friendly and courteous with plenty of helpful team members always available in the main lobby. We only dined in the Bamboo Bar where the food was delicious but also enjoyed hospitality at our various cruise meetings.
Exploring Hanoi we would recommend visits to Hanoi Hilton Prison, The Temple of Literature and Tran Quoc Pagoda. Do try to find time to take a rickshaw ride in the Old Quarter and book to see the fabulous Thang Long Water Puppet show. If you would like a change from Asian cuisine restaurant "Casa Italia" for an Italian offering near the hotel is highly recommended.
Thank you to the whole team at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi for a wonderful stay.

Great location, excellent facilities and top notch service. Our room was not huge but was well laid out and had everything we needed. It was in good condition – and things like the double glazed windows to minimise noise were really appreciated. The buffet breakfast is excellent, with a wide selection of food. The courtyard pool, bar, etc are very relaxing, particularly as a peaceful space in the middle of Hanoi.
I found the pillows in the room too soft, but within 15 minutes of a call I had a nice firm pillow delivered to the room. Plentiful drinking water is provided to the room and regularly topped up, which was much appreciated since the temperatures were very hot and humid during our visit.
It is not cheap but it is very hard to find fault with the Metropole.
Worth a mention – the hotel offers guests a free tour of a bunker complex under the hotel, which was used by hotel guests during the American war. We found the tour very interesting, and hearing the stories of that time from our guide, who was a small boy living in the city at the time, was very moving. You need to book this tour with the concierge earlier in the day.

We were on a long awaited and much researched bucket list trip to Vietnam and visited Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. We decided to start in the north and finish in the south. The Metropole got such glowing reviews everywhere that it was impossible to resist choosing it for our Hanoi visit, but that of course set the bar very high and gave us very high expectations. The hotel is in a comparatively quiet area of the city and it was a lovely haven from the crowds elsewhere. Decor wise it is beautiful, immaculately kept and we loved it. Our room was in the Metropole Wing and we knew it would be smaller than those in the newer Opera Wing but it suited our needs and was very comfortable indeed. The bathroom featured a toilet which had a self raising lid, heated seat, multifunctional bidet and dryer all controlled by it’s own remote ! It may seem like a gadget too far but it was great and it was sadly missed when we moved on. Unfortunately the weather in January was cooler than the original forecast and we only had sunshine on one of our four days. This meant we didn’t get to fully avail of the Bamboo Bar and pool area. Fortunately on our first night the weather obliged and we dined outside at the Spices Garden restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff were all delightful . We dined at Angelina’s and at the Bar on other nights. I enjoyed my food at both but my wife who is vegetarian was a bit disappointed with the options available to her. Angelina’s was very trendy and busy and the lovely lady who served us proactively moved us to another table as she thought the party coming to the table next to us may be boisterous, she was right and we appreciate her foresight. We had breakfast at the Bar every morning and it was very busy with the hotel being full. There is an a la carte menu but if you are in a hurry it is best to take the buffet option. The Bar / Orangerie is a glasshouse and was quite cool given the weather and many people kept jackets and pullovers on, I expect it would be the opposite in summertime. The staff are outstanding in every area, friendly, polite and helpful. Sadly I did not get to note enough names of individuals but they were all worthy of a mention. We used the spa twice. It was exceptionally good and our Vietnamese Journey was magnificent on both occasions, many many thanks to Ms Thanh and Ms Bong , you are fantastic ! The concierge team were very helpful and organised a city tour for us at very short notice , much appreciated. Thanks to the doorman who helped us get to the airport on time when our pre booked driver failed to turn up! We must also mention the lovely Hannah who always looked for us to check if we needed anything. Overall the Metropole more than met our expectations and we would thoroughly recommend it .

Checked in before midnight after 3 flights, 30 hours of traveling and countless time zones … aah, I feel like I have happily come home to roost. In the 3 short hours I have been here, the staff at this hotel have already exceeded any experience I have had around the world (including on 60m Superyachts, two One & Only resorts, numerous Ritz Carlton hotels & several private lodge properties).
Valet welcome was warm, efficient and invisible, giving me an immediate sense of trusting my bags to him while I was whisked away to a private corner of the lobby for a seamless, unfussy checkin. I felt seen, I felt pampered, I felt valued as a guest and genuinely welcomed … all with true professionalism. Any question a new guest may have was answered before the need to ask. 6 stars.
The enthusiastic bell hop Long (not the correct spelling) with great care for my comfort, ushered me into the elevator and presented my room to me as if it was a palace :) .. and rightly so … I love the room, queen size superior overlooking the pool. Spacious and so beautifully appointed; the attention to detail, the clever space planning and strategic placement of furniture and accessories is faultless. Love the simple red red rose in a bud vase with a delicious boxed Madeline … the devil is in the details and in this case, definitely Angels!
The tasteful neo classical design is exquisite with gorgeous furnishings and luxurious linens. Bathroom is heavenly … I want for nothing here.
While I boiled the kettle for tea, Long dashed out on his scooter to pick me up pho from his favourite haunt; this then with great style “transferred” to hotel china and served on a tray with white linen, befitting a hotel of this standard. BTW the pho was so delicious, it may just become my late night routine for the next 3 nights I am staying here ;)
Unpacking a breeze with 2 luggage racks (thank you, one is never enough for ladies); both wooden and padded satin hangers :) Pressing service no problem at 2am .. even offered an iron & board should I wish to take care of this myself … thoughtful, proactive housekeeping appreciated.
There is no denying the hotel is exquisite; however the heart comes from the people who work on the frontlines to serve the guests. Rarely have I encountered such consistent genuine warmth coupled with professionalism and a service level that matches 6 star expectations. Words, no matter how skillfully written, fail to adequately express the feeling, the energy in this wonderful hotel … try it for yourself.
Thank you, thank you … this is a 3 week bucket list holiday for me; however the staff here have me rethinking another visit to Vietnam. You do your country proud!

I stayed for about a week at the end of September 2014 to celebrate my son's acceptance into college and my graduation from parenting. The hotel was quiet and clean, like the hustle and bustle of Hanoi. There are always plenty of staff in the lobby and restaurant. You're usually obliterated, but when you're about to open the thick, heavy door that gives you a sense of history, a member of staff appears quickly from somewhere and says, "Madam, here you go!" I am grateful that they treated me so politely that I almost misunderstood myself, such as by opening me with a smile. Thank you very much for arranging the puppet show tickets and making suggestions for excursions to Ha Long Bay, while also being able to reach the concierge staff in English. I also felt a sense of luxury in being able to spend every day using clean bed sheets, linen table pads and cloths that were properly ironed. The food was also very good.
But personally, if I had been a little more creative with these points, I would have thought, "Greater!" Since there was a point that I thought, I will describe it while being an old woman. Flowers in the hotel ... I thought all the flowers and plants in the hotel were first class. The gathering of yellow orchids in the front lobby was wonderful. But the flowers in the elevator halls, hallways, and restaurants seemed like just an in-depth arrangement. Wasteful. I thought it would be better to devise the height of the flower material relative to the vase. Also, there were many cases where one type of flower could be used, but in that case, I thought that the material could be used more if the height and space between the flowers were utilized. I went to see nearby florists and temples because I was curious about them, and I found that they could be planted with lots of flowers without any space or in bouquets, so maybe that was the Vietnamese way. This is just a personal comment. The roses that decorated my room were beautiful in their gradation, and I enjoyed looking at them every day. And ... the ice cream is served in black, thick, elevated crockery, and that gives it a beautiful contrast of colors, but I thought it would be more luxurious and nice on a silver plate. The taste was undisputed, but the silver plates and calatry were more refreshingly cold from my hands.

The Metropole is a lovely hotel. The staff are very attentive and nothing is too much trouble. It is in great location within easy walking to the old quarter and lots of great restaurants. The bar was good and provided really yummy canapés with our drinks. We had one dinner there and were disappointed. The seafood hotpot to share was over cooked, dry and very short on food. The room was lovely but was let down by the bathroom which needs some improvement. The shower was over the bath which had a very high lip ( a little dangerous for older travellers) and the shower rose needs an update.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at this classic gem of a hotel. It is steeped in history dating back nearly 125 years and yet the rooms are updated and have all the modern conveniences. Our stay here was booked through a National Geographic tour and included an all you can eat breakfast in the iconic Conservatory dining room adjacent to the pool in the courtyard. Service at the hotel was unfailingly attentive and polite throughout our stay. No complaints from our tour group.
The hotel is well located within walking distance of multiple attractions, art stores and fine restaurants in Hanoi. You may even want to include a neighborhood Rickshaw ride experience available nearby .

Additionally, I am pleased that you found our location to be convenient for exploring the vibrant attractions, art stores, and fine dining options that Hanoi has to offer. We believe that the surrounding neighborhood adds an extra layer of richness to our guests' experiences. The suggestion of a neighborhood Rickshaw ride sounds like a delightful way to immerse yourself in the local culture, and I hope future guests will consider this charming option. Once again, thank you for your wonderful feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future to create even more memorable experiences at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi.
