Having stayed a night in fatimas (the worst backpacker place ever) we spent 2 nights here and it was so much better. Clean dorms and bathrooms, as well as a well equipped kitchen make this a great budget place to stay (to make up for the African prices, although it is the cheapest in Maputo) Helpful staff as well. Only... More

Very little to fault about this place. Location is very central, and perfect for walking around town. Dorms and all facilities are clean. Kitchen is decently stocked, with free tea and coffee. By Mozambique standards, it's very good - and reasonably priced (albeit expensive for southern Africa generally). I think the main strength is the staff. They're incredibly helpful, and... More

stayed here in dorm room for two nights. We liked the location, which is excellent, smack in the center. The balcony with a view, friendly receptionists, lounge area and a kind of trust based fridge system give the place a homey feel. Baths and toilets were clean, and not too crowded, and the walls were full of information on everything... More

We went here after a not-great experience at Fatima's, and WOW, it was so much better. Up to the standards of some of the best hostels I've stayed in. Nice dorm rooms, bathrooms. Everything was sparkling clean. There was a lounge to hang out in and even a washing machine. There was also a nice terrace to eat breakfast in.... More

The Base is probably the best backpacker you can find in Maputo. It's very well located and the price is reasonable considering the country standards. Our double bedroom was clean and so were the rest of the facilities. The staff is also very helpful. We have the impression that the best double room is perhaps the one on the first... More

The Base is by far one of the cheapest places to stay in Maputo, which is a city seemingly lacking in infrastructure and struggling to keep up with demand for accommodation of foreigners. As such, hotel prices can be sky-high. The Base is one place to stay that wont cost the earth. The backpacker-friendly staff and decent communal facilities make... More

In my opinion, it is the best budget accommodation in Maputo. It is in a convenient location, it is cheap, clean and has all the basics (taking into consideration that it is in Africa, and it shouldn't be compared with hostels in other parts of the world). The staff is really friendly there too. I would recommend this place for... More

We stay here we do tours of Maputo. The staff are always friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you feel safe in the city. The hostel could be so much better with a little love and paint. The doubles are basic and if you only want to sleep here then they are fine. The six... More

With a small infusion of cash and a more visible owner presence, this could be a really amazing backpackers. As it is, it's frustratingly average. The rooms upstairs are okay, especially the double. Avoid the rooms in the basement, nasty things. There is the potential for an amazing terrace with views of Maputo if the owner showing any incentive. The... More

Just off one of the main avenues in Maputo, this makes a good base for exploring the city. The staff are very friendly and despite other reviews, the basement dorm is fine. Very slightly must but there are only four beds so it's quite private. The only complaint would be that there's a water pump or something that makes a... More

“Try to book in advance in the upstairs dorms. Downstairs is pretty dirty.”

“2 private dorms, the one downstairs is a bit quieter.”

“Always carry your passport/ID with you around Maputo. Mark that police will want to check your visa and pretend there's a problem with it so that you have to pay them some leave-me-alone fee. You can easily fend them off with a simple "OK, let's head for the station and clear this up." They will surely let you go then.”

“Given the choice, I would try to avoid the basement dorm, as you might be disturbed by staff, or people walking through to the double room at the back. The upstairs dorms look a lot nicer and brighter. However, if you're staying in a double room and you want to get a good nights' sleep, I would recommend the basement double room because it has a big powerful fan (the upstairs doubles don't).”
