We took the shuttle bus from base backpackers to Tofo and paid 850mt per person. They sold the bus for us as "door to door" service. We were supposed to be dropped off at a guesthouse in Tofo beach. We got on the bus at 5am and after 2,5 hours of picking people up from Junta we finally left Maputo....

The base has all the cosyness and service that Fatima's lacks... Also this place offers cheaper shuttle to Tofo than Fatima's... If you're travelling further on with the Intercape busses, The Base is also only a 5 minute walk away from the Intercape office, which also is the pickup point for the busses.

Booked a double room for myself (I feel a bit too old for dorms) and although I have travelled through much of the world, this was the first place I have actually walked out of. The room was in a dank, damp and dirty basement, in the middle of an occupied two-bed dorm, and two flights of stairs away from...

Mozambique is really bad for backpackers and hostels. There were two that we stayed at and they are similar. This one does not have a bar, the other one does. We stayed in the dorms downstairs and it was pretty dirty. The mosquito nets are nice but the ground was filthy. Also the fridge downstairs looked like it hadn't been...

Had a good experience here for the 3-4 nights I stayed. It's a small hostel, which keeps the noise level down. There are two dorm rooms and one private room. A common computer with internet in the lobby, but very slow. Nice porch out back for relaxing or eating. Decent kitchen and dining room. Can use the clothes lines out...

I traveled with my colleagues there. Very good location in downtown, close to Costa de sol, beach, and shopping malls. The amenities are simple and basic, adequate size kitchen and there are shops nearby so do everything else outside and comeback for sleep. Sleeping wasn't too bad.

We stayed at Base Backpackers on our first night in Maputo and had a very bad experience. We came in the evening and were very tired from our ride. First of all the place is realy basic and not very comfortable. The kitchen is small and badly equipped to cook. The bar doesn't exist anymore. We stayed in the back...

Location is not bad, everything interesting in Maputo is within walking distance, although some areas around The Base are "no-go" so it's worth asking the staff (isolated = dangerous areas if you take the wrong direction). Friendly and helpful staff. The private romos and the bathrooms are basic but clean. Old kitchen for communal use. As any backpackers accomodation sometimes...

Best value of Maputos terrible backpackers. Friendly though amateurish staff. Clean but tatty rooms and showers. Good location and access to the sights Don't use their Tofo shuttle!!! Was supposed to leave at 5am, didn't until 8am. Try evil Fatima's shuttle. Fatima's rooms are a rip off and twice the price

Maputo is an expensive city of not very many options, and The Base reflects this. But Maputo is also a charming city, whereas the Base is merely functional and could try harder. It's an expensive backpacker option for what you get. The room included a rough grey blanket on the foot of the bed, an anaemic grey sheet, two pancake-flat...

“Try to book in advance in the upstairs dorms. Downstairs is pretty dirty.”

“Always carry your passport/ID with you around Maputo. Mark that police will want to check your visa and pretend there's a problem with it so that you have to pay them some leave-me-alone fee. You can easily fend them off with a simple "OK, let's head for the station and clear this up." They will surely let you go then.”

“Given the choice, I would try to avoid the basement dorm, as you might be disturbed by staff, or people walking through to the double room at the back. The upstairs dorms look a lot nicer and brighter. However, if you're staying in a double room and you want to get a good nights' sleep, I would recommend the basement double room because it has a big powerful fan (the upstairs doubles don't).”
