Back in November, a friend and I had a seven night stay here and couldn’t have been happier with our choice. We arrived mid-evening to a very warm and friendly welcome from Olli and his team, followed by the most wonderful and freshly prepared dinner (an exquisite selection of small Moroccan salads for our starter and a mouth-watering tagine for our main). We also had dinner (kefta with eggs) on another night which was equally enjoyable, as well as harira on two afternoons which was delicious and (wait for it!) complimentary. If we thought that dinner was excellent, breakfast every day was superb… and I mean absolutely superb. For the uninitiated, Moroccan breakfasts are heavily weighted towards carbohydrates, with different breads, including the moreish harcha, pancakes (yummy msemen and beghrir), croissants, pain au chocolat, pastries and jams, as well as some form of eggs usually being offered too. However, after my friend and I mentioned that, for health reasons, we’re not into a lot of carbohydrates (delicious as they may be!!), we were presented with a morning feast of different freshly prepared fruits, yoghurts, amlou (a real favourite of mine and so delicious!) salads, cheeses, along with eggs cooked in a different way each morning. All of this was topped off with freshly squeezed orange juice and a choice of hot drinks which, in my case, was oodles of hot coffee and hot milk, both presented in individual pots. Unsurprisingly, breakfast, which was served on the peaceful terrace in the sunshine that became ever brighter and hotter as the week went by, became an increasingly lengthy affair as we struggled to tear ourselves away from the table each morning! Service was tip-top and, despite our lingering and my requests for top ups of coffee and hot milk, we never felt hurried. We each had our own room, my friend’s being on the first floor whilst mine was on the ground floor. Although the beds are firm, this suited me and I slept very well for the duration of our stay. Unfortunately, my friend reported being disturbed by some thoughtless, noisy guests returning at a late hour who were talking loudly but I’m obviously as deaf as a post because I heard nothing and, apparently, they were standing close to my room! Importantly, there was plenty of hot water for showers and a good supply of towels which were changed on demand. Housekeeping was spot on and, because my room was not being occupied by incoming guests on the day of our departure, we were kindly given complimentary use until tea time when we left for the airport. As well as the all-round comfort, fantastic food, delightful staff and wonderful hospitality, the other reasons for Riad Dar Najat being an appealing choice are its location, being only a seven or eight minutes walk to Djemaa El Fna, and genuine value for money. These days, there are so many riads in Marrakech that, if you don’t know the city, choosing one is a bit like trying to find the proverbial needle in the haystack. I do know the city, and many of its accommodations, and can say that, hands down, Riad Dar Najat is one of the best in its category, particularly for the price, the food and staff. I can find no fault and have no doubt that I shall return at some point.…
