Have been here for 2+ days, staying in a beachfront villa. Value is slightly below average. Great location. Food is good, but the cook likes to use the same spices/seasoning in her/his dishes; so it doesn’t feel like there is a lot of variety. Villa is alright. The front door has a huge gap at the bottom, so the a/c is having a hard time keeping up. Wide gap in the outside sliding door to the bedroom. Hot tub is not quite working. Staff is timid, although helpful. Sometimes they seemed unsure about whether we are really staying here. Cost of the stay can get out of hand because they charge you for every little thing. The place is very relaxing, though, and the pool and deck are hard to beat.

Hotel's Favourite
We just got back from celebrating our 20th anniversary at this little gem in beautiful Belize. We cannot say enough good things about this resort, and absolutely hope to return. The resort is beautiful and extremely well maintained. It is a low key boutique setting with a relaxed island vibe and an emphasis on service and attention to detail. We stayed in a seaside casita and the view from our room was spectacular. Loved the nightly turn down service and the romantic, caribbean themed rooms. Other than the view and overall relaxing ambiance of the resort, highlights included a 1/2 day of reef fishing (where the chef prepares what you catch) and a resort snorkel trip to the marine preserve and shark ray alley. Fabulous snorkeling included multiple spotted eagle rays, an eel, nurse sharks and endless beautiful fish and coral. The staff at Matachica is top notch - attentive, friendly, and always smiling. We thought we would venture out and try other island restaurants, but we wound up eating almost every meal at the Mambo restaurant onsite because it was just that good. Delicious happy hour cocktails at Danny's Tree Bar capped off every afternoon. The resort's slogan that "the world can wait" perfectly sums up our experience at this tiny slice of paradise!

Perfect post-COVID getaway to this little slice of heaven that is colored cabanas ringing the beach front. Staff is friendly and go out of their way to accommodate. They even remembered our names and what type of wine we each drank! Props to concierge Jose, knowledgeable about his country and helpful to these visitors. Food in the Mambo is delicious. Enjoyed the snapper and shrimp cooked in banana leaf. Pick the daily continental breakfast: the tasty wheat bread, muffin of the day, fruit and OJ are plenty. Lots to do: snorkeling, fishing, exploring other islands or a jaunt to San Pedro or Secret Beach, not so much a secret anymore. (Dismayed by the development of prefabs leading up to that leeward beach.) Or just lounge around the pool, strategically located behind the main building to avoid the seaward winds. Treat yourself to some body work. The beds are comfy and bathroom well appointed.. One critique: it would be great to have a separate air conditioner in the bath. We were particularly impressed with the resort's COVID consciousness: employees, even grounds keepers, ALWAYS masked and an arranged test upon your departure in the comfort of the billiard room. The guests behaved too!

Our first vacation in a year and a half, first time travelling since the pandemic- and we could not have had a better experience. The natural beauty of Ambergris Caye is unparalleled- and we are seasoned travelers, so we've seen a lot around this big beautiful world of ours! We found the weather to be perfect, 84-85 degrees, very humid, but, windy every day (which kept the humidity comfortable and the bugs away, we didn't experience any mosquitos). The resort staff was so warm and friendly. They were very laid back. Classy resort, but so unpretentious- we really appreciated that. NO KIDS (thank you!!!)= quiet time, all the time. Very private, quiet, relaxing. We often felt like we had the place to ourselves! Our casita was impeccably clean, with daily maid service. Literally steps from the sea. The king bed was very comfortable, and had a mosquito net, but we didn't need it. The bathroom was well appointed and we loved the modern walk-in glass rain shower. The AC was nice to have, but we usually slept with all windows/doors open so we could hear the ocean and feel the breeze. The food was very good; not out-of-this world, but very, very good. Prices were reasonable considering the level of luxury. The array of amenities (free kayaks and bikes; chartered fishing and snorkeling trips, a spa, a gorgeous pool, etc.) really made the experience all the more fun. The golf cart rentals made getting around and exploring the island easy (tip: no real roads on the island makes for a bumpy ride, might not be to everyone's liking). The wildlife was beautiful. Everything was just perfect. It was pure magic. The staff, especially Jordy, were so friendly. Jordy was so conscientious about making sure we were taken care of, and had such a great sense of humour. He is a very hard worker, yet personable, friendly-- did not feel like a guest-hotel employee relationship, but more like a friend. We appreciated that. We don't like to be treated "special" on vacation, we like to be on the level with the locals. Everything about Matachica and our trip to Belize was so perfect, we are already planning our next trip. The ONLY thing I could even possibly say that was a little disappointing-- we missed lobster season- have to be there July- January for that...hence a November trip in the works already!! Thank you Jordy and everyone at Matachica!! PS- if the room had a fridge to keep our water/drinks cold, then it would be even better-- that was the only thing we really found ourselves needing and did not have. Coffee service in the room would be a nice addition, too, instead of having to sleepily stumble over to the restaurant every morning to get our fix. Otherwise, 10/10! A+!

Arriving at Matachica is easy. After taking the puddle jumper flight to San Pedro, the kind staff will load your luggage on a golf cart and whisk you in under 5 minutes to a motorboat for a 20 minute ride to the resort. My pastel painted casita (white interior) was one row back from the ones that face the beach but I still had a great view of the Caribbean. Rooms are pleasant and open. Beds have comfy sheets and an (unnecessary?) mosquito net. Nice chaise/couch for reading inside and hammock outside. A/C is only in the bed/living space but not in the bathroom, which has a fan but still can be a bit hot/humid. Humid bathroom is also where the closet and clothing drawers are. Henckels (too smelly for my taste) bath products. The A/C cools just enough going full blast. Two bars—tree bar by the pool and another at the restaurant’s beach side—are available. They are really just steps apart. Tuesday taco night (read: happy hour) from 4-7 had a “Margaritaville” style band at tree bar, which you could definitely hear in my room near the pool if that’s going to bother you. Drinks run around US$15 inclusive of tax and tip. WiFi available throughout the resort. Usually quite good. Two open air restaurants—the bistro and Mambo—that operate out of the same kitchen. Mambo is fancier and just for dinner. Both very solid. Good ceviche at the bistro for lunch. Bananas foster ice cream dessert was a real treat, as was the snapper cooked in a banana leaf. Spring rolls were meh. As throughout La Isla Bonita, there is a lot of seaweed or algae along the beach that makes swimming there less desirable. Steady wind can also make blowing sand a bit tough for some sitting in beach chaises. Nice lounges for twoon the long dock avoid this problem if you’re cool with direct sun. Nearby pool has plenty of chaises and umbrellas. Get towels at the front desk, though they seemed to run out with regularity. Adults only crowd seemed heavy on honeymooners or a few years after while I was there. But it’s definitely a low key vibe and not a young person’s party place. Some older couples too. I enjoyed the snorkel trip to see the reef and sharks at Hol Chan. It’s about a 25 minute bumpy golf cart ride to San Pedro but you can also take the boat. Friendly staff is eager to please. When my A/C started to leak copiously, it was cleaned up and fixed very quickly. Good spa facilities but no tennis or other land sports. Appeared to be a jet ski you could use, as well as kayaks. In short, as good a resort as you’re going to find on Ambergris. Classy but relaxing and not pretentious. Recommended.
