Hotel's Favourite
The first picture shown here is I believe the room we stayed in. Corner room with a balcony. 301. This was one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in in our many years of travel here in the US and in Europe and Asia. Real wood furniture, high quality, in the room and on the balcony. No cheapo plastic chairs or folding beach chairs for sure. The bathroom is awesome. Classic look fixtures but top of the line. It is within walking distance of the ferry, shops, restaurants, beaches, tours, grocery, library, museums. Yet far enough that we can’t hear any bar or restaurant noise at night.
Enjoyed the added perk of complementary taxi pickup and drop off to the ferry. (Just tip the driver $5 or so)
Continental breakfast was adequate. Eating in the garden area while watching the large fish (koi?) was amazing.
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Communication was very good - before, during and after the trip.
I recommend this hotel, our first time in Catalina Island with the family was special. We hope to return someday and will definitely stay here again.

This hotel is conveniently located near the heart of the city and steps from the Avalon Bay and is a lovely intimate property. We’ve stayed here one other time and this time splurged for the 3rd floor private balcony Ocean View room 306. It was so enjoyable to sit on our balcony and watch the sunrise/moonrise and Bay activities. The room is small but well appointed with 2 mini frig’s, microwave, coffee maker, fabulous toiletries and a very comfortable queen bed positioned against the wall for maximum utilization of space. One might ask if it was difficult to exit on the wall side of bed but surprisingly not, even with my osteoarthritis knees. One note, you might hear footsteps on the stairwell outside the room and on the rooftop, but minimal and not disturbing. There is a relaxing courtyard garden with Koi Pond where a continental breakfast is served. Another true property asset is the fabulous rooftop deck with amazing views where you can sunbathe in comfy lounges. The rooftop deck is closed 10pm-8am so you are not disturbed by footsteps in this room location. They have FANTASTIC STAFF members Laurie, Evelyn, Titaua and Shane that are very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. Restaurants, activities and a Vons grocery are easily walkable. During this time of COVID-19 restaurants are limited during lunch time but for dinner we had the pleasure of dining on the beach for our 36th Anniversary. We will be back again!

While my husband and I had visited the island a couple of times previously, we had never stayed overnight, so I had no idea which hotel to choose for our 3 night stay. There weren't a lot of choices (July), but the reviews for this hotel were really good, so I decided to take a chance and I am so glad we did!
FIRST of all, this hotel provides FREE taxi service to and from the pier, alleviating the need to drag your luggage up (and down) the steep hills. I continued to be impressed the moment we stepped foot inside the door. The desk attendant was friendly and offered to take our luggage because we were early and it was brought to our room. The fruit in the lobby was wrapped for sanitation purposes as well as a coffee bar that included a Keurig machine with every kind of coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
Our 2nd floor room was very spacious and I immediately noticed that the TV remote control was placed in a sanitizing container alleviating any concerns we might have had if it had been wiped down between uses. The bathroom had sanitizing/disinfecting blue lights installed that when kept on, sanitizes the room! We could tell the owners took great lengths to make sure everything was as clean as possible and maintained properly!
The breakfast was more than we expected with fresh fruit, oatmeal packets, several cereal choices, milk, juice, bagels, bread for toast, etc. and we ate out on the beautiful patio area. The tables were appropriately spaced out and we felt fine dining with other guests nearby.
The rooftop is a wonderful place to watch the sun set and listen to the boats honk their horns after the clock tower chimes 5:00 p,.m. The only drawback is there are no umbrellas up there (for obvious reasons) and it does get a little toasty.
We will definitely be staying again on our next overnight visit to Catalina.

Our recent stay at the Avalon Hotel was just perfect. This is a great location - not too far away from the main shops and restaurants and the hill to walk up is not bad at all.
The interior is amazing Craftsman style woodwork and beautiful! The front desk was able to keep our bag and had it in our room already once the room was available. We stayed in room 201 and what a room! It's the corner room with two sets of patio doors (and two separate decks!). The view is of course amazing. This room also has a double size murphy bed which was great for friends - we didn't even have to share a bed.
I think my favorite part of the room was the bathroom! Very currently renovated (I assume) and SUPER clean. It has a blue ultraviolet light for sanitizing, which is great during these COVID times.
I will say the rooftop deck is the crown jewel. 360 degree view of Avalon and it is amazing. The steps are steep if you happen to have bad knees/joints, but it's worth it once you're up there.
There is a continental breakfast in the beautiful garden as well. It's also nearly soundproof - once the patio doors were closed, you don't even hear the golf carts. If you're still digging through reviews, do yourself a favor and just book the Avalon!

The Avalon Hotel is perfect for you and your family to stay in.
They take good care of important details, and the place is so peaceful and quiet for sleeping that we ended up extending our stay one more night.
Bathrooms look brand-new and include a special UV light device very appropriate for our times.
The property very well located, has a beautiful garden for daily breakfast or simply to spare some time with a drink, and a deck in the rooftop with an amazing 360 degrees view over Avalon.
Special thanks to Laurie - who is a fantastic host - to Evelyn, Titaua, Shen, and Rock for all the attention!

Thanks for your kind review and recognizing our special features in response to COVID restrictions. We also outfit each room with a Violetizer sanitization box to sterilize the TV remote with ultraviolet light. As you mention, The Avalon can be a good choice for families, as long as they select one of our rooms (101 or 201) that has an extra Murphy bed. All of our standard rooms come with one Queen or King-size bed with no roll-aways or cots available. Guests with families would be best advised to contact hotel direct before making a reservation. But we are thrilled it was perfect for your family's stay.

We stayed a the Avalon Hotel for a few days in June for our anniversary. We loved the location and it was so clean! Cute Boutique hotel with classic charm.
Beds are super comfy (large king). Our room was a garden view and overlooked the courtyard. We didn't splurge on an ocean view since we were only there a couple nights and knew we would be not spending much time in our room. They also have incorporated an ultra violet light in the restroom to sterilize it when you are not using.
Front Desk staff was so polite and accommodating from the moment we checked in. They even brought us a complimentary bottle of champagne for our anniversary!
They have a nice little continental breakfast each morning and a happy our at the courtyard. Oh and check out the 4th floor roof top. Spectacular views of the town, ocean and hills. You can just grab your drink and chill up there to catch some rays.
I have nothing bad to say about this place other than if you have trouble climbing stairs, since there is no elevator in the hotel. We didn't mind it as I got my steps in every day!
Thank you for a lovely getaway!

After spending hours researching hotels on Catalina, I reserved a room with a balcony and partial ocean view at the Avalon. We were traveling for our 35th Anniversary, and I wanted a unique inn, with an intimate old-world appeal and to be able to sit outside our room and enjoy the beauty of the harbor. The Avalon delivered. The innkeepers called in advance to check on our arrival time and explained the taxi service voucher system. Upon arrival they welcomed us, wished Happy Anniversary and asked us to select a bottle of wine from their list. They showed us to our room, showed us the features and even had a beach bag packed with towels and beach chairs with carry straps, drink holders and headrests clean and ready to go on our balcony. The hotel has beautiful woodwork, nice details and a very spacious bathrooms, nice products ( including a lovely body scrub). The innkeepers shared a wealth of knowledge on restaurants, places to go, best times to go and where to set up camp on the beach away from the hordes of people ( turns out right at the bottom of the street!). Breakfast was a good continental with a good selection. Be certain to take a bottle of wine up to the rooftop to enjoy the best view of the harbor and the town. We were drawn back every evening and found it magical. We met some lovely fellow travelers who shared their recommendations on best things to do on the island as well. Just a few steps off the Main Street, this yellow beautydoesn’t disappoint.

The Avalon is a clean, quaint and quiet boutique hotel located just off the main beachfront of downtown Avalon. The location provides quick access to downtown but avoids the direct noise and congestion. Friendly hotel staff. Only opportunity for improvement was breakfast, with food that could live more up to the caliber and price of the property. Overall, a very good stay and would recommend it.

Visiting Catalina Island has long been on my bucket list, and our trip this past January FAR exceeded my expectations. We didn't realize it was "off" season, and although many (most) of the restaurants were closed, we ate well enjoying delicious seafood and discovered that we preferred the quiet atmosphere with less crowds. Our stay at the Avalon Hotel could not have been better in room 302. It has a balcony with a harbor view (side street, not directly facing) and two chairs to enjoy it from. The room itself was very nice, with a comfortable bed, mini-fridge and microwave, and a nice clean bathroom with tub/shower combo and all the essentials you might need. They also included high-end wine glasses, bottle opener, and a few novels on the shelves for quiet time on the balcony. We purchased a bottle of wine from the front desk (priced very reasonable) and enjoyed it on the roof top deck in the sunshine watching the cruise ship leave the harbor.

We Stayed for two nights at the Avalon Hotel and would rank it as one of the best hotel experiences we ever had. The entire facility was extremely clean and quiet. The king bed had a memory foam mattress that was the most comfortable bed. Our room had an ocean view with a semi-private balcony.
There was evening wine and cheese in the garden area that is equipped with a fire pit. Breakfast featured lots of choices including fresh fruit, pastries and eggs.
The rooftop area is very nice area and has a 360 degree view of the entire area.
Kathleen and Rock as well as the rest of the staff treated us like we were their only guests.

When we were there in August, 2021, they certainly did not require masks for staff and guests even though they were covered by the LA County mask mandate. We wore masks in all the common areas, but not all guests and staff did. Other businesses in Avalon had very good mask compliance.
The places where bus and boat tours originate should have some experience with guests who bring these mobility scooters and temporarily storing them during your excursion. Check with those vendors directly like the Catalina Island Co. or The Catalina Island Conservancy or Catalina Adventure Tours.
I'm afraid our hotel would not be much of a resource since we are 17 steps up from street level just up to our lobby.
Wish you the best in planning your day trip.
Yes, pretty close. The Casino Dive Park is a favorite dive spot. There are dive boats that leave from here as well. There are currently two dive shops. Catalina Divers Supply (CDS) and Scuba Luv. CDS services the Dive Park with a location to fill tanks, check days and times as they vary seasonally. There is also a small Scuba Diving History Museum located in the Casino Building by the dive park.
Give us a call, 310-510-7070, and we can check to see if you have stayed with us in the past. Talk to you then. Thanks!
Sorry, I didn't see your question until today Arlene. There are a few people that live in town with mobility assistant devices. Some of Avalon narrow and steep streets do present issues for some people. We have been able to accommodate some limited mobility clients through the hotels secondary access. Either our manager or us as owners, need to speak with you directly to explain our limitations and what barriers we have been able to eliminate to see if we can fit your needs. There are a few hotels in town that are fully accessible for mobility access on the ground floor. I suggest looking at the Catalina Chamber for all properties in Avalon. The Catalina Island Inn has some newly remodeled first floor rooms, Catalina Canyon Hotel, a Holiday Inn property has accessible rooms, Pavilion Lodge, Hotel Metropole and Seaport Village Inn are a few others that I believe are good places to look and many of these have elevators. Again, we are happy to speak with you about our ability to accommodate your needs.
