Fort Barli stands as a beacon of historical charm and royal luxury, receiving consistent praise for its atmospheric blend of authenticity and tranquility. Nestled conveniently between Jaipur & Jodhpur, the hotel offers travelers a serene village retreat with beautifully adorned rooms that exude a bygone era's splendor. While some guests consider certain activities to be on the pricier side, the impeccable cleanliness, commendable service, and unique cultural experiences provided by the attentive staff are frequently celebrated. However, a desire for improved spa amenities has been noted by some visitors.

This is more of a family home converted to small boutique hotel. Run by 2 brothers, direct descendants of the builder of the fort and the 17th generation of their family to live here there is genuine history here. The pride in the history is reflected in the care taken by the brothers to ensure guests have an enjoyable and restful stay.

The conversion to hotel has been effected with minimal alterations to the structure of the hotel which does mean some awkward approaches to rooms.

Our room, was huge with multiple areas and a modern bathroom with a large walk in shower.

It's location is rural, very much off the beaten track. Whether you consider that a positive or negative is a matter for your own mindset; one thing's for sure though, you wont be going out anywhere for dinner.

The pool area is lovely and the grounds are beautifully presented. Staff are attentive.

One thing to vote is Wifi doesn't work in rooms, only really in reception. When you see the thickness of the walls you ll understand why.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay in a charming heritage property.

What a treasure! Fort Barli is a real find. Beautifully and sympathetically renovated, this fort surveys the rural village of Barli. Run by fourteenth or seventeenth (can’t remember precisely) generation descendants, they have created harmony both within the fort and in their relationship with the tranquil village.
The rooms are sensitively decorated and furnished to create a feel of a bygone era. A tour of the fort reveals much of its fascinating history and some astonishingly beautiful rooms and artworks.
There’s a campfire in the early evening where you can take a drink and exchange stories with fellow travellers. This is followed by a delicious dinner which includes some family recipes. Many thanks to Kesar for being such an attentive and helpful host.
There is a growing repertoire of activities on offer. We wished we could have stayed longer to take advantage of these and to learn more about life in the village.
A great place to visit, to rest, to explore the quieter side of India.

Fort Barli is an old fort converted to a hotel still lived in and run by the family. The rooms and hotel spaces are beautiful, and some very old and lovely wall painting/tiling/marble, but also modern fixtures and fittings in keeping with the building. You are very aware of the history, and a privilege to stay and to learn about it from the current family, who make you very welcome.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a good place to break up the long journey from Jodphur to Ranthanborne. However there really wasn’t anything to do and one night would have been plenty. We asked to do the bird watching tour but were told we would only see pigeons so not worth doing ... we opted for the local bullock cart ride instead but it was wholly disappointing. Having already been in India for a week there was nothing new to see in this place.

The food was excellent - well dinner was! Great buffet in the evening. Lunch options were poor - I went for the Bombay sandwich which was a toasted cucumber and tomato sandwich - bizarre...

We also really struggled with hot water here. It was one of the noisiest places we stayed on our trip given it was wedding season and there was strange drum / rave music at random intervals through the night.

Building was really nice and tour of the building itself was interesting but it isn’t somewhere you can sit around and relax for a day.

Would recommend as a one night stop over.

If you’re looking to find an historic living fort in the midst of a rural setting, surrounded by village life, a stay at Fort Barli is for you. We stayed in the King’s bedroom and enjoyed a very comfortable bed, seeing the sunrise each morning through the stained glass windows. Outside the chatter of village life and a host of birds greeted each morning. The family and their team made us feel like we were royalty too. Our walk around the village and fields helped us to understand the real India - nameste.

On arrival at Fort Barli we were warmly greeted by all of the staff and given a choice of beautiful suites which were artfully restored ten years ago by the royal family. The whole building drips with authenticity and Rajput history. We chose the Royal suite(who wouldn’t?)which was well equipped and tastefully furnished,a massive room with an exceptional and stylish bathroom.A large cushioned window seat allowed us to keep an eye on the fortified main gate and chat with the visiting parakeets. Many other birds enjoy the battlements not to mention the endless parade of peacocks. The owners were away so we had the whole fort to explore. It is large and sprawling with staircases, courtyards and arched windows with views across the village, the lake and countryside beyond.
The food was delicious and plentiful with offers of tea and snacks at all times. We ate in the delightful area just outside our room and sometimes in the majestic dining room attentively served by the charming and effervescent Kesar.
Apart from the fabulous fort and surroundings,Kesar was a real highlight of our stay.He could not have been a kinder host, thinking of our every need, discreet but always available. We really enjoyed his company.Kesar and his colleagues really made our short stay at Fort Barli magical………..

We drove and drove and drove. We bounced and laughed. Where were we going and then! We were at Fort Bali. It was just lovely. Beautiful tile work, museum type artifacts around and so relaxing. Great stay! Our room was covered in tiles with a porch outside we could just sit and relax. Small pool to cool off and a great sunset. Lovely manager and great dog. We enjoyed her company.

We stayed at Fort Barli during our Honeymoon as a rural break between Jaipur and Udaipur. What a unique and unforgettable experience. We were very humbled by the generosity and hospitality provided by out hosts who upgraded us in recognition of our recent marriage. The room was sumptuous, a real chance to experience how Indian royalty lived in this 350 year old property. The outside spaces are just as stunning with the chance to just sit and lookout over the surrounding countryside listening to peacocks and parakeets.
The home cooked food was delicious and so fresh you just knew it was doing your body some good. The young gentleman who looked after us during our meals was a real pleasure to converse with.
We took a tour around the village with a team member from the Fort who never failed to make us laugh with his cheeky smile, we even got to meet his best friend the village carpenter! The locals were so friendly and curious to meet foreign visitors which was truly a heart warming experience.
We will never forget being gently woken every morning by a flute player in the courtyard, the excitable attention from the family dog Blue and the humbling kindness of our hosts.

Stayed for a family trip. Friendly and delightful staff always happy to help and give advice when asked. Very personal service. It is a quiet place off the beaten track but there are massages, bird watching (amusingly called birding) bullock cart rides and the free tour of the fort by a family member. The brothers who run it are lovely guys who are so hospitable. Great for a few days of peace and quiet.

A really beautiful place to stay. The family who own and run the Fort have done an incredible job, each room/suite decorated to a high standard and simple but delicious food. I’d definitely recommend the Ox-cart ride through the village. If you’re on a busy travel schedule this is the perfect place to take a couple of days “chill time”

As above I didn’t need to cancel so can’t comment. But I would say that the owners are very approachable and reasonable so I would imagine it would depend upon circumstances.

From memory, all the rooms were different. Ours had a bath, I think we were given a suite where a child and nanny slept. I am sure the owner will be able to help you when you book, he was very helpful.
Answer from Vanessa60_12
Berri, Australia97 contributions29 helpful votes
I think it is a great place to explore and be by yourself in. You will be well looked after and also enjoy it there, but can be taken out and explore the village if you want to. It is a lovely place. Just a shame you can't book another night. My main concern for your short stay is that road conditions are not great. It just may take a lot longer to get there than you think. Try and stay another night if you can. You won't regret it. Have you checked out Castle Bera? Perfect next place.
