With its historic monuments, cultural events, charming streets, thermal baths, fine wines and scenic hiking routes, Pécs is understandably one of Hungary’s leading tourist destinations – and Palatinus Grand Hotel is among its most beautiful buildings! Entering the grand lobby is like stepping into a different era, and Art-Nouveau masterpieces like the stunning ballroom – where Béla Bartók once performed – continue to enchant guests to this day. The hotel is also an excellent base for exploring, located just off the main square in the historic old town, and next door to shops and restaurants.

The location of the hotel is perfect: you will find yourself on the promenade, from where all the sights of Pécs are easily accessible. The staff are friendly and helpful; when we wanted to go up to the otherwise closed roof terrace to look around, they opened it immediately.

It's strange that the room has a total of two sockets at floor level, in not very convenient places. They are more for vacuuming than for charging mobile phones. However, the staff said that the hotel will be renovated next year, so I guess they will fix this problem.

This is a beautiful grand old hotel first opened in 1915, the public areas display the beautiful and extravagant secessionist architecture of the age at its best – a kind of romantic, medieval imagination, especially in the dining room and the hall. Like almost everything else worth seeing in Hungary, the hotel was built in the glory days of the Austro-Hungarian empire, those 50 years from 1876 to 1918 when the country was still well governed and an amazing amount of development took place in just a few decades. The hotel is in an excellent position, right in the heart of the beautiful old city of Pecs. Unfortunately, the rooms are a slightly different category – generally adequate, but somewhat worn and in need of maintenance and refurbishment. Some rooms have air conditioning, most have a refrigerator, but there are recurring maintenance issues. In our room the TV was a very old vintage, and did not work, until we discovered that the aerial is broken. The remote control needed new batteries. The basin was somewhat (but not completely) blocked. The furniture was worn, but serviceable. The beds were good and we slept well. Overall, it is a reasonable 3* hotel, with fantastic public areas – well worth staying here just for the ambience and the atmosphere. The rooms on the higher floors are a bit more basic, and thos on the lower floors might be affected by noise when there is a function.

The hotel is somewhat overrated, it looks beautiful from the outside and it is at an excellent location but pretty much that is all on the positive side. The rooms are old, the tap was dripping and the wellness did not work, although it should have been open from 10 am to 6 pm, no one was there. When I called reception it took them over half an hour to reach the person running the wellness and the answer was that "unfortunately today we are not open". I was on a business trip and booked the hotel as it has wellness facilities, if I had known it that it did not work, I would not have booked a room here...

Dear Guest, thank you for your review and for choosing our hotel. We are sorry to hear that you were not fully satisfied with our service. According to our plans, the renovation of the hotel will start next year, during which, among other things, larger and more modern rooms will be created. We apologize for the inconveniences because of the operation of the wellness area. The wellness is operated by an external company, so we will investigate the case and will take the necessary steps, as this is unacceptable. I hope we will still have the opportunity to welcome you in a comfortable, renovated room in the future, despite the inconveniences, so please contact us before your next stay, so we can compensate you somehow.

We have stayed here several times over the years and keep coming back. The rooms are small and beds hard but the history and setting are great. The 2 things that bring us back are the breakfast/dining room and location. If you want to experience the Pecs old city, this is the place to stay.
I am excited to see what they are doing next door. They are redoing a building to create a boutique hotel with more modern rooms. Maybe for our next stay.

If you're looking to spend a night or two in a Grand Hotel from a bygone era, this amazing hotel will show you what it was like in the days of old. The Grand staircase, the beautiful mosaics and porcelain from Zsolnay at its heyday with the service as if you were in the movie "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Don't look for the modern luxury of the Marriott BonVoy Elite upgrades, but, with the right mindset, you will appreciate a different era's luxury. I personally welcomed the infrequent breaks of cookie-cutter hotels.

Fantastic position very friendly service. Unfortunately the hotel inside is very dated. We had a suit. The fridge was empty in the bathroom no toiletteries no tissue anywhere. Very old furniture carpet and curtons. Absolute no value for money. Parking extra .
Pécs city is very beautiful lots of history. We enjoyed our time there.

According to our plans, the renovation of the hotel will start next year, during which, among other things, larger and more modern rooms will be created. The hotel will be 4 star category after the renovation, so we will provide all the services which are not mandatory in a 3 star category hotel, however upon request we can provide you toilettries and we can fill up the minibar and we inform our guests about this opportunity. We are really sorry that you had not the best impression of our hotel, but we are happy that you were satisfied with our staff. I hope you will return after the renovation and we will have the opportunity to welcome you in a comfortable, renovated room in the future.

Art Nouveau hotel on a main pedestrian street with dozens of bars and restaurants nearby. Located in heart of the city a few blocks from Szechenyi Square and within walking distance of all major attractions. Over 100 years of history as one of the fanciest hotels in Pecs. Renovated in 1976-88. Nice large room and great breakfast buffet.

Patinated hotel with a quaint retro atmosphere in the heart of the city. The staff is kind and friendly, however, the glorious light of the rooms has worn out, begging for renovation. The mini-bar was empty, there was a small selection of television channels, not even a Bible to be found, and the trash was fermenting in the bathroom bin. Sorely disappointing, and you can merely find a better-value hotel in the close area.

I recently attended a wedding party held in the Palatinus Hotel on Kiraly U. in Pecs, Hungary. It is a lovingly restored old building in the art noveau style with magnificent Zsolnay porcelain inlay, stained glass, and curvy iron grillwork. The 6 course meal we had was a gourmet's delight of Hungarian specialities, the service impeccable and the gypsy music was very special. We did not stay there, but the room prices are very reasonable, too. It is a real jewel in the wonderful small city of Pecs, Hungary.

Despite this hotel's high ratings and beautiful exterior, I would definitely suggest to steer clear of the Palatinus in Pecs. My boyfriend and I booked one night at this hotel and were greatly disappointed.

As we walked through the hotel courtyard, we were quite excited to check into this hotel as it looked very nice. The lobby as well is decorated nicely and looks very grand. Unfortunately, we were greeted by a very rude staff member named Zoltan who couldn't find our reservation. It seemed like we were a big inconvenience to him.

I am a travel blogger and despite being in touch with the Pecs Tourist Info Centre about receiving a "Pecs Card" on arrival, Zoltan told me that I didn't book the correct room and I needed to have a special package in order to use the card.

I said not to worry about it and as I walked away, he called me back and said that he would give me the card. He started muttering under his breath in Hungarian and gave me a battered up used card with the information papers in Hungarian.

I shrugged it off and walked into the elevator that looked straight out of the latest American Horror Story show. We arrived at the third floor and opened the door to a room that appeared to of been last updated in 1960. The walls were stained and scratched. The floor did not appear to be vacuumed. The beds were quite uncomfortable. The worst of all was the bathroom that looks like my grandmother's apartment in Bratislava.

To be honest, we were excited to leave this place.

Although I have to say that the breakfast was very good!
