We had a four night break here in Studio 1. Wonderful and much needed time away. Owners Sarah & Andrew were very accomodating. Beautiful views across the bay. Lots of time spent out on the deck enjoy the sunsets. We were luck to have generally sunny weather which was lovely to wake up to.

The property is set directly behind where the ferry docks. A close but very steep walk up a dirt road about ten minutes.

The town centre of Oneroa is about a 15/20 min walk away but that’s all relative. There’s a couple of ways to get there. Either uphill on the main road or via a couple of different walking tracks which we loved. Part of being in NZ is to enjoy the outdoors so the walk wasn’t a big deal to us. One tip would be, get whatever supplies you want during business hours as a lot is closed afterwards. We hired a car ($69) from the ferry terminal one of the days to check the island out.

Re wineries…most are closed Mon-Wed. Wineries though like Cable Bay & Passage Rock we’re open 7 days.

A great break, we’ll be back!

As one can see in the photos, the view is amazing. It's up on a hill so the only sound you hear basically is wildlife. We stayed here for one night and while it is located close to the ferry, we had a hard time finding a cab that would take us here for the reason that it's very close. We thought about walking but the hill is quite steep, we were jet-lagged, and had heavy luggage. We ended up finding someone to bring us up and I think he charged us $5 which wasn't bad at all.

The room was spacious and comfortable. If you open the windows and doors, a lovely breeze passes through, which also provided for wonderful ventilation when we cooked dinner that night. There is no stovetop so cooking on portable ones was a new experience for us but it worked just fine.

One thing I would like to see change is the water pressure of the shower. It was a trickle so shower-time was not pleasant but basic shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided, and like many NZ accommodations, there's a towel warmer. It wasn't necessary during the summer, but I can imagine how cold it could get in that bathroom (don't worry, there's a heater in there, too).

Overall, it's a nice place to stay but if we were to return to Waiheke Island, I would look into staying somewhere else.

Beautiful seclued position with magnificent views over MeTiaTia Bay - gorgeous!
Such a comfy bed with a view of the large bay below and Auckland city in the background - stunning day & night.
Lovely 1 of only 2 studios with small kitchen facilites, bathroom , heated towel rail, access to a herb garden, car parking with private & secure access.
Would be BEST if you have a car. Eventhough there are many lovely walks on the island it will be much easier for coming to & from and after a big day or walks, swimming, eating etc. Dining, wineries etc would definitely feel more comfortable getting to & from if you have a car & not only for this accomodation but getting to see a lot more of the island.
Owners live next door but this is not a problem and although we only met 1 - they were absolutely delightful. We were also greeted by their 2 "poodly cross" style dogs - who were soooo gorgeous and friendly!!
My husband & I loved our 2 night stay here.
Thank you so so much!!
Hope this helps everyone

We stayed at Studio 2 of The Moorings just after Christmas 2018.

The studio is smart and clean, with all the amenities you would expect (wi-fi, kettle, toaster, grill, microwave, heat pump etc).

We were nicely greeted on arrival by the owner's daughter and Rocky the Labrador, who showed us to our room and explained all the details.

The view from the room and deck is absolutely superb, looking out over the harbor, Rangitoto volcano and the city in the distance. We had some amazing sunsets sitting on the deck. Though I would advise mosquito repellent if you sit out on the deck after dark.

The deck is fairly private, and there is a nice shared garden with the other studio that has a BBQ and outside eating area.

The town is a fairly easy 20 minute walk away, or you can get a bus from the ferry terminal. The town is fairly small, but has some nice restaurants, bars and shops.

When we left, Andrew the owner was very nice, and gave us a lift down to the ferry. That was very appreciated, Thank you very much.

Would highly recommend, and will definitely hope to stay here again.

Usually when in Auckland we spend it all at my brother and SIL’s place but this time I really wanted to show (Aussie) husband that it’s not all just boring architecture, queues and terrible traffic so booked us 3 nights here. Flipping awesome stay! Adding my 2 cents about THAT VIEW, does anyone ever get sick of it? Just read a few other reviews and now making sense why Andrew sent us such detailed instructions on getting here and also a plug-in mosquito zapper lol. Things I loved:
• THE VIEW. Rain or shine it’s an absolute stunner. I spent 15 min watching one of the ferries coming in, it’s like being hypnotised
• The glass balcony doors have little hooks so they don’t slam in the wind –clever
• Very spacious. Husband and I kind of overdid the wineries on Day 1 and spent the second day laying low and pottering about in the apartment in the morning, so cosy. Plenty of books/magazines if you also end up a bit dusty from the overabundance of wineries.
• Was just reading about the lack of permanent stovetop, hah we didn’t’ even notice b’c too many delicious places to eat out –otherwise we just needed it for breakfast and to create some cheese/tapas platters to eat out on the balcony
• I loved the abundance of plug sockets everywhere…nothing drives me more mental than turning up to a place and finding only one poorly situated plug socket (I know I’m a weirdo). Excellent and consistent free wifi too
Room for improvement (also note as per my husband: I am a fussy princess; also note: the last place we stayed was hotel in Dubai, land of gold plated bathrooms):
• Bathroom is large/well equipped but fairly plain, such a pity b’c it’s in stark contrast to the rest of the apartment. Maybe add a hanging plant or similar to improve on the ‘rugby dressing shed’ chic? Also all the handwashes/dishwashing liquid etc are Ecostore brand ..except for the shampoo/conditioner/shower bodywash. Would suggest keeping all the same for a luxury accommodation? I did LOVE the heated bathroom mirror though
• Also still on the bathroom, would have appreciated a few more hooks in there –on the wall and beside the sink to hang the handtowel
• the roller blind over the balcony glass doors need a wash –mildew accumulating at the bottom. I think a couple of lightbulbs need replacing too
• Tried hunting for a box of tissues and couldn’t find any (this is usually standard issue for most accomodations), must admit though I didn’t email Andrew about this b’c we randomly had a box of our own
• Getting really finicky now but suggest getting a set of matching coat hangers for the wardrobe –only to bring it up to ‘luxury’ standards
Reading this myself, I realise that if that’s all the whinge I’ve got to say about The Moorings it was an absolutely fantastic stay. Andrew met us on arrival (even though had provided excellent instructions on getting in) and when I emailed to request extra manchester, turned up within 2 minutes flat. The location is so convenient, we walked down the driveway back to the ferry terminal and jumped on the next bus into Oneroa –main village 5 min away- (cos all of them go past there) without even looking up how to get anywhere. You can also book Hop On Hop Off Explorer bus tix at the ferry terminal for some vineyard hopping. If you have any issues getting a cab up the driveway, we used WaiCabs for a flat rate of $10. We had such a relaxing and enjoyable stay…and I think I’ve lined up some future bookings from all my Aussie mates judging by how jealous they are of my social media pics! Thank you Andrew …did I mention I will miss the view??

We really enjoyed our stay at The Moorings. The studio room was beautifully appointed. We stay in studio 2 the view was spectacular.

The rooms are very close to the ferry, however, jump in a cab- very big hill to wheel the luggage up. We would definitely stay there again.

On the sunny, cool evening we arrived, we were stunned by the views fro the balcony and felt we had found our little bit of heaven!
Sadly however, the interior of the Studio lacks the wow factor of the view. Carpets are stained, curtains need a wash, holes in furnishings, a very meagre offering by way of a kitchenette and cooking tools, no dishwasher and a bed that could have been a little more comfortable. Certainly the interior, whilst once may have been nicely furnished, needed some TLC!
The cottage garden, while also needing some work, was pretty and there was a certain magic to the place because of its location up a very steep hill, but overall we felt it lacked love.

A perfect finale to a wonderful three weeks in the Antipodes. We'll not forget the stunning view of the Skytower in a hurry. We felt right at home as the style of The Moorings is similar to our Tresco (in the Scilly Isles) 'bach' and the island is reminiscent of a trip to Martha's Vineyard 20 years ago. Talking of vineyards, we loved our cellar-door lunch at Mudbrick. A delightful place.

Booked Studio Two for a one night stay - a mid-winter weekend getaway. The Moorings really exceeded my expectations.
After making the booking on Booking.Com, I was promptly emailed with information and tips about our stay.
The Moorings is up a very very steep, long, gravel driveway - We brought our car over on the car ferry so it was no problem, if on foot I would recommend booking a cab for the one minute trip up the hill from the ferry building. Do not let this put you off!
Upon arrival at 2pm (check in time) the studio was spotlessly clean. It has a beautiful white gabled ceiling, and lovely big french doors that open out onto a little deck with a small table and phenomenal views over the bay.
The firm but comfy bed isn't massive but is big enough (I think it was a queen).
The bathroom is modern and soap / shampoo / conditioner / lotion are provided.
The free wifi worked well, which was a nice surprise.
Theres a kitchenette with everything you might need, including microwave, little benchtop oven, crockery, tea, coffee, etc.
We hired a DVD from Video Ezy in Oneroa and watched it in our room without a hitch.
Check in / check out was painless - No hassle at all.
The ONLY little thing that was missing was bathrobes to wear.
Will recommend The Moorings to all my friends and family - We highly enjoyed our stay, and you seriously can't beat these views!!
