This was our second stay at Roxburghe and it really is a special place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The accommodation, service and restaurant are all excellent and deserve our 5 star rating. We played the course twice both great challenging rounds and also played Goswick Links near Berwick which again was excellent. Overall we had a great few days and next year it will be even better when the spa opens so we will be back

Lovely location and ambience. Quick check in, Ben helped us with luggage and even came out to the car park with an umbrella to assist after we had parked up. Our beautifully decorated deluxe room (11) was large and well kitted out but unfortunately with a narrow view of the building site behind and overlooking a generator and what appeared to be building debris. Our friends view from the front was far superior for a lesser room type. However, our main gripe was the layout of the newly fitted bathroom. The shower dominated the room and the unnecessary expanse of shower glass screens made the bathroom unpractical. The makeup mirror was unusable and the bathroom mirror was poorly positioned. The outward opening shower door caught on the bath mat and the whole experience was of good quality equipment fitted to a poor design layout. Such a shame. Another minor gripe was the room mirror didn’t have a plug socket nearby, this coupled with a coiled hairdryer lead made hair drying unnecessarily difficult. Restaurant food and service was very good.

Took son to practice facilities at golf course. Went to pro shop to get our tokens for ball machine. Driving range is quite far away from clubhouse and a muddy walk through woods. After hitting a basket each went to get a other basket and only got a few balls out machine. Son made the long walk back to clubhouse were he was told to just walk out onto driving range and pick some balls up. No offer of another token or our money back. Not really the service you would expect from a championship golf course🤔🤔. Signposts for short game area, still never found it. Great golf course but practice facilities really let's it down.

Had afternoon tea here to celebrate my birthday. Not sure how they knew, I must have mentioned it but they bought out a plate with 'Happy Birthday' on it written in chocolate sauce and 3 strawberries - yum thank you. We sat in a lovely rom in the window area and was served a delicious afternoon tea with lots of tasty little pretty cakes like it should have! The sandwiches were lovely and there was a selection of other savoury bites. Very welcome. The Butternut Squash Felloute (no idea how to spell it sorry!) was utterly amazing. The scones were made fresh on arrival. It was all gorgeous. I only have 1 comment to improve this - we would have preferred a proper table to sit at so we didn't have to keep bending down to the coffee table. That's just a personal choice though. All in all it was fantastic.

It was my 60th birthday meal. We live in Roxburgh itself - I am a member of the golf club - so didn’t stay overnight. The meal was superb. Easily one of the best I’ve had in my 60 years, and my wife in her lower number! It was well paced, beautifully cooked, while the young staff were both friendly and attentive. They were knowledgeable about both the food and the drink and able to share a joke when appropriate. With so much expansion and change going on at the hotel, it augers well for the future.

This is a place we go to twice a year and we have normally been happy with our experience, despite the expense. This time we were disappointed. The arrangements for both dining and sleeping were found to be wrong, despite reassurances at booking, when we checked in and the receptionist trivialised it. £368 B and B is not cheap . You should be able to expect better.

This is our second visit in a year. Last year we had a family stay at the hotel and all got rooms in the main building. However service was ridiculously slow but at that time, we put it down to coming out of lockdown and hotels struggling to get the right levels of staff. When we were looking to have a two night stay, we thought that we would give the Roxburghe another try. We had booked two rooms and on arrival, were shown to rooms in the Courtyard which was not expected. I will say that the rooms are lovely and look to be freshly decorated and bathrooms are beautiful. We requested baths however were told that only two rooms in the hotel actually have baths and these are the suites, so no joy there. Our rooms were a standard size with a good size bed and beautifully decorated. They are very warm though [we had windows opened all day however the Courtyard gets little breeze, so did not cool the room down]. I would suggest asking for fans in the room during the warmer days which may help. Internet access is good and the rooms have coffee making facilities and biscuits. Also, if you stay on a Sunday night, note that the bins seem to be kept beside the Courtyard so you will be woken just before 8am with the bins being cleared if you stay in these rooms. In relation to the main hotel, we spent some time in the bar and restaurant on both days. The staff are generally very polite however feel that there is a shortage of staff for the number of guests. We were often left alone in the bar and had to wait to request further drinks until a staff member returned during the day. At one point, due to the good weather, we considered sitting out in the garden for our drinks, however there were only two tables that were both taken. Although there is building work happening near there, there is still a lot of room to have more tables so surprised there were not more out. We ate in the main restaurant on the first night which was only about half full, but I did see the bar area busy with people eating. In the main restaurant, the food was really good but could have included more options on both the A La Carte menu and the Table D'Hote [£45 for 3 courses]. Service was very slow however so no improvement on when we were there last year. The staff seemed to move between the main restaurant and the bar, so they were not allocated to a room which slowed the process. At any other hotel of this level, we would expect a maitre de managing the whole process and staffing. If the Roxburghe does have one, they did not appear in the restaurant at all while we were there. In relation to the wine list, unfortunately the two wine options we chose on the first night were not available so we had to go a third option. Also, first time that we have been served prosecco in wine glasses [not sure if this was down to a lack of training or the glasses were being washed]. On the second night we decided to eat in the bar. This time we ate off the bar menu so a mix of fish & chips, burgers, etc. The service did seem to be a bit faster when eating in the bar which was good. The hotel does seem to have an issue with flies, although no issue in the Courtyard. When eating dinner and breakfast, we spent a considerable amount of time swatting flies away from our food and drinks [ended up putting a small plate over the glasses to stop them]. In particular, there appears to be a large number of flies collecting at the top window beside the bar so not sure if there is an issue here that need to be resolved. To top it all, on the last morning my daughter choose the pancakes for breakfast. When nearing the end of the pancakes, she noticed a black bit in one of the pancakes. After some close investigation, there was a whole (cooked) fly in the pancake, after which she made a quick retreat to the bathroom to be sick. Not the best end to a weekend away. All in all, it is great to see the work being done around the house and the building itself is lovely. However the service needs improvement and fix the fly issue!

Dear Aztec1309, Thank you for making the time to share the details of your stay with us. I am truly disappointed to read that we have fallen short of our usual standard, and that certain aspects of your stay did not live up to your expectations. While I am happy to read that you enjoyed your stay in the Courtyard rooms, it is clear that more can be done with regards to temperature control in the rooms by way of a fan. Further to your comment on the subject, we have reached out to the waste management company to remind them that waste should not get collected before 9am. Obviously, the Food and Beverage side of your stay was the main source of disappointment. I assure you that all your comments on the subject have been noted, and that I am personally addressing each topic with the relevant person. I am sorry to read that service was slower than usual and that you had the feeling that more staff should be around. While SCHLOSS Roxburghe is not exempt from the challenges the hospitality industry is currently facing, this should not be picked up on by our guests. We have also planned in additional training slots to keep upgrading the team’s knowledge around wines and the proper way to serve them. On the subject of flies, being located in a rural area of the Scottish Borders, it is a true challenge to keep the hotel free of flies, especially when doors and windows are open. From a compliance perspective we are held to highest possible hygiene standards which includes taking every action possible to limit the presence of any type of insects , especially flies. I am painfully aware of the fact that nothing could possibly justify the issue you encountered at breakfast, and I assure you that every action is being taken to make sure we do not face a similar issue in the future. I hope the action taken meets with your approval, and that it to some extent restores your faith in the hotel. I am at your entire disposal to further discuss any queries you may have regarding the steps put in place to correct the different issues you describe, and I invite you to contact me directly with any further questions you may have.

We had stayed and enjoyed our first visit here last November when in the area on family business. A tad on the expensive side but we saw the value. So when more family business called for a one night visit (we are a border family) we went straight to the telephone to get a room rather than shop around.. Shock number 1. We were quoted an much increased price for the same room that we had enjoyed last November. OK we know about Covid hikes and inflation and it was summer and not Autumn but really? Shock number 2. We reverted to our favourite agent and secured the same room for considerably less. Come on folks, where is your business sense? The place was not full, we were only booking 4 days in advance of our planned visit, so why try for the Rack Rate instead of filling a room AND the opportunity of selling us food and drinks? Shock number 3. On arrival the same maintenance was going on that we had witnessed last November. Needs a progress chaser and project manager. The good news. The welcome was as warm and friendly as ever. We were shown up to our room with a very poor view of a courtyard and guessed we had not been given a good view due to it being only for one night. We can live with that. The room was nice, well housekeepered, and comfortable BUT why Oh why do rooms for two people only ever have one easy chair between us? Not specific to Schloss Rox of course but just an observation on a bad plan. Then to Dinner. Service as a bit slow it has to be said. OK. I don't like to be rushed to choose from the comprehensive menu and I cannot order wine until the main dish is chosen but we do like a G&T while choosing. We did get bread s and nibbles too. Shock Number 4. Menu prices have escalated in the seven months since our last visit. Was it Brexit or covid or just world prices?? The crispy Belly Pork was lovely so we move on to the last shock. Number 5. almost fatal. The Wine list. Now come on folks. Don't get silly. I know of and expect all the little wrinkles with wine such as Corkage, mark up and exclusivity of cellars but £40 was the cheapest bottle is outrageous verging on Avarice.. Seeing prices of up to £60 for a modest bottle of Argentinian or Aussie Red made me see red too. I can get this or better for about a tenner from Tony Laithwaite or Mimi Avery and delivered to my door instead of trekking round Tesco or Sainsburys or even Tanners of Shrewsbury. I would not expect mark ups of 300% or more even from up market places in the South of England and certainly not in Roxburghshire. Restaurants can give the wine away and still make a profit on the meal and this is pure greed. It no doubt gives a little frision to pay for an expensive wine for a treat but enough is enough. Or darn well should be. Check out was fine and the wine prices were the last shock of this stay and there will not be many more to come. Come on Bruno. You have great potential here but there are other venues in Kelso.
