Needing to be in surgery with our disabled daughter quite early we chose to stay the night prior.
Everything was outdated and showed obvious signs however the bed was super comfortable, kitchen had everything you need, right across from the westfields so although there was no catering at this hotel you could find meals close by.
Although standard in most hotels we have actually never been charged for the special need of a crib (to secure our 4.5year old safely as she is super tiny and unable to sleep in a regular bed due to disability) this is to purely cater for her disability yet this hotel charged $10 to use in our room.
Parking has also been of a privilege to us in every other accor hotel we have stayed in having always been complimentary, no charge with a genuine understanding of how crazy life is for us with our daughter - something that I greatly appreciate and am humbled by. here we were charged $25.
So on a personal note I was just a little unprepared to all of a sudden need to pay for these options when i emailed prior to arrival and upon booking to notify of our needs as I always do.
With a late check out requested to accomodate our hospital departure times I am happy to say our stay was comfortable once past the initial surprises as mentioned.
The obvious COVID restrictions reduced the use of recreation amenities, As expected.
As a member the usual privileges did not apply, however we were warmly accommodated to the best of the hotels ability, I also understand the impact of COVID 19 and the financial burden upon everyone right now whilst I have mentioned here my shock of requested payment for parking/cot, I did pay for these with little hesitation and are more of a personal expectation from many previous stays.
The staff were very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to help. But the hotel is marketed as premium accommodation which it certainly is not. It is very old and dated and in need of some TLC, the kitchen floor was very old and marked. There were a little child's hand prints on the windows, so the windows definitely hadn't been cleaned before us.
We bought most of our groceries the first day we arrived and went to use the oven the first night, we had our chicken etc ready to cook but the oven would not work, my partner called down to reception, a guy came up to see what was wrong, next morning they got maintenance to try to find out the problem, the oven was so old it was probably old age, it could not be fixed, so we could only use the microwave and stove top.
We were offered another room, but because we were on the 22nd floor and paid more for a premium room up high we turned down the offer of another room down on the 16th floor, the view was not as spectacular as higher up on the 22nd floor, and we didn't want to have to pack up and move again.
We were very impressed with how the staff allowed us to cook our food from our first night, in the room down on the 16th floor, it was greatly appreciated.
I have never stayed anywhere that didn't have a toilet brush or even a dustpan and broom, after a few days with 2 adults, a 9yr old and 13yr old it would have been good to be able to sweep up crumbs etc.
Also the pool deck was being renovated, so there was nowhere to sit, in the 10 days we were there we never saw anyone come to work on the tiles, my girls were really looking forward to going to the pool but we used it about 3 times as it wasn't a place you wanted to be when there was nowhere to sit and watch them.
I would definitely stay in the suburb Chatswood again, easy to get to the CBD, and a great city vibe, I'd just not stay at The Sebel again.
The balcony was filthy from some type of construction or renovation work. There were cigarette butts laying about. There were cement stains on the windows which were, again, filthy.
Curtains in all the rooms were dirty, stained and in the living area torn.
Tried to cook breakfast on our first morning there only to discover that the stove didn't work. Had to wait for someone to fix it. The stove itself had obviously not been cleaned in a very long time.
Clothes dryer did not work. There was no clothes rack or pegs which is standard in most apartments.
All rooms were generally dirty and in dire need of a good clean.
Unable to use the dishwasher because the lid on the compartment that held the dishwasher powder wouldn't close. No dishwashing liquid.
The kettle leaked, wobbled on it's heating plate and generally looked unsafe.
There was hair left behind by previous tenants in both shower recesses.
No tea towels or cleaning cloths in the kitchen. Rang reception and asked if we could get a tea towel. Our request was met with laughter! The tea towel never arrived.
Water pressure in the master shower was very low. Trying to regulate the water temperature whilst having a shower was near impossible. It was either scalding hot or freezing cold.
The room key card did not work at one point and we had to get reception to come up to our room at 11pm to let us into the room.
No Foxtel which is just about standard everywhere else, even in tiny country motels.
Expected to pay for WiFi.
The Sebel used to have a good name but this place is just trashing that reputation! It's blatantly obvious that no one cleans the rooms properly, checks the facilities in the rooms or even cares.
Upon entering the room, it smelt like mould. Curtains and carpet were all mouldy and covered in brown stains. Everything looked old and unkept.
We had booked for three children, but because the second bedroom only had two single bedrooms, we were told while checking in that there was a fold out sofa for our other child. This was no issue. I had written in the notes, twice before arriving, to ask if the bed could be made up. When we got to the room, the sofa bed had not been made up, so we unfolded it to do it ourselves. What we found inside the sofa when we unfolded it was really disappointing. There were co2 chargers (obviously previous guests had been huffing the gas out of them to get high). There were about 6 or 7 of them left inside the sofa lounge, which obviously had not been cleaned at all. (Photo attached).
My husband went down to complain to reception about what we had discovered and he said he’d send a manager up straight away to clean it and make the bed up for my 7 year old son. In lieu of what had happened, he offered us a complimentary sparking water. Bizarre.
Anyway, awful experience. Dirty, run down, smelly, and an all round gross place to stay.
We have stayed in so many hotels all around the world, and I must say I’ve never gone to the effort to leave a review on trip advisor before. This is by far the worst place we’ve ever had to stay. We thought about checking out but it was too late to drag our three children out again at dinner time.
It is definitely not 4 star. A caravan would have been a nicer experience.
It also provided the option to pay more for breakfast being included. When we checked in, we were offered a paper bag with some cereal as the breakfast. I said no, that's not what a reasonable person expects from an included breakfast at a hotel. Even if it was what they did usually, this should be very clearly stated in the website so you can make an educated decision about whether to pay extra for it. I did not accept the bag, and requested a partial refund of the extra cost I had paid. The manager on duty said he understood and I did not take possession of the bag at any time. He said he would chase up my request for the refund of the breakfast, but after reminding him as I checked out, and after sending an email requesting this to the hotel manager, I have heard nothing.
The room itself was tidy and comfortable. We had a two bedroom apartment. Apparently there was a pool, but no information was provided at any time about this. I found it on level 7, but we did not use it. I believe there should have been a gym somewhere, based on the advertising, but I have no idea where this might have been. Again, absolutely no facilities information was provided to us - nothing in the room, and no information communicated on check-in.
No cleaning materials supplied such as a broom, toilet brush, dustpan and shovel, so you cannot easily tidy up after yourself, and there is no housekeeping supplied (we were not there for a full week, I believe it occurs after that). One used toilet roll was available, and we had to go and request more to last us through the visit. A single bin liner was provided in the bin, so we had to ask for more of those as well, so that we could actually keep our room cleaned. We did not use the oven, and the area around the stovetop was quite greasy.
Minor complaints regarding cleanliness, dissatisfaction with misrepresentation of the booking, but overall, a very good location and room. I will be much happier when they refund me the extra amount I paid, but I have also requested they update the website listing so more people are not misled into ordering something that is not what they expected. There is pretty much no service provided at all, and this is not a 4 1/2 star hotel. I would suggest it should be updated to a 2 star hotel. Honestly, it does not exceed above-average accommodation needs, it does not actually meet them. It really is a budget and comfortable accommodation that meets purpose, but there is no service at all.
We were in room 1302. First thing we noticed was that there were no knobs on the oven, we told reception and they came and looked and said there would be a guy to look at it tomorrow but they never came. They offered us to cook in another room and now I read other reviews and see this must be a common problem at Sebel.
The kitchen and bathrooms were not clean and there was hair on the floors. Only three dinner plates for a family of four. Only one saucepan no fry pan. No tea towel, broom or vacuum and now they only clean once a week for long stay. We were there for six nights and not one clean or top up of essential items such as toilet paper and soap, which was empty as they are refillable pumps.
Carpet and furniture was dirty, windows unclean and a dining chair was broken.
The pool heater was not working and there were tiles lifted up in the pool area and cordoned off.
All the staff were polite and helpful apart from the gentleman who checked us in, who made a couple of inappropriate jokingly comments to me when I questioned the charge of something which was very embarrassing for me in front of other guests.
For the price the Sebel is definitely not value for money and we will not stay there again.
The exterior refurbishment work was NOT made know to us when we booked, or anytime afterwards, if it had been we would’ve looked elsewhere.
Although the apartment itself was very comfortable I’m extremely disappointed with the no access to the balcony and very limited pool space. It certainly was not worth the money we paid for not having these!!
