Historic, charming, friendly and comfortable. Amazing staff (shout out to Virginia!) always smiling and full of advice for traveling in the area - we were told of the Kauri Coast as an alternative to traveling back to Auckland - wow, so worth the extra time! We stayed 3 nights in a water view room (continental breakfast is included in the... More

Stayed 2 days over NYE. Beautiful historic hotel, absolutely stunning views across the bay. Couldn't have asked for a better room, room 5, double windows over the bay, sleeping to sound of the sea. Bar and terrace area also really picturesque but a real scrum as soon as the sun comes out which can be frustrating as a resident not... More

We spent 2 comfortable nights in a waterview room. Nicely appointed rooms, tasty, ample breakfast and location is fabulous - a very short walk from ferry and right in the midst of all historic Russell has to offer. Its own history plus photos in the dining rooms was interesting. We immersed ourselves in the fascinating history through walks (brochure available... More

Yes - well worth the drive from Auckland, The Duke is a lovely 'colonial' building that reminds me of the club houses at Bisley, England, so I felt very at home, and being right on the waterfront we were able to enjoy our dinner on the verandah and watch the sun go down over the bay. Food, service and room... More

We drove to Paihia and were disappointed but remembered a friend had said that Russel was good so we went over on the ferry, The ferry ride was fantastic and everything followed in that vane there after! Russel is a lovely laid back place and the Duke of Marlborough Hotel is a good member of that community, we had a... More

We spent 5 lovely nights at the Duke of Marlborough at the end of November. It was a real gem, with lots of character, great food and a comfortable bed. Being close to the pier with all the boat trips and ferries, and just with such a beautiful outlook was perfect. We loved the old hotel, the service was great,... More

Stayed a night here on our "family-moon", after our wedding in Hokianga. The rooms are very nice, fresh and clean, and stunning waterfront view from our Waterfront Room. Great service, friendly staff and food is to die for. A great experience - Highly recommend!

Fantastic room with loads of space - the bathroom was bigger than a single in most places I've stayed. The bedding was top quality and the little balcony was a perfect spot for a glass of rose in the sun. A lot's already been said of the food but it really is top notch with a beautiful back-drop. I'd definitely... More

We reside at a beach near Melbourne and have a house in Russell. After 30 years of sailing to the Bay of Islands on our various yachts, we finally found the house of our dreams there. However, it's tenanted, and we're not quite time for retirement yet, so The Duke is our choice of accommodation upon every trip to N.Z.... More
