The hotel is fantastic! Originally built in 1897 with oodles of character. Outstanding food offering, the 21 day aged rib eye is not to be missed. If you're after a bit of an old world experience, Cynthia and her local patrons do not fail to deliver. Great fun experience.

Pros - great chef, food delicious, would recommend stopping here for dinner. Cons - everything else. The website does not note that none of the rooms are en suite. This hotel is more like a hostel or backpackers. I would not recommend this place for anyone to stay overnight. If you do it's best suited to males only. There are...

This place makes no effort to be something it's not. The rooms are small and very low standard. We had no bedside lights and it was not possible to lock the rooms from outside. To get to the rather uncharming bathroom, one had to walk through a hallway with a floor mat that was anything but new. Laughter and smalltalk...

A wonderful pub with good hearty food. Friendly staff. This is a pub where you literally feel like you have stepped back in time. Busy with locals and tourists at the time of our visit, a truly memorable experience.

A group of us detoured especially to stop here for afternoon tea. The reception we received when we arrived was decidedly cool and when we placed our orders at the bar we got the feeling we were a bit of an inconvenience. Our efforts to engage the proprietors in conversation resulted in a strange mix of engagement and sarcasm. We...

Blackball is a small town in the midst of the west coast mining community. It has suffered its unfair share of tragedies and we wanted to support this community and experience a real small town NZ pub/hotel. The Hilton rooms are 1950s style and could do with a bit of updating, the food is 1980s style nothing wrong with it...

You do not want to miss staying here if you want to experience a piece of true New Zealand. We had such a great time talking with the owners and their family. The feel and ambiance are similar to McMenamins establishments in the US WA/OR area, only this is the real deal.

A wonderful place where you can have a great meal ! Interesting atmosphere given the history of the hotel and the related history of the mining industry. The owners are very friendly and willing to tell you all about their hotel and to give you advice where to go next. A must go, when you are in this area !!

Ultimately had a good time and good to visit this iconic pub.....found it strange that the whole reason the Pub made a name for itself was covered up by a map. Owners were a bit sarcastic as I suppose they get answered the same questions regularly, but I'm sure that's life as a Publican.

My sister and I loved staying at Formerly The Blackball Hilton. It felt more like staying with old friends than staying at a Hotel run by people we had never met before. We were welcomed with open arms, we had a great time playing cards with the locals, the meals were very tasty, I had Veal the first night and...
