Our family enjoyed one of their catered winter lunches and spent a couple of hours at the property being shown around the various accommodations and gardens. The hosts are welcoming and relaxed and seemed happy to spend time with us answering questions, without encroaching on our family time. The cable car access across the river is a wonderful thing too.... More

What a great place! From the moment you step foot in the flying fox you know you're in for an experience. Kelly and Jane are lovely and looked after us really well. The place has a lovely feel to it. Lovely dinner on the deck overlooking the river. Kind of hoped the flying fox might break overnight so we could... More

We chose The Flying Fox because it is near to whanganui and we had heard good things about it. The reality was even better than we hoped for. We stayed in the Glory Cart. A small wooden caravan with kitchen and dining table. And attached to this a large tent mounted on a raised wooden deck with a double bed... More

We (a young traveling couple) stayed at the flying fox in the "glamping" tent called "Glory Cart" for two nights and we loved it! Here is our review: What can you expect of the flying fox? We found this accommodation online by accident since we were looking for a rural place to stay close to the Whanganui River. When we... More

We stayed one night here and would love to have stayed longer. The new owners could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Though you can self cater they cooked us a wonderful meal after we'd had a long day on the river. Passing over the river on the cable car adds to the feeling of really getting away from... More

Jane and Kelly have been here for 3 weeks at the time of our stay. They are doing well and loved learning about the place - they have it clean and tidy and just simply lovely. We were in need of some time out and this place was absolutely ideal. We stayed in the James K Baxter Cottage and as... More

We stayed 2 nights in the Brewers Cottage and had an amazing time. The drive is steep but drivable and access to the property is via a small cable car across the river; what an entrance! The cottage was quaint, like something out of The Hobbit but with all the facilities we needed to have a great time. The host... More

I stayed here with a group of 4 whilst riding the mountains to sea cycle trail. This was hands down the best accommodation we stayed in on our trip and possibly ever. Annette is the hostess with the mostest, comfortable cosy quirky accommodation, the best food we had in NZ and the flying fox was a hoot. This place is... More

Quirky and cosy. Like a big comfy treehouse. A museum of 50's, 60's, 70's memorabilia this cottage had a familiar feeling for our party of four 50 year old mountain bikers doing the Mountains to Sea. This experience is a must do if you are planning a stay in the area. From the flying fox trip on the way over... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Three rustic self-contained, handbuilt cottages are nestled in a garden and bush setting overlooking the Whanganui River. A 'Glamping' tent and a small number of camping pitches complete the accommodation choices. This piece of paradise has been lovingly developed into a truly unique place to stay. Access is only by aerial cableway or via the river by canoe or river taxi, making it the ideal 'get away from it all' retreat. All the cottages are fully equipped with bedding, towels, kitchens, music and book collections. For campers there is a bush shower and toilet facilities. There is also free wi-fi access for those who need to keep in touch with the outside world. Halfway between Pipiriki and Whanganui along the Mountain to Sea Cycle Trail and Te Araroa Walkway , this is also a welcome overnight stay for cyclists, canoeist and walkers. Dinner and breakfast can be provided , and 'The Store' at the Flying Fox has provisions for self-catering with our gardens providing organic in season fruit/vegetables along with local artwork and other products. ... more   less
