Detailed Reviews
we have just tayed at the york mansions apartments - this was a 2 bedroom apartment which was very comfortable and clean, and enjoyable stay. Only thing if you are on the 2nd or upper floor there are stairs. Excellent stay well recommended, handy for most conveniences.

The York apartments are quaint, excellently located and the hosts are indeed friendly and helpful. While I gave it a rating of 4 I do have one criticism. I stayed at the Baroness Suite with my mother and sister. The main bedroom has a wonderful bed, the kitchen is more than adequate and the bathroom excellent. The second bedroom however is very small and has two very uncomfortable single beds which I think are not really suitable for adults. My sister was not able to sleep on the bed but fortunately the lounge was comfortable. I feel the apartments are more suitable for a couple or a family with very young children. Sleep quality rates highly for me and this was a let down.
As for breakfast, this is not a criticism just a misunderstanding. I thought breakfast was included in the rate but it wasn't.
I don't want Ann and John to think that we didn't enjoy our stay at the York we certainly did but I think the bed situation needs to be pointed out to future travellers. I don't know why people thought location is noisy and rooms are not warm we thought the opposite.

This is a great place to stay. We stayed in the
"Baroness" apartment which has a real antique feel to it. I almost could see the "lady" herself in my sitting room. The apartment has two bedrooms a great bathroom(no bath though which my husband was disappointed in... I think he had visions of a great claw foot tub)a kitchen and a lovely "sitting room" complete with huge fireplace. Decor is really beautiful and you get the feeling you have stepped back in time. Launceston itself is on your doorstep(we had a view of fireworks from the Launceston show on our final night)The beds have electric blankets, trust me you will need them in Tasmania in wintertime. The gardens are beautiful(at the rear of the building)dont be put off by the front entrance, after all this is an old building. All in all I would recommend this place to all. Old world charm with all the mod-cons.

Perhaps we should have been warned by the fact that there was only one review on this hotel. It was written in 2004 and I feel the writer was wearing rose coloured glasses. The building is on a very busy street. The garden at the back very small and certainly not secluded as implied. On entering the building there is a very musty smell which persists and a very run down air to carpets and paintwork. I am sure when the previous owners did up the apartments they were very smart, but after 15 years they need a spruce up. I am afraid they are trading on the quaint effect for the American market. Even on a sunny day the apartments are dark. We stayed in the Baroness and the washing machine is perched outside the kitchen door, which has to be open and shut to access the machine and could prove to be very dangerous as it is at the top of quite steep stairs. We were very disappointed and would certainly not stay here again.

Spent two days in the Lodge. Loved the Heritage styled furniture circa 1840's ( albeit with modern refinements ) when the Mansions were originally built. Even leather recliners in the Lounge Room !! See attached picture. Comfortable beds, modem compact bathroom, fully equipped kitchen. Free laundry facilities incl dryer. Garden at the back.
Easy walking to the centre of Launceston and various restaurants. ( Liked the recommended Jail-House Grill cnr York and Wellington Sts )
Car parking at the front door.
Staying in a place like this was definitely a highlight of our Tassie trip.
Thoroughly recommend.

Stayed at York Mansions in late April early May with my husband and my mum. It is an old house (1840) that has been converted to six apartments. Upon arrival we opened the bottom door and were greeted by three flights of steep narrow steps (mum was quite intimidated). We were staying in the duke of York apartment (top floor). I would recommend that if you are unable to manage stairs that you ask for grd floor or even the 1st floor (1 flight up).
We managed to haul the luggage up and then my mum realised that her room was up another two flights, lucky she was a good sport.
The apartment was very comfortable, good roomy lounge area, good bedroom with electric blankets, serviceable kitchen with everything you need, good bathroom only negative that it needs a shower curtain to stop the floor getting very wet.
We did wonder how it would be in mid winter, there was a gas fire which we were using in April/May and we thought it would be a bit chilly in mid winter. There is a lovely garden out back and a little Juliette balcony in front, unfortunately our apartment had a big power pole right in front so pics from the balcony were not as nice as they could be, we saw a few fab sunsets whilst there.
It’s a really good location, walking distance to restaurants and some nearby attractions like the park with the monkeys.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again b7t would ask for grd or first floor.

Very good position to walk into the city . The apartment is comfortable and well set up retaining the period charm of the building . Very good high speed wifi is provided . The bedroom is quiet and has a comfortable very pretty brass bed . The kitchen is fully equipped and there are laundry facilities . The gardens are lovely to walk around with pretty secluded tables to sit and enjoy a barbeque or quiet drink, surprising terraced space so close to the city . The staff are extremely helpful and friendly .

Stayed at the Gamekeeper apartment which is on the ground floor. Needed fresh air but the window wouldn't open unless you put something in it to keep it from shutting. Comfortable, but not luxury. As it was the ground floor it was dark and needed to keep the lights on. Colours a bit drab. You could go up to the garden which was up stairs out the back door, but towels etc flapping overhead didn't add to the atmosphere. No shampoo only conditioner. No tissues. Bedrooms were in the back which was good and couldn't hear the street noise. Bed was comfortable.

Our family of 4 stayed in the 2 brm gamekeeper cottage and while it was comfortable it was definitely not 'luxury', and nor was it worth paying $285 per night for. I booked through a booking site and unfortunately did not have time to check the fine print as I had very limited internet connection so thought I was paying $175 for the night. Had I realised the tariff was for 2 guests and they charged $55 per extra child (and $20 for infants) or guest despite no breakfast being included, I would definitely have stayed elsewhere. After coming from cradle mountain lodge which was a similar price for the 4 of us with an amazing buffet breakfast included and head and shoulders above this property for luxury, I was very disappointed and feel ripped off.

Response from John m, Owner at Apartments At York Mansions
Responded 26 Mar 2015
The guest’s complaint is that the booking platform did not adequately show the extra person rate and that we were at fault. The booking platform used by the guest was My Bookings Entertainment, a reputable international system. The guest wrongly assumed that the rate shown for two persons was the four person rate. It is quite clear that the rate shown is for two people, starting from when the cursor is placed over the rate. The words “Fully self-contained two bedroom apartment. Rate is for 2 guests, maximum occupancy is 4. Charges apply for additional guests.” comes up before you even start the booking process. As you progress through the booking process the conditions of booking and costs are made quite clear. Inexplicably the guest did not read the clear statements that there would be a charge for the two extra persons. The implication that we disguised the extra charges “in the fine print” and the words “I feel ripped off” implies dishonesty on our part and is extremely disappointing. In fact all we did was receive a reservation for four people on an internationally recognized platform and charged the contracted rate. In terms of our four person rate of $285.00, it was more than competitive with equivalent four share rates for a two bedroom apartment. For the guest’s to think they would be able to find a quality two bedroom apartment for four people at a rate of $175.00 was optimistic in the extreme. Wherever they stayed they would have paid a similar rate for similar accommodation. To compare the rates at Cradle Mountain Lodge, with our rates was unreasonable. As delightful as the cabins are at Cradle Mountain Lodge, they comprise one room, with a seating area, queen bed plus a single bed. The forth person would have slept on a roll out bed. Our apartment comprised a separate lounge dining room, two separate bedrooms, a separate full kitchen and laundry facilities.

This place is fantastic. Perfectly located, close to everything Launceston has to offer. Four of us stayed in the Duchess of York apartment and it was flawless. Clean, well appointed and full of history, it felt like we were staying in a house! Large and comfortable rooms across two levels and beautiful living and dining areas. The kitchen is fully equipped and the garden at the back is perfect for an afternoon drink under the beautiful oak tree. The hosts were very friendly and looked after us from the moment we arrived. We have stayed in other hotels in Launceston but this is by far the best choice. We will be back - thank you!
