Detailed Reviews
Our stay in the Twin room for 2 nights was delightful. John greeted us on arrival at 12.10pm, after I phoned about check in & John advised our room was ready. Our Twin room had a Queen bed plus a Single bed, was quite roomy for us, with lovely full pillows & a comfy pillow top add on, on top of the mattress, to give a great night sleep. We loved the Post Office clock chimes, added to the experience of staying at the 'Cornwall'. With the window shut & split system fan on, we didn't notice the chimes through the night. The bathroom was functional, with the shower over the bathtub which was enjoyed also. There are 5 domestic washing machines for complimentary guest use, & just $2 to use 1 of 3 dryers for 30 mins, ample time to dry a load. The communal kitchen is very large, with multiple stoves, microwaves, dining tables & chairs, washing up station & even a well loved pool table to have a fun game after dinner. The 'Cornwall' is in a fabulous location, with an easy walk to Brisbane Street Mall & downtown locations. Suburban Metro buses are readily accessible, & we saw the free Tiger bus service around the city, though we didn't get to utilise it during our stay. Thank you John & your team, we would certainly stay again!

I expect worse from the price but I was pleasantly surprised. It helped being upgraded to the next level room so I don.t know what the cheaper rooms are like. However it was nice and clean. Good tea and a comfy bed. Awesome location. It even has a big kitchen area which is handy for budget travelers but it needed a good clean before you cooked anything. I would return though as it's pretty hard to beat for the price.

When I told a work colleague where I was planning to stay they asked why. I answered “it’s close to where I’ll be working and cheap”. The reply “may there’s a reason for that?”
On my way down to Launceston I started reading reviews of the Cornwall and wondered what I had done by booking. But, some seemed a little exaggerated upon arriving.
It is a lovely old building and, as some reviews point out, the carpet is a little old and tired. It’s true there is no lift. But it’s a lovely staircase you walk up and not arduous at all. But....
Most rooms are in an add on to the lovely old building that you reach via a bridge. If you want to iron you go to the laundry room. The walls in my room are a little thin (though on my first morning when woken by fellow guests rowing in the hallway that wouldn’t have mattered. And the window was frosted glass so you couldn’t see out but there wasn’t a lot to see.
The room was small but clean. The bed extremely comfortable and the shower, whilst a little poorly lit, was wonderful (good water pressure and hot though the plumbing was a little noisey).
So it’s perhaps budget rather than boutique (who knows, the front rooms on the old part of the building may be much nicer) but it’s comfortable, clean and conveniently located to everything. And the staff (including when I was arriving after reception closed) were friendly and polite.
Stayed at flasher places but they cost a lot more. If you want flash and modern then maybe not for you. But it has character and it’s comfy (albeit a little claustrophobic) and if you just want a good nights sleep and a great shower at a good price it’s worth a stay.

+1
When checking in the reception person advised that he had given me an upgrade to a queen deluxe room and I thought “oh how nice!” Well, nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to encounter. It was dirty and smelled of stale beer. The room was so pokey and old. I couldn’t believe it! The bathroom was disgusting. I was too sacred to have a shower or sit on the toilet seat for fear of catching some disease. One of the pillows cases has not been change as it showed clear evidence of having been laid on as it was creased and did not have the fresh crisp look to it as it should. I would not recommend this “boutique” hotel to my worst enemy. Filthy, grimy, and unclean. And you can’t find a car park after 6pm for love or money.

Not expensive for a stay, as long as you can sleep and take a shower after your day activities. Great location, 5 mins walk going to the park, 10 mins walk going to the transit centre and 15 mins to cataract gorge. Very close to restaurants which is plus points! It’s an old building, expect a wear and tear. I had a twin room, first bed had tired mattress not good for my bad back, good thing the double bed is okay, I was able to sleep. Shower not well lit, but I don’t mind. Old sink at toilet with stains and chipped cupboards. I’ve read they did refurbishments of other rooms. Mine hasn’t been done yet obviously but it would be nice if they do for all the rooms. Room is not that bad! You pay what you get.

Overall the hotel is dirty and rundown. We had taken breakfast makings but after inspecting the communal kitchen we decided to eat breakfast out. This kitchen looked like it had never been cleaned for months with seasonal workers using it and apparently no one cleaning it regularly.
We could overlook the rundown aspect of the hotel. but cleanliness - absolutely not. Won’t be staying again

Stayed at the Cornwall Historic Hotel and was very pleased to find that their basic rooms were clean, with supplies of everything you need for a short stay. Conveniently located in the centre of town. The manager and staff were very friendly and eager to recommend local businesses. Will definitely stay here next time I’m in Launceston.

Reception is never open, they leave a contact number at the front desk that no one answers to, there’s about 5 car spaces so you must get in early if driving. Staff very unhelpful about other parking options but later found it written on our check in paperwork but they had no idea about that. The actual room is super basic tiny TVs, although a comfortable bed. Stainless steel shower floors? just feel super tacky. The vanitys all chipped down the bottoms of them.. Hallways smelt like freshly smoked cigarettes. You can hear the room next to you talking clearly through the walls, we had other guests out fighting in the hallway at 3am to top it all off and bags being dragged down the stairs as there’s no lifts. Glad it didn’t cost much to stay here. And lucky for them there were ‘no cancellations’ or we would have when we arrived

From other reviews, it’s pretty clear there is a huge disparity between rooms in this hotel. We booked a standard queen, but the room was very small, tired with a sagging floor, bad carpet stains and an old bed squeezed into the corner of the room. To have a TV, it was mounted above the room door. It was hard to fathom such a poor room based on the photos when we booked.
The lady at the front desk was kind enough to upgrade us to a family room. This was in a newer wing behind the hotel. The room had more floor and no sagging. Beds were still very tired, low to the floor and uncomfortable.
The location is great, and the price we paid is more than fair for the area. My biggest disappointment is being duped with photos of a 3* standard hotel room and being handed something that might satisfy in a 1* hostel. And while providing an upgrade is kind, I felt staff knew that the rooms struggle to satisfy and still make customers dance the tango and ask for an alternative room which I found unsettling.

Just returned after two short stays at the Cornwall. This hotel holds a significant place in history for hosting the foundation meeting for the establishment of the city of Melbourne. Comfortable and budget-suited, only 150 metres from City Park and a host of restaurant choices. Coffee/lunch bistro next door opens at 6.30am for those who need an early (us) caffeine heart-start. Heaps of walks to do within a few kilometres of Cameron Street. Special thanks to on-site manager James, who offered us local knowledge and a welcoming smile.
