Rydges Newcastle receives a mix of praise and criticism from guests. While the central location and scenic harbor views are frequently lauded, some travelers express disappointment over the pricey parking and outdated amenities. Although the service can be a hit or miss, with some staff members providing attentive care and others seeming unresponsive, the cleanliness of the hotel generally earns commendation. However, the hotel's atmosphere and room conditions are noted as lively yet dated, suggesting a need for refurbishment to enhance the overall guest experience.

Area was active and had a great atmosphere and loved the train rides for charity.

This is my first stay in a hotel since Covid and whilst the hotel probably has the best location in Newcastle, a combination of reasons made this stay only average at the best.

Let’s starts with the positives first:
1) Great location on the waterfront and the rooms with the views of the working harbour are great.
2) Spacious rooms that are all suites with a separate sitting area & bedroom
3) Comfortable king sized bed

The negatives are unfortunately many
1) Restaurant is not open, even room service breakfast is unavailable. I could understand this when occupancy levels in April & May were pretty low but there is no reason why the restaurant now is not open. Seriously the only options for breakfast are ‘breakfast boxes’ & $12.00 bacon & egg rolls?
2) No Foxtel
3) Gym & pool closed
4) Was told the hotel car park was full and to either park on the street or use a private car park that cost $38 overnight
5) Hotel is 20 years old now and is starting to look tired and shows its age. A soft refurb is probably overdue

I was travelling with a friend who stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn Express and for $80 less per night got a modern room with Foxtel, walk in shower (no shower bath combo with shower curtains) and a basic continental breakfast included. So other than the water views, bigger room and the slightly superior location, there is no reason to pay a premium to stay at this hotel which is a shame. Seems to have deteriorated since it changed from Crowne Plaza to Rydges a couple of years ago. Even with Covid the experience could be better.

We were very impressed with our recent stay at Rydges Newcastle.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile and checked in with ease. Although it was a busy time and a large queue had formed behind, the check-in staff remained calm and professional.

The hotel was well sign posted for the current COVID-19 conditions and the common areas we encountered were very clean with sanitiser also provided on each level.

Our room was a King Spa Harbourside Balcony Suite. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and bedding and towels in great condition.
Yes the walls and doorways could do with a paint, the bathroom could do with a makeover but the room was very clean with many included facilities.

Other reviewers had touched the current parking situation. We did not have an issue as we understand nearly everything in life runs a little differently at the moment. We just dropped our bags off upon check in, parked the car in one of the local secure parking stations and drove the car back to re-load upon check out.

The hotel is in a great position to enjoy and access different parts of Newcastle City and is surrounded by many great eateries along the foreshore. We were even lucky enough to see the local dolphins put on a show just out of the front of the hotel.

We booked directly with the hotel on the Rydges website and got an excellent deal with no deposit required and no cancellation fees. This helps people feel comfortable and more likely to book in this current situation.

When the time comes for us to return to Newcastle we will be booking Rydges again.

This is a very good choice if you are planning a trip to Newcastle (and you should!).

The rooms are like small apartments - a separate bedroom, lounge/small kitchen and a good size bathroom. We found the sofa and beds to be perfectly comfortable, so it's easy to relax. The highlight is the harbour which is right outside the window. You have a front seat to all the comings and goings of the harbour, plus immediately outside the hotel is a great harbourside promenade.

It's an easy walk or tram ride to the sea/beaches of Newcastle, and also to Darby Street boutiques/cafes/dining scene. There are dining options around, however we visited in late June 2019 so some places were still closed after the lockdown. The area near the hotel is being revived, so it will be a fantastic area very soon.

Accessibility: fully accessible.

Improvements: more coathangers in the bedroom, and provide dishwashing equipment (perhaps a Covid-measure?).

Great location in Honeysuckle precinct convenient to restaurants, close to light rail to access the rest of Newcastle city, if you are feeling more active it is a nice walk along the foreshore from the hotel to Hunter St Mall & the Beaches. Great view of the harbour. Room was comfortable and the staff were generally friendly and attentive. There was no parking available at the hotel, but there was a parking station $12 a day close by (about 250m). I would suggest you request room close to reception if you don't want a long walk every time you leave the hotel. Our room was at the end of the longest hotel corridor I have ever seen and you can only exit the hotel from the reception area. Breakfasts were pretty good as far as hotel breakfasts go, however communication between wait staff the barista and the kitchen seemed to be lacking. On one day our coffees never arrived after 25 minutes, as we left when we told the barista, she said she never got the order. Then the waiter who took our order just said “that's ok we will just take it off the bill." No apology or explanation. The next day we ordered coffee when we sat down, then ordered our breakfast about 5-10 minutes later. The breakfast arrived then, I had to ask about my coffee before they arrived a few minutes later. Both times it was later in breakfast service (around 10am) and therefore not very busy. Only a few real negatives from a very pleasant stay.

We stayed over the Christmas period with our two small children. We stayed in a king Harbourview suite which fit us in well the hotel itself provided many fantastic facilities such as the pool, which had sun exposure throughout the day but had shaded areas to sit. The bar and restaurant (and pool bar) were fantastic. The location is superb, walking distance to a heap of restaurants at honeysuckle and the foreshore. A central location to drive to beaches and inner precincts like derby st and the junction. Only thing is parking at the hotel, an additional $29 on a room fee is a bit much but there is free parking over night on the street which is easy to get and worth considering if you’re driving around for some of the day (it’s $3ph metered during the day). The staff were super friendly which made for a very pleasant stay. We’re excited to return!

Hotel location is superb, walking distance to the beaches, restaurants and shops. Free parking at the beaches and ticket/meter parking on the streets 2-hour, 4-hour, 8-hour, depending on your location. Newcastle has a very convenient parking app, you can even extend your parking in the comfort of hotel room.

We didn't have any problems such as lift too small, parking too far away, no crockery or cutlery. It is a hotel, not a service apartment so people shouldn't be expecting crockery and cutlery.

It is COVID that restricted the number of people in the lift, not the hotel's fault, happy to wait for the next lift or take the stairs. Carparks and street parking are very conveniently located, never had a problem. Be active and walk.

Staff were courteous and friendly, we stayed for 3 night and didn't request for any housekeeping.

Stayed with my daughter for 4 nights so she could attend a block at Tafe. Great location for our needs as it was central to everything we needed and had outdoor parking available at $19 per night. Yes as part of minimising contact rooms aren't serviced unless requested the night before but this wasn't an issue at all. Room attendants were very helpful and happy to swap towels etc in the hallway. In fact all staff were polite and helpful, the only negative was breakfast in the morning seemed a little disorganised we had to wait quite some time to be seated, as did a number of other guests, and service was slow...it may have just been a busy morning. We'll definitely be back.

From the outside the hotel looks inviting and worth the nightly rate. I was greated with a smile and can't fault the service I received during our stay. I was however underwhelmed by our room which was called the 'King Spa Suite with Harbour View' - I think it is meant to be one of their best rooms but the decor was dated and very cheaply made, there were stains on the curtains and they charged us $360 per night which once I saw the room I felt was over priced.

At night there were people mulling around the harbour side of the building after partying all night which woke us up so a suggestion would be to have a security guard on a Saturday night who moves people on from the perimeter of the hotel.

I also think for the nightly rate there should be free onsite parking not a daily fee of $29 for valet parking.

I don’t think I’ll ever stay at Rydges in Newcastle again
We were there for two nights and on our second day while we were out for the day our room had not been touched so at 6-45 pm that night we went up to our room and everything was were we left it in the morning. The wet towels were still on the floor we had no clean towels also we placed some left over snacks in the kitchen tidy bin and they were still ther also. I placed the bin outside our door and it was still there the next morning with food in it

After letting the staff know about what had happened they bought some new towels and on checking out we were asked how we enjoyed our stay
As we told the girl what had happened she didn’t care at all.At $300-00 a night I would except a far better customer service then what we received which was nothing.

Dear Greg, Thank you for you feedback following you stay with us back in April. I am so sorry to hear of the experience you have noted, specifically the service and that you were not aware of the process we previously had where we asked guests to request for their rooms to be serviced by our housekeeping team as with COVID a lot of our guests preferred to not have a team member enter the room during their stay. Although it sounds like we fell short on delivering the service you expected, you will be very pleased to know that our housekeeping team are once again servicing all guest rooms without requests. I hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back to show you the service is of a high standard at Rydges Newcastle. Kind Regards, Reece.M
