Came here for our honeymoon and it didn’t disappoint. Very welcoming and diligent staff. We did a section of the Kepler track and then came back in the afternoon for a hot tub for sunset and star gazing which were unbelievable. Perfect location to get to Te Anau/ or the Milford Track.

Disappointing. The thing I was looking forward to most was the food as the reviews and photos looked very good. Also, their sample menu looked amazing. Many choices per course. But this is not the reality, they are only doing a set menu per evening with only one choice per course. We did not like some of the ingredients in two of the courses and therefore did not enjoy them. I feel they need to remove the sample menu from their website, as it is misleading and they should tell people when they book a package deal (accommodation and dinner) that dinner is a set menu with one item per course. Considering there is only one choice I feel they should not be charging $90 per person. Also the eggs benedict my partner ordered in the morning looked like it was a child's portion and had very little salmon. What made this experience worse for me was the fact that it was my 50th birthday so I was hoping for something special. Hopefully when they start serving dinner again in the spring that they will have more choices available. The lodge and the rooms were very comfortable and cozy.

Response from Andy Cunningham, Owner at Fiordland Lodge

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Fiordland Lodge. At Fiordland Lodge we encourage past guests to post reviews to this valuable platform so as potential guests may read them. We’re of course are pleased that the vast majority of our reviews are outstandingly positive and acknowledge of course that a few will not be. Our approach to the menu that we have been running the last 24 months has certainly been adjusted to the times we have been living in the last 2 years business wise. The sample menu items on the DINING section of our website are an indication of dishes that our chefs create on a regular basis and there to give the looker more an indication of the style we serve. We offer a set 3 course dinner with pre dinner canapes prior to dinner for $90 per person which we think is excellent value for money. Our restaurant team always fulfill any requests with dietaries and alternative options should a dish not be to someone's palette and the feedback that we receive is happily overwhelmingly positive. We also think our breakfasts are more than hearty and all guests are able to add to there main fare from several side options from the breakfast menu so apologies if this was not communicated to you. Come the Spring and now that the borders are opening we are certainly looking forward to regrouping the full kitchen team once again and being in a position to run our normal optional menu that we were operating pre-covid. This is not the usual feedback we receive about our dining experience (as can be seen in other reviews on this forum) but nevertheless your comments will be shared for consideration. We hope that in balance you'd consider your stay with us a good one, and we trust you enjoyed the rest of your birthday celebrations.

Spectacular scenery, stunning food and a very impressive building and grounds, especially the two outdoor hot tubs. However they were understaffed, the rooms have very poor soundproofing and the interiors were a little untidy. Shame that the service let the overall experience down, the staff they did have on were helpful, but could not be in two places at once.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments, we appreciate the intent was to present a balanced appraisal. Staffing – yes correct very tough times Neil, being a small Southland town at the bottom of New Zealand covid has hit us lastly and due to these circumstances, we have come very close to having to close the lodge recently. The staff that are able to work have been working around the clock trying their absolute best to just keep the lodge doors open and honor existing bookings so to not upset peoples travel plans. We have also taken great efforts to bolster our staff resources to support our core team in the last 24 months but rely heavily every year on seasonal foreign workers which are obviously just not about. Décor is of course a matter of taste and much thought was given to the functionality of guest rooms and the overall aesthetic, designed to blend natural materials. It is a shame you felt disappointed with this element, but we trust you were comfortable. Yes, the Hot Tubs since installed have become an instant success and enjoyed by many. Fran and James, my chefs will be pleased with your comments in regard to your praise in regard to the food and in general we have a strong, competent core team, many of whom have been with the lodge for a significant period. We’re grateful for your endorsement of the lodge in general and are pleased that you enjoyed the property and the magnificent surrounds.

We had two nights here prior to going to going on to Milford and really enjoyed the stay. A perfect day followed by a clear night meant star-gazing from the wonderful outdoor hot tub. The room overlooked Lake Te Anau and mountains which is a simply magnificent view to wake up to. Dinner in-house was delightful.

Stayed for 4 nights. We were the only guests there on the first night and we were treated like VIPs. Amazing service in the lounge and restaurant. Food was a 3 course set menu each night with canapés to start. They have a great chef! The rooms have an unobstructed view of Mt Luxmore and the mountain range. More guests arrived over the following days but the high standard of service continued. Great location, great staff, great food and great rooms. We also enjoyed the hot tub after some full on walking during the day.

Beautiful, inside and out. Hot tub in the snow, back to a clean warm room and comfortable bed. Amazing staff, incredible food for our group with mixed dietary requirements. Setting was incredible, would have stayed longer if we could.

We stayed at the lodge after a trip out to Milford Sound and it was spectacular. The lodge itself is beautifully constructed - like something i would expect to see in a movie. It has so much character and charm and is beautifully positioned overlooking the lake and mountain ranges. The main part of the lodge has an amazing open fire that you can sit next to in big comfy chairs and have a wine and look out at the stunning landscape. We spent the night sitting by the fire and chatting to other guests before an amazing dinner was served! The staff were amazing - they went out of fheir way to make sure our stay was perfect. So friendly and helpful. I would love to go back next time im in NZ.

We had such a fantastic experience staying at Fiordland Lodge. We stayed four nights and were treated to amazing food, great wine, interesting people to chat with at the end of the day and an incredible team of people working at the Lodge. This was our first time staying in luxury lodge type accommodation and we could not fault the service or the lodge. It was amazing. Thank you Andy and your team, you made our stay a memorable one.
