We stayed at Fiordland Lodge for 2 nights in December as part of a wedding.

The lodge is situated just 5 minutes out of Te Anau, and is tucked away into the countryside off the beaten track. You could drive by a thousand times and not realise it was there... as you take a right and drive to the path towards to lodge, it reveals itself in all it's glory. You enter through big wooden doors and are greeted immediately and warmly. The main hall is absolutely stunning, looking out over rolling green and towards an amazing mountain range. The lodge is full of wood and every detail is considered. The rooms are incredible, heated bathroom floors, real animal rugs (we think seal...?) And just everything though about. Even a cafieterre for your coffee in bed in the AM...our room held the same view as the main hall, with a balcony running across 4 rooms in the stretch. Almost surreal...

Food was outstanding. A surf and turf style crayfish and venison medley in the first evening for all. Breakfast was to order and hosted a selection of kiwi classics (mince on toast) and staples such as a cracking eggs benedict and full english choices. Just quality ingredients carefully considered and cooked really really well. Warm, homely but fine too.

Drinks was mainly coffee - a cracking flat white in the morning. Espresso was bang on, not over or underextracted, and milk was ideally steamed, with a bit of latte art too. Exactly what you'd expect to find in a speciality roasters. I didn't ask for any cocktails as I don't believe the bar was set up for volume cocktail work, but great selection of beers, whisky and a brilliant wine list.

All in, an amazing stay and somewhere we will never forget! Andy, James and all the staff really go above and beyond to make life special when you are there.

It’s all about the view. The suite we had was on the corner of the building and very spacious, with great storage for clothing. I’m a complete “unpacker” and there is nothing more welcome than ample space and coat hangers. The Fiordland Lodge had both.

Staff was pleasant and very responsive to special accommodations. We had to vacate for one evening for an overnight on the Milford sound. Staff picked up and stored our baggage that was waiting for us in the when we returned. Ice buckets were always refreshed.

The heated mirror and floor in the bathroom was wonderful. Plush towels and robes. And ample countertop space.

The food was good. Two choices for dinner’s entree, main and dessert. Breakfasts are homey and fresh. One itch was the formula of having guests come down to the common room for “canapés” and drinks at 6pm and in so doing, order one’s meal. Forced interaction with other guests. Not something we enjoy doing.

Enjoy a hot tub if you visit… they are immaculate, private and offer an indescribable view, especially at sundown.

With their close proximity to Te r’s opportunity to go into this small town for a lunch or shopping. Two very fine NZ “souvenir” shops—- more like boutiques offering finely made jewelry, clothing and pottery.

What a wonderful hotel. The minute you pull up to the beautiful secluded spot you know this is a special place. Sitting on a small bluff outside of the town of Te Anau you are at a very quiet spot overlooking the mountains and fiord. The staff warmly greeted us upon arrival and even though we were several hours early they whisked us off to our room. The room was comfortable and well appointed with a million dollar view. The Lodge is a little remote and for this reason breakfast and dinner are included with your stay. The food was wonderful with the chef preparing a 3 course meal. You have a selection of several appetizers, entrees and desert. The food was wonderful. In the morning a lovely breakfast is thoughtfully prepared. The service in the restaurant was as expected our needs were attentively addressed. I would highly recommend a stay at the Fiordland Lodge.

This would be 10 stars but that is not an option. Start with service. The owners, brothers Andy and James, are visible and always helpful. The staff included Haley who clearly has been here awhile and knows her stuff, but equally impressive are more recent hires from all over the world who all have a positive attitude and have one goal, which is to make the guest happy. As for the food, it was exceptional, from a half dozen or more choices at breakfast to 3 course dinners. And the sorbet is better than any sorbet we have had anywhere. The location is optimal and cuts the time down more than half to go to Milford Sound or any number of the great walks in the area. Much better base than Queenstown. If in the area, run don’t walk to Fiordland Lodge. But book early, it is very popular and only holds 25 or so guests.

Part of a two week NZ family vacation to South Island, we adored staying at this welcoming, cozy lodge. Stunning views of the lake and mountains, luxurious rooms tastefully appointed in a California meets Aspen style, welcoming management and staff — all made for an unforgettable stay.

Welcomed by Hayley after driving from Queenstown, we had canapés and drinks at 6 in the common room with a large wood-burning fireplace, followed by a carefully curated dinner with farm to table charm. It did not get dark until after 9PM and we enjoyed every minute on the beautiful grounds.

Heated towel rack, modern shower, and organic beauty products were much enjoyed after a rainy full-day Milford Sound trip.

Many thanks to James for arranging a private tour to Milford Sound and for his management of this beautiful gem of a lodge, Emma for dotting on us at breakfast, Rosie for amazing drinks, Hayley for her care as exquisite dinner host, and to all others who made our Te Anau / Milford Sound trip a “must return”.

What an incomparable stay.
Our day's journey to Te Anou took a little longer than anticipated, so our arrival was pushing the outer envelope of the dinner hour. Andy, Haley and the others didn't hurry us. We got settled, enjoyed the cocktail time in the lounge and the full dinner experience.
The wine list featured Otago offerings. The dinner menu allowed a selection between two starters and a couple of mains, all exquisitely prepared and presented. Don't look for steakhouse fare; the offerings the three nights we were there included duck, rabbit, seafood and more. Everything was tasty. Desert featured a cheese plate, sorbet and a rotating option, usually involving chocolate.
The décor of the lodge was in keeping with the setting near Fiordland National Park. Heavy timbers. Lots of light. Open spaces. The fireplace lounge was very comfy. We were a party of six. My wife and I lucked out and drew a great room on the second floor, with a separate sitting area in addition to the bedroom. Very homelike. Siblings were jealous. The one drawback I remember was the coffee/espresso machine was a bit complicated for me.
The grounds are nice to explore, and our first morning on site we were treated to a double rainbow over the lake, which seemed to last forever. There is a helipad on the property, so if noise bothers you, be forewarned. It was not bothersome to me.
The Lodge is convenient to the business district of Te Anou and we got helpful hints from the staff about how much time to allow to make the various activities we planned. Andy helpfully allowed us to leave our luggage there for a day after our stay, while we took an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound.
The three days there were much too short.

3 things we loved: 1. staff- every single one is thoughtful, kind, warm, welcoming. 2. breathtaking views. 3. Hot tubs- private, surrounded by native grasses, overlooking the lake, easily reserved.

2 things that made us thoughtful: 1. Food is average. Feels and tastes like it’s been prepared in advance. 2. Rooms in main lodge are not well sound proofed and seemed like we were sharing a room with our neighbors.

Very, very comfortable building and rooms. It was hard to check out on departure day. Very attentive staff during our stay, thanks to Michelle, Cristina, James and all. Cristina ran laundry for us one day and then, upon our wet and muddy return from the Kepler Track, she had our hiking clothes washed during dinner and ready by morning(!). And from what I can tell, they didn't charge us at all for this. Things to know before you go include the menu; if you have dietary restrictions reach out in advance to see if dinner menu is set or if there will be choices. Also note that there may still be staffing shortages in New Zealand hospitality overall, so questions before booking or arrival may be best answered by email versus phone. This was a wonderful stay and in conversations with other guests from Australia, New Zealand, England and the US, it was a special occasion type of lodging for them.

We had the experience of staying in a 5 star luxury lodge the week before we came to lodge. The 5 star lodge was approximately $1800 per night so about 3x the amount we were paying to stay per night at Fiordland Lodge. So we set our expectations based on the price we paid.

OMG! Talk about under promise over deliver!! The service and the food blew us away!
The lodge rooms were very nice with an opening to the front lawn if you are on the ground floor. There is a open pantry where you can help yourself to a beer or a bag of chips. The minibar in the room is free. The food was extremely yummy! The wine list isnt that extensive but well priced like all the alcoholic drinks. The hot tub with the super amazing view! The Fiordland Lodge can take on any 5 star luxury lodge.

Big thank you Karina, Thu and Andy for making our stay such a memorable one. We absolutely loved the lodge and we will be back soon!

Very mixed. We erroneously thought we were closer to Milford Sound, the reason for coming here. Turns out, it was a half hour helicopter ride or a two hour drive. Hire the helicopter; it’s magical, and worth every penny. It lands right at the hotel and takes you to Milford Sound where you can hire a private or public boat. The hotel can arrange either.

Pros—Staff was great, food delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Small wine list. Setting beautiful and serene. Hot tubs a plus!

Cons—Fiordland seems geared to those who are here to fish or weddings, and large family outings. The day we departed, we felt a little pushed out as the wedding party arrived.

Overall—if your goal is to visit Milford Sound and enjoy a day on the water, better to stay in Queenstown and fly over for the day. We didn’t feel we added enough to our trip to add a stay at Fiordland hotel.

Sorry Julie I just have picked up on this post this morning and as my email to you on the 13th this was scheduled to be refunded by accounts on the 20th of the month when we process all our invoices and any refunds. This was refunded to you on the morning of the 14th once you had emailed me in concern and would have shown up typically overnight. Apologize for any misunderstanding and we hope to welcome you to Fiordland Lodge on another occasion.

Thanks for the question and I am more than happy to put you onto a waiting list but could be a bit of a long shot because the date is not far off and the fact we are also fully booked on the 21st March. Maybe you could email the lodge your details and we can advise if something becomes available. Many thanks Andy
