Lovely homey atmosphere, fantastic location, free wifi and parking, nice tidy rooms, well-equipped and large kitchen. The owner Ross is so pleasant and helpful. Best place we've stayed in so far, we didn't want to leave!

My stay at this hostel was okay, nice room, big kitchen. Good location, distance walk to the lake, friendly staff - helped me with some of my activity changes due to bad weather. Unfortunately, they didn't have free wi-fi. I would stay here again.

Clean bedrooms, bathrooms and showers. Kitchen was often clean, but it is quite poorly equipped. Free wifi which didnt always work properly. Lovely free sauna in the hostel. About 5-15min walk to grocery stores and city centre.

Hostel is in a good location in taupo, walking distance to the lake. On the lake are tons of motels though, for who wants the full lake experience. Stayed in a private ensuite. Was ok, nothing to fancy but good price-quality. WiFi was poor! It's free but most of the time just not working. Communal kitchen was ok, but old...

Great hosts, who even let you take their dog for a walk (Jessie is super well trained and a pleasure to walk with). Great open space kitchen, where lots of people can cook at the same time, many fridges and freezers with tons of space. Double rooms have ensuite bathroom. There is sufficient parking space for your car. Close to...

The receptionist staff were really nice and helped us with booking a tour. Our private room/en-suite was nice and the shared kitchen area was also clean and welcoming. The location was about a 5 - 10 minute walk to the main shops. Would definitely stay again if we went back.

Even though my friends and I didn't stay for long, 1 night, we were warmly welcomed and the staff took their time for us. The room and kitchen were clean and we felt really comfortable. The staff also helped us organize our trip the day after we stayed there, giving us recommendations even for locations more far away that were...

Hi and welcome to Taupo's original and favourite backpackers. Rainbow lodge was purpose built and designed for the needs of travellers by Mark Dumble (fishing expert??) and Sue Mrozinski themselves seasoned travellers. They had spent several years on the world's highways and by-ways and having accommodation experiences that are sometimes described as "Character Building" they settled in Taupo famous for its Rainbow Trout and beautiful scenery. Having had my own character building experiences I came to rest at Rainbow lodge and worked closely with them for a year before they handed me the reigns. Ross ... more   less
