Such a unique place you have here, Sue! And, even though the gale force winds and rain blowing across the lake thwarted the fishing plans, the storm watch we enjoyed from our lakeside windows more than made up for it. A wonderful little gem of a resort.

Thankyou so much Sheri. Yes the weather was pretty rough while you were here so I'm glad your stay was memorable. Pity about the fishing though. I hope you had more luck in your next stop.

I just keep coming back to soak up the view, relax and enjoy this wonderful spot. Sue is a wonderful host and the rooms are always immaculate, with lovely gardens. The sunsets are beautiful, the clouds and Lake Taupo are on our doorstep to see the ever changing mood.

I've stayed at Waitahanui Lodge twice this year & enjoyed it both times. The first time, I stayed in Cottage 1. An older style cottage, but is very clean, tidy & has everything you need. The second time was this past weekend, this time stayed in Cottage 4. This Cottage is right on the lakefront - beautiful views & if...

If you're looking for tiled showers, granite kitchen benches, leather chairs, and staff that don't really give a stuff, then go somewhere else. If you're looking for GENUINE rustic charm, a sparkling hostess (assisted by a regal cat), great location, and 'bach' type facilites then you've found the right spot! We stay here for fishing a couple of times each...

Dave you are a surprise. Thank you for going to the trouble to post a review. I love that I've guessed who you are from your comments, the giveaway was about the regal cat (I'll pass it on). Thank you for being such a great guest and for always leaving things so tidy. Hope to see you back soon.

We stayed here in October 2015 - I am so late writing this. We were in one of the beach rooms and it was so lovely. There was no one else here most of the time and we could lie back on the tables and look at the stars. We stayed for 3/4 nights and went to Craters of the...

Our host Sue was excellent, and took the time to show us through our rooms and make sure we new how to keep them warm. Our room was metres from the lake edge, and the sound of waves crashing on the beach was soothing. The lounge and master bedroom both opened out onto the lake. The rooms have an old...

Thankyou so much for your great review of our unique place and for taking the time to do so. I really should have responded well before this so I apologise. I've been renovating the other lakefront cottage and will post photos as soon as its ready. I look forward to your next visit.

Stayed here with my puppy and it was perfect for us. We had 1 night there and we had loads of spare beds. Unit 2 had 4 beds, catering for a small family or a group of friends. It is only 10 drive to Taupo town. It's a great place to stay and enjoy kayaking, fishing or swimming. It's a...

A beautiful mix of old and new. Remnants, photos and other little reminders of the old fishing lodge that was. A lovely quaint b & b nestling on the shores of Lake Taupo. So impressed with the setting, the service and rates that we always try to return when we're passing through. Thank you this beautiful snapshot of old New...

We stayed in a two bedroom unit which sleeps 5 at a reduced rate. It was the only left when we booked at the last minute. The owner was helpful, friendly and fair. Built in the 1950's the buildings are not modern but have so much charm. The renovating that is on-going is attempting to maintain "kiwi bach feel". It...

My friend and I stayed in unit 5. Very nice even though it wasn't 'lake front'. Still only a 25 m walk to the little beach. Unit was clean and tidy, simple but had everything we needed. Unfortunately the wind was blowing a strong westerly so we couldn't kayak (too choppy), but everything else about the stay was great!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Waitahanui Lodge is all about the kiwi bach experience. The original lodge was built in 1932 as a fishing lodge that by today's standards would have been fairly basic. In the 1950's a new lodge was built right by the lake's edge and close to the world renowned Waitahanui River. With renovations and upgrading the Lodge has up to date facilities and caters for today's travellers, yet the "kiwiana soul" of the Lodge remains. The lodge consists of 5 well equipped, self catering cottages, accommodating up to 5 guests. All linen is supplied. Absolute lakefront location can be enjoyed from two of our cottages while the others are just a few steps away. Our wonderful lakeside terrace provides the perfect spot for a barbecue or simply to enjoy a great sunset. Our on site tackle shop has waders and rods for hire plus all the fishing tackle needed to fish our local rivers for trout. ... more   less
