I stayed for a night here whilst stopping through on a journey and it is one of the best hostels ive stayed in. The welcoming couple, Elise and Marshal where a good start. The room was good with a double bed and shower and toilet right next to it. The kitchen is big and had good facilities. The hostel itself was quiet when I went there. We even had drinks with the managers in the evening. The Hostel is a 10 minutes walk into town and a trip up the hill is worth the view. The Hostel is situated off of the main road so can be noisy so bring ear plugs.

Stayed in twin bed private room - comfortable innersprung beds provided with sheets, pillows and duvets. Our room also had a couch and coffee table. Whilst this is an older house, the place is well maintained, warm and very clean. Facilities good, kitchen spacious. Staff friendly and very helpful. Thought there might be road noise at night, but hostel is set well back from road behind trees, so not an issue. Off street car parking provided. Hostel is within walking distance from town.

I had booked for 2 nights in this hotel but I finally stayed 4 nights. Elise and Marshall are very friendly and helpful. Big kitchen, living room. Very spacious and cosy room. 10 min walk to city centre and 15 min to Pack N' save.

We stayed here for two nights in a double room and it was quite nice for the two of us. It is quiet, has a nice common area, and is pretty walkable to most places you might like to visit. It is kept clean and people are friendly, and the price is good. Nothing spectacular but we would probably stay again.

We stayed here for a few nights in a private double room and were pretty impressed. The room itself was spacious, clean and had a comfy bed. There is plenty of room in the kitchen and free tea and coffee. There's some nice communal areas inside and out. The location is pretty good but it's a good 20 minute walk from the I-Site which is where we were dropped off by the bus. We found the owner to be pretty helpful. We hired bikes for the day which is pretty good value and found him to be nice enough. The bathroom areas aren't all that great and need a bit of tlc. Overall though I'd recommend the place.

At first I was quite hesitant to stay here because of some bad reviews of the place. However, being a regular YHA backpacker, I decided to roll the dice on this one and was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the hostel. I took a double private room, quite spacious compared to other YHAs. Communal bathroom was tidy with good hot water pressure. Best of all, location was excellent a stine's throw away from the city. At the end of the day, you can't expect five star services from a backpacker hostel. For what it's worth, I think YHA Gisborne is good value.

I was going to right a bad review about this place because the owner annoyed me so much but i thought better of it and decided to tell people that it did have some good things going for it, pat on the back for moral me. One thing just be prepared for clive, really is an odd, rude , disrepectful man. I am sure he was friendly and happy once, as I saw older photos of him on the wall in reception with his asian wife, incidentally she is very nice. Anyhow clive shouldnt be in charge of this place he seems to have lost any love he may have had for it and putting him in charge of customer service is wrong. Upon check in, everything seemed like such a bother to him even though it was daytime and not late evening like the other peoples reviews. Our friend stayed at the flying nun and

Liked: small hostel, easy to get to know people Disliked: no free salt&pepper in the kitchen, hostel seems to be very old, it's not very cozy in it, no atmosphere, it's kind of far from the city centre (20-25 min walk to the iSite), 27$ per night is too much for what it offers

We stayed in the private double room and totally enjoyed it ... yes, the building is a bit older, but well looked after ... the location is phantastic, just a few steps from the wine centre and the inner city, the dairy across the road is very handy too ... enough space to park and a well equiped kitchen ... the owners were very friendly and warm ... we definitely will stay there again on our next visit in Gisborne.

I stayed in this YHA for 2 nights and had a truly wonderful experience. The hostel is ideally situated, close enough to the town centre to be convenient but away from the noise. The staff were friendly and I received a warm welcome. I needed to do laundry and that was quick and easy. The room was comfortable and airy, and was as clean as the communal facilities. The hostel has a lovely deck where you can sit out and enjoy the sun, or some cool shade later in the day. There's a shop opposite to buy food and the kitchen was clean and functional. A great stay in a nice town - would definitely return.
