I stayed for one night back in March while on a 24 hour stopover in Auckland. I chose this hotel due to being a big craft beer fan, and wasn't let down by the quality of the ales available, some brewed on-site. Dianne, one of the managers, was an absolute star and I got far too little sleep due to... More

This place is old and tired. I'm just glad we stayed for one night. So many better hotels for similar price point. Rotten, stinky laundry in hallway is disgusting also. Don't bother as you'll just be disappointed like we were.

I loved the Old English feel of the hotel. The food in the restaurant was great and I liked being able to have a drink in the bar after I came in at night. The stairs were good to get the heart rate going :-) I was there for the World Darts Masters and it was only a short walk... More

We had booked to stay here for two nights the weekend of the Waiheke half marathon. What started out as a great first impression with beautiful character ended very quickly after the first night. We noticed a strange smell in the corridor to our room where blue bags of old laundry laid, it only got worse well we were here... More

Nice little pub which brews its own beer. They only had 2 of their own beers on tap, but they had about 4 or 5 different varieties in bottles. The barman told me it was $4-$5 cheaper if I took it away rather than drink it inside the bar! They had a good selection of other New Zealand beers as... More

We chose The Shakespeare for its great location to attractions and transport as well as its funky English charm. We made a friend in the manager and he was great! He gave us background info on the property as well as suggestions on where to go in NZ during our short stay (3 nights). I loved how there was a... More

Found the hotel to be great value. Rooms were clean, but the one we were booked into was very small so if you're staying longer than a couple of nights maybe you should request a room that isn't on the top floor (t's maybe a converted attic space?) Really close to town - obviously t's noisy on the weekends and... More

The hotel reception is also the pub's bar, and check in was quick and easy. Our room was in the attic and the room was quite hot and stuffy, the windows didn't open far , as we need to let them open, it was very loud. Almost no sleep, as it's so noisy outside.Room was fine, sparsely furnished , but... More

Attending a case at the District Court we went to the Shakespeare restaurant for a quick dinner. Had the calamari and chips, both very nice and the waitress was extremely pleasant and efficient. I had been there about 40 years ago so it bought back some memories. I think it's nicer now than what it was way back then.

I stayed at this place for 2 nights in Auckland. The room was okay, very clean and tidy but it was a bit small. The staffs there were nice. I enjoyed the dinner there as well, tasty but the problem was the portpotion - way too much for me. The best thing is the location - easy to connect to... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
