Staff made no effort to communicate the parking situation for the hotel. Staff were also unable to advise on where to park and how much it would cost. Room was very small, bed was uncomfortable and pillows provided were very hard. You're unable to use the kettle in certain areas of the room and not allowed to shower with the...

Only went for a meal with some colleagues on a flying visit to Auckland from UK, but we probably had our best meal of the trip here. Starters to share of Nachos and Shrimp Popcorn were incredible, followed by lamb shank was great - but the green lipped mussels with sweet thai sauce on my neigbours spot looked incredible -...

Great staff, very central and good place to use as a base to explore the CBD. Rooms are on the musty side, not sure if it's the carpeted flooring or the rusting metal on the balconies but it's the only concern I've had with the place. I kept the fan turned on to get some air circulation going.

The man on the desk (which is in the pub downstairs) was very personable and we had no trouble with him. There was only one instant coffee sachet in the room so we discovered in the morning. Couldn't be bothered asking for an extra. Had tea instead. No air conditioning. Very hot. And a noisy generator right outside the head...

Very nice Boutique hotel and Tavern. The Bartenders and help are all very nice and it is a cute tavern. They have a very good restaurant with plenty of food served. The only downside is the rooms are small with no elevator and the top rooms you need to watch your head as the roof and beams are very low....

We were staying nearby at a VRBO rental and popped in after a long day of hiking. The staff could not have been nicer and were very helpful with suggestions for the rest of our stay. Terrific selection of local beers and New Zealand wines. Small and very comfortable. Went there twice.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at Shakespeare Hotel. It is a basic, no-fuss hotel. The best part is the location - easy to walk all over downtown Auckland, to ferries, etc. We had a queen room on the very top floor (be warned there is no elevator). Our room was comfortable and clean but nothing much to write...

+ great location + pacious rooms + friendly staff - should inform people that doors don't automatically lock - not the most modern - bean bags smelled disgusting - badly placed chargers - one of the showers had a huge window facing another building in the stall But will recommend and stay there again

Found the Shakespeare Tavern almost by accident while walking around Auckland. Road construction had the place almost hidden. Good thing we did. Turned out to be a great stop for lunch and a few pints after negotiating the city. Service from the bar tender (mid-afternoon wasn't real busy) was super. He answered questions on menu items and the in-house brews,...

It's in a beautiful old building conveniently located in downtown. I'd stay there again, but maybe in a different room. We stayed in room 8, which is on the top floor, three floors above the street. Note there is no lift. The bed was comfortable enough. One of our three windows opened onto a catwalk of the fire escape. The...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
