Listed as a four star accomodation, it is far from that. If you would like to be talked down to, patronised, and made to feel like you are causing the hotel staff a huge inconvenience then this is your place. If you prefer to be treated with manners, go somewhere else. Arriving early on the first day we asked to...

Look, this place IS budget, there is no doubt about that. We chose to overlook all the signs as we researched on it beforehand and there's a pretty fair consensus that it is good value for money. It looks absolutely terrible from the outside and was not much better inside. They're doing reno work on the exterior of the building...

I stayed here for 4 days and have no complaints or regrets. Great location in the heart of the Melbourne CBD and a couple of minutes on foot from the tram stop, within the free tram zone. It's about a 5 minute walk from the sky-bus southern cross station drop point. The staff here are friendly and responsive. Rooms are...

We visit Melbourne, from Tasmania, several times each year and always stay at the Sophia. Great value and location. The rooms provide all that you need and are always immaculate. Having someone on reception 24hrs is good. Love the extras of good quality coffee in the rooms. The complimentary breakfast if you book with the hotel direct is a great...

Most affordable hotel I could find for my stay in Melbourne. Looks a bit dilapidated from the outside and reception very basic but my room was clean, well equipped and comfortable. Good, free wifi. Complimentary tea and milk which was nice. Very good location for city. Reception could've been a bit friendlier on check in but other staff were friendly...

This small hotel has an ideal location in Melbourne CBD. It's just a short walk to the bus station and not much more to the heart of the city. My room was in the back corner of the upper floor, so it was quite a quiet place to stay. The room itself was spacious enough and comfortable as well. The...

One of the most budget hotel in Melbourne CBD. Building has been under renovation hence does not look as nice as in the pictures. May have to ring the bell for a while before counter staff appears. Front door will be locked after 10pm or 11pm, so just go to the side door and press the buzzer to get a...

This is NOT a fancy hotel. Don't let the photos fool you. It's budget. The room was at the back of the hotel. It was clean. The bed was comfortable. The freezer in the fridge was so iced up the fridge door wouldn't shut and it was leaking all over the carpet. The hotel was cheap by comparison. The location...

This has been somewhat revamped. Still quite basic but great if you are only going to sleep here. Close to Etihad and Southern Cross Station. Be warned though it takes 3-4 business days to get the $150 security deposit back they take.

I have seen a lot of bad reviews for this hotel, but I didn't have a problem. The lady at reception wasn't all that friendly but the gentleman at night was very helpful. The room was small, but the bed was comfy and sheets were crisp and clean. There were a few scratches on the wall but I was only...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
