The Grand Chancellor Hotel Hobart garners accolades for its impeccable cleanliness and the inviting atmosphere that permeates its spaces, complete with relaxing live tunes and tasteful decor. Many guests extol the virtues of its prime location, with easy access to local attractions and scenic waterfront vistas, though it's worth noting that some have raised concerns about noise pollution. The staff's warm and attentive service is frequently highlighted, although a few inconsistencies are mentioned. While the hotel's amenities generally receive praise, particularly for their convenience and views, opinions are divided regarding the value, with some criticisms pointing to extra costs.

We enjoyed an extremely pleasant three night stay at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Hobart, on a summer visit to Tasmania from the UK. I’d stayed here many many years ago, when it was a Sheraton Hotel; my only prior experience with a Grand Chancellor hotel was Townsville’s Grand Chancellor, a few years ago. That stay was a positive experience, and contributed to our choice of this hotel.

The hotel has an enviable location, not only because it’s right on the waterfront at Constitution Dock, but also because it’s in the heart of the city, and very convenient for the wonderful attractions the city has to offer, especially Salamanca Place and surrounds.

We booked via the hotel’s website, and selected a Superior Harbour View Room because of reasonable prices.

Here’s what we particularly liked about the hotel:

1. As already mentioned, its location is perfect, within walking distance of Hobart’s prime attractions.
2. We arrived early, many hours before the scheduled check-in time, on a very early flight from Melbourne; we appreciated the room being ready and them that an early check-in was given. It was all effortless, without fuss... efficient and charming service from the front desk.
3. The corner room on the 15th floor (1530), recently refurbished I think, was very spacious, with a contemporary and stylish feel to it. There was dark wood accents in the well-lit and smartly appointed room. It’s best feature was, naturally, the huge picture windows with stunning views across Constitution Dock and the harbour area beyond.
4. The bathroom was adequate, though not spacious; it was spotlessly clean.
5. The room had most of the amenities we required: a comfortable bed, good pillows, and reasonable WiFi with good connectivity.
6. The public areas of the hotel are very spacious, including a lovely lounge area on our floor which provided more great views across the harbour and the city, and a pleasant spot to relax.
7. The hotel has all the facilities you would expect: pool, gym, bars and restaurants. We did not use any, apart from getting an early morning coffee at the restaurant prior to a very early tour.
8. The airport bus stops at the hotel, for ease of journeys to and from the airport.

There were a couple of things missing in the room: a security safe, and decent coffee machine. These days, most hotels offering ‘superior’ rooms make the effort to provide a coffee filter machine or a pod espresso machine; sachets of instant coffee no longer cut it!

We did have a couple of minor hiccups whilst at the hotel. The flush button on the toilet was broken, but was quickly repaired. And wrong dates for a tour were booked by the hotel’s concierge, but that was easily rectified by the tour operator.

I fully recommend this hotel as an excellent place to stay in Hobart.

Fantastic stay here. Love this hotel. We understand it has undergone progressive reno over the years and looks great now. Contemporary interior design and an amazing waterfront location. It is a large and impressive building with a vast and stylish foyer area. We chose a Deluxe waterview room and absolutely loved it. We stayed 4 nights and were quite sad to be leaving. The staff are friendly and efficient.

Our very spacious room was faultless with huge windows where we could gaze out to the 180 degree view of the waterfront below. There were so many thoughtful touches, such as adequate lighting (which seems to be so lacking in some hotels these days), great mirrors and lighting in the spacious bathroom. The bed and bedding was very comfy. We asked for softer pillows from the pillow menu which were brought to our room within 5 minutes. These were lovely. The shower was hot and strong and a minor point was that we noticed the hot water came through almost immediately early in the morning even though we were on the 17th floor. This is very impressive compared to some hotels.

We love this hotel and it is a no brainer that it will be our go-to hotel when in Hobart.

A little tip: If you don't want a big breakfast they have $10 tea/coffee and toast option which doesn't appear on the breakfast menu. It is nice to have breakfast at the hotel as there are only a couple of places around the waterfront that serve breakfast but also because it's pretty cold to go outdoors in the morning when you can just go downstairs to the very pleasant restaurant area.

Great location, right on the waterfront and just a short walk away from the city centre.

Arrived at the hotel around 9.30am and was able to check in to our room early which was fantastic. Allowed us to get settled before we headed to the Salamanca market. The person checking us in Ranjit, was very helpful and provided information about some of the local attractions, including the Salamanca Market, Farm Gate Market and MONA.

We booked a standard room, and according to the photos on the booking site we were expecting a room with the lighter wood coloured furniture, but when we entered the room, it was the darker colour furniture, which was the superior room in the photos.

The room was spacious and clean. The TV was large and had free to air channels plus a couple Foxtel sports channels. The ability to cast to the TV from your personal devices was good, so you could watch practically anything you wanted that you have access to.

The bathroom was OK size with a shower inside a small bath tub. The half glass screen did allow water to splash on to the bathroom floor a little but was manageable. The best thing was the water pressure of the shower was excellent and hot water was practically instant.

Robes were provided which we used to go to the pool, but we did notice there were no slippers provided so we were on bare feet when we went to the pool. Wasn't a big deal as we didn't have to walk far, but it's a nice to have.

The pool was indoors and the water temperature was a little cool. It would of been nicer if it was a few degrees warmer. Other guests I heard also say it was a little cold.

The self parking under the hotel was $10/day which was reasonable and easy to enter and exit. This was good as we had a car rental for 3 of our 5 nights.

Hotel provided free push bikes to hire, which we didn't use. But that was a nice touch for guests who'd like to ride around.

Overall a great hotel in Hobart. Definitely would stay here again and would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I spent a week in Hobart, and I did a lot of research to find the perfect hotel for our trip. From afar, it was hard to compare the different hotels, especially having never been to Hobart. There are so many seemingly cool boutique hotels, but we were there the first week of January when many places were already booked or prices were astronomical. So, I ended up booking the Grand Chancellor Hobart, and I couldn't have been happier with that decision!

After walking all over Hobart, we are sure that the Grand Chancellor's harbor view rooms have the very best views in the city. Hotels that are located on the harbor don't have the same sweeping views we had, and on days when there's a cruise shop docked, some of the hotels are looking directly at the ship.

The room itself was perfectly nice. It's an older hotel that has been refurbished in a smart way. The bed was comfortable and it was quieter than most hotels. The staff really went above and beyond. Everyone was always happy and helpful. The room service menu was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. Hobart has tons of good food, and we still found ourselves ordering from room service more than once because we enjoyed our meals so much!

Overall, this is a great hotel that I highly recommend (assuming you get a harbor view room). We would definitely stay here again.

(One thing to note: there isn't a safe in the room, though you can leave valuables in a lock box at the front desk. We were traveling with expensive computers but never felt worried leaving them unlocked in our room. If that's important to you, this may not be the hotel for you.)

We stayed at the Grand Chancellor in December 2019, and for our recent trip to Hobart we again chose the Grand Chancellor. We chose this for the central location in Hobart with walking access to the main shopping area, as well as to the docks and Salamanca Place. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Our room was excellent, and we loved our view of the docks and the harbour. We had breakfast in the restaurant on the 1st morning of our stay, but we were disappointed with this breakfast, as while it was a 'full' breakfast it was quite basic and not very tasty or 'good value for $'. We did not dine in the evening at the in-house restaurant, as there was nothing on the menu that appealed to us. At check out we were dismayed to be informed that there was a surcharge on a credit card payment. To me, this is 'penny pinching', and 'money grabbing', as in these times many payments are made per credit card. Despite the above criticisms, we would again stay at the Grand Chancellor, as the location and quality of room makes this a great stay

Room 1920 was immaculate and the view unbeatable. When we booked online there was not a harbour view twin available but we were able to upgrade on arrival - perhaps it's worth calling them about all available rooms?? Huge telly. The shower is over the bath but there is a handrail and they supplied a non slip bathmat for my 90yr old mother. We ate over the road at Mures - informal and good. The extras like valet parking, room upgrade, paying with a credit card and GST all added up - our one night stay was $303. Worth it! Staff all very professional. A great stay.

My stay at the Grand Chancellor in Hobart was fabulous. The check in process was smooth, fast and friendly and i was in my room very quickly. I had chosen a superior harbour view room which was on level 18. The view was beautiful a view right over the harbour and beyond and it provided a gorgeous sunrise to wake up to each morning, very comfortable seating also and a large room wide window meant i could sit back and watch boats enter and leaving the harbour from the room as well. The room itself was large and very well appointed, an extremely comfortable king size bed and even more comfortable pillow selection meant a wonderful nights sleep was guaranteed. A lounge and comfortable single chair and small coffee table were perfect to relax in and if you needed to get some work done there was also a good sized desk and very comfortable office chair to work from. A large smart tv with the option to cast programs off your smart phone, tablet or laptop from Netflix, YouTube and other tv and movie apps. The bathroom had a combined bath and shower with the bath deep enough to have a nice relaxing soak. The location of the hotel is perfect to explore Hobart from, especially all around the waterfront from Constitution Dock to Salamanca and further. The staff and service at the hotel were exceptional, any question i had for information on the local area, places to see, places to eat and drink were always answered with a smile and lots of helpful hints. I'd recommend the Grand Chancellor Hobart to anyone and definitely look forward to staying there again.

Pay for water
Expensive parking
Boring suite furniture
shocking little bath towels
Pillows uncomfortable without any options
The place uses Covid 19 to apologise for its bad service including no room make up unless you leave an unnoticeable sign on your door requesting room service. So we were able to request replacement of used towels at 5:00pm by special request but would not make up bed or clean up coffee cups etc and all for $400 a night. Forget this place

The hotel is situated across the road from the marina. We had a hire car and booking a hotel did rely on whether parking was offered onsite. Self park did cost extra and at the price of the room, I thought it was a bit rich to charge more, after paying over $300 per night, but the convenience of not having to worry about where to park each time we wanted to come into town was a plus. Parking is on a first come first parked basis. When full guests need to find parking elsewhere.

Check in and check out went smoothly, both staff members were friendly and helpful. The lift to the 18th floor was quick and we didn't have to wait long for it to arrive. The lift does not go down to the carpark, there are stairs, however staff will assist if need be.

We stayed in a 'city view' room. We had a small mountain view past the roof tops. Our room was spotless and very spacious. Big enough to spread out our bags and leave them open. The bed was really comfortable. The pillows were too high, but they have a 'pillow menu' and hubby ordered a flatter pillow. The little chocolate on the pillow was a nice treat. The bathroom was huge. The water pressure was great.

We needed milk for our tea and the restaurant were kind enough to give us a little jug of milk. Housekeeping were friendly, offering to make up our room as we left in the morning, but I had already made the bed, and all we needed was an extra supply of tea bags, which was provided quickly.

The hotel is walking distance to the surrounding restaurants, the city and Salamanca markets.

We didn't eat in the restaurant as nothing tickled our fancy and walked to nearby restaurants.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. There are lots of hotel options in the area so we chose one that was priced in the middle and seemed to have reasonable reviews. Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised with our choice. The lobby is huge but inviting. Check in was easy and staff were lovely. We paid extra for the harbour view rooms which I would highly recommend. It’s a beautiful harbour with plenty to look at. The rooms are quite large and although a little older they were well laid out and functional. Unfortunately we were caught in the Hobart 3 day snap lockdown. The hotel couldn’t have been more helpful at this difficult time. They quickly produced a great room service menu, negotiated a great rate for those needing to extend their stay and all done within an hour or two of the announcement. It was all handled extremely well. On the first night of lockdown they came around with a drinks trolley with a free drink for everyone and popcorn. Again, a lovely touch and extremely thoughtful. The location of the hotel is wonderful and I find it hard to fault anything. We will be coming back to Hobart in a few months to do all the things we missed and I wouldn’t stay anywhere else…

It's $60 for 2 courses and $70 for 3 for dinner (which is already sold out). Doesn't mention lunch on the website. Try giving them a call on 03 6235 4707. Good luck.

I received this response from the hotel: Good Morning, there are a couple of differences between our standard and superior room types. Our standard rooms are on the first two guest floors of the hotel, and have a walk in shower in the bathroom. Our superior rooms are on the higher floors of the hotel, and have a shower over bath configuration in the bathroom.
