Perfect location. Close to train station and within walking distance of major Sydney sites. Clean and quiet. Cafe below was run by hotel proprietor who was very friendly and helpful. Other fantastic cafes next door had some of the best dinners we ate in Sydney. I would definitely stay here again

Small hotel perfectly situated only a few minutes walk from Kings Cross train station.
Room was well equipped and comfortable and very competitively priced.
Overall it exceeded my expectations. I’d happily stay again and would recommend particularly to couples or singles.

VERY GOOD VALUE! Near Kings Cross - close to night life and bars, but far enough away that it is quiet and tranquil. Close to the opera house, transportation, tube stop. Not luxury, but very good value for money. George is very nice and helpful, and the breakfast is fantastic! Enjoyed your stay!

When I booked this hotel room I found that I had made a mistake and thought that I had booked with parking and had not. I had never driven in Sydney before and was absolutely shocked to find that I could not park even for a moment anywhere near this accommodation. When I rang the number and the chap rang me back George was really rude when he said to me "why have you got a car"? As if I was a total idiot is how it sounded. I told him because I wasn't staying in Sydney and would be getting out and about into the country and therefore obviously I needed a vehicle and as I had never been in Sydney before I had no idea about the parking issues. Haven't driven for some time from the airport to find the accommodation and finding the freeways etc extremely difficult to navigate and then absolutely no standing even in a vehicle anywhere nearby I was actually feeling quite stressed and was crying when I spoke to him and he informed me that there was no parking. He explains to me that the only option that I would have would be probably a car parking lot just around the corner. I realize that this was probably going to be expensive and said to him I suppose there is no cancellation on this room he actually hung up on me. I did not ask for a refund I just confirmed as per the booking.com website that I probably would not get a refund. Absolutely no need for this. All he had to do was say no I'm sorry there isn't and that would have been that. So I went and found the car park which was just around the corner as he had said. When I opened the door into the room I was overwhelmed by the smell of body odour. Room number 5. I opened the windows as there was one in the bathroom and one high up in the room which looked out to a concrete wall and held the door open with the one chair that was in the room. I sprayed my perfume everywhere to help get rid of the smell. I did sleep there for one night but decided the next morning to book elsewhere and packed up and left but not before seeing that the ants had got into my sweets. The bed was not particularly comfortable and there was only one spare blanket. Due to George's rude attitude and the terrible body odour, particularly on the pillows I definitely do not recommend.

Hotel 59 is clean, basic, definitely dated and yet a comfy place to sleep if like me your in Sydney sightseeing. Hotel is less than 5 mins from Kings Cross Station and 2 mins from buses into the city. There's everything you need locally from supermarkets, restaurants & nightlife. Definitely recommend If looking for affordable accommodation in Sydney.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this B n B online and as we were on a budget holiday, we decided to give Hotel 59 a shot for its reasonable rates, good location and complimentary breakfasts. We didnt go with very high hopes but boy were we pleasantly surprised! Yes, indeed the rooms were a tad small for our liking but I was incredibly pleased with the cosiness and cleanliness maintained by the owners. Our sheets were white and crisp, the room smelled fresh and clean and most importantly, the bathroom was maintained really well which was really crucial for me as I really cannot tolerate dirty, smelly and dingy bathrooms. In addition, the location of Hotel 59 was excellent, with the station within walking distance and major attractions nearby as well. And I just have to praise the owner George for his delicious daily breakfasts and great hospitality. On our first day of arrival, he gave us a rather detailed overrun of the places we should visit and the cheapest way to get around. All in all, I have to say I was really lucky to choose hotel 59 for my accommodation and would definitely go back to stay if visiting sydney again.

Fellow travelers, I know that you know the importance of friendly management at the places we stay, and I figure that like me, you don't like writing and maybe even decide not to pen a poor review when the proprietors have been pleasant and accomodating. But we all count on this website to give us a real picture, and overall, friendly management or not, Hotel 59 was easily the worst of all the 15 places I stayed in my Feb/March trip to Australia and New Zealand. It is run-down and dingy with stained carpeting, thin and cheap towels, tiny plastic lamps...and with not one ounce of the charm we associate with a B and B, but rather, it has the aura of a thid rate hotel. Like it or not, hotels have to renovate: George and his family have already purchased excellent mattresses which made for a very fine night's sleep, and I don't expect them to remodel the tiny bathrooms, but how about they spring for the lamps etc plus new linens, freshly painted walls, and a fresh outlook on what it takes to make people like me stop thinking "How on earth did this place ever get such good reviews on Trip Advisor!!!!"

Response from Bays, Owner at Hotel 59
Responded 16 Apr 2012
We are deeply disapointed to read that guest felt the need to add to previous review of the same stay [nice people, marginal accommodation] While we try our hardest to please everyone we do realise that hotel 59 will not be to everyones taste, i can understand a bad review if a guest experienced rudeness or a lack of service, but on this occasion some of these vitriolic comments are over the top considering we were pleasant and accommodating as you mention. Guest reviews Great stay![30 march 2012] Very pleasant stay [10 april 2012] were both in same room. Truthfulness demands that i add that all linen is brand new, painting in all rooms was done over 1 year ago, towels are bought from same supplier most other hotels use in our price range, cleaning is our top priority, carpets are cleaned regularly. In saying that we can not steam clean carpets while guest still occupying room what we do on these occasions with any coffee, wine or tea stain is a small spot clean. I am sure if guest had to look for accommodation again in Sydney you will see that for the rate we charge which includes free wifi and a complimentary cooked breakfast it is great value. Regards George

This hotel is what it says it is. It's cheap and clean and the owner is friendly. The rooms are small and basic but to be expected for the price. The decor could do with freshening up a bit as well.
However, we checked out before we'd even spent a night there. We went with 3 children and when exploring the area we found that the red light district was on the next street with strip clubs and sex shops prominent. It didn't help that the Explorer bus stop nearest the hotel was on this street thus making it unavoidable.
It is also a fairly long walk into the centre of Sydney - further than it looks on the maps.
There are some nice looking restaurants and bistros in the area but we didn't stay long enough to try them.
On the whole, if you are strapped for cash and want somewhere clean and cheap it's fine. But not for children or if you're not into basic with a capital B!

Response from Bays, Owner at Hotel 59
Responded 15 Oct 2006
Hotel 59 is not for some but it is for many as we have had many happy guests who always leave as friends, we also have many families stay who appreciate they can find an affordable place which offers a complimentary cooked breakfast in the rate [it saves them a lot of money] We are located in a residential street with a retirement village opposite us. I am sorry hotel 59 did not work out for this particular guest.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel 59. We stayed in a superior room designed for three people. The bed for the third was in its own little alcove. Everything was very clean. The room is a bit shabby around the edges, but overall comfortable and a good value. The location was great. About a 20 minute walk to the harbor and a 10 minute walk to the Kings Cross restaurants. We walked to Paddington in about 30 minutes. The only problem was some noise at night. The room was in the front of the house which may have been the problem. It got worse on the weekend. If you can sleep through a little noise, then it's worth it. The hot breakfasts are great and substancial. I would stay there again!

If you want to stay in the centre of Sydney, in a boutique hotel or somewhere ultra modern with room service look somewhere else. If you want a place somewhere with it's own identity, a place that feels like home and a place where you are looked after - stay here!
We stayed here at the beginning and end of our Australia trip with our four year old. It's a simple hotel with few frills and a great cafe for breakfast. Our room (with a kitchen) was large and cheap. George, the fantastically friendly owner, constantly works hard to keep the place spick and span!
The hotel is sandwiched between a laundry (very handy) and a brilliant Thai takeaway / cafe. Internet, bottle shop, doughnuts (for the 4 year old)can all be found up the road.
King's Cross subway is 5-10 mins walk away, so you're ideally placed to get into Sydney or out to the beaches (Bondi is the next stop on the opposite line). The nightlife is near enough for you to experience but far away enough for you not to hear it!
When we closed our door at night it didn't feel that we were in a hotel but more like staying at a friends house.
