A 20-minute drive from the airport is all it takes to reach our 40-acre natural sanctuary. 8 glass-fronted rooms sit on the banks of the Indus, capturing a panoramic view of the river, the local monasteries and the Trans-Himalayan range. The remaining space is kept natural and sympathetic to wildlife. The camp, close to Leh and local monasteries, offers a great base for exploring Ladakh, whilst staying in nature.

Lovely spot next to the Indus River. Our bird-watching friend found it the highlight of her whole trip. The food is amazing, of a quality I wouldn't have expected in Ladakh, especially in such a small place. The personal attention from the manager and staff is really wonderful

I went with my family over the end of July to the beginning of August - delicious food, friendly and welcoming owners, and an absolutely beautiful location. Nico and Mary were incredibly helpful and accomodating, especially as we had to change our timings a lot! My father got rather severe altitude sickness over the course of our stay, and everyone at Indus River Camp was incredibly helpful and supportive with navigating getting him help. An incredible experience, with friendly staff and guests, comfortable rooms, and above all an absolutely gorgeous location - near enough Leh to be able to explore there, but you really feel separate and with incredible views of the mountains.

My apologies for the late review. Nico, Mary, and Zigmet, you guys are gems who make the pretty place a home away from home. Leh being Leh needs the care of one's body and diet. Your diet would undoubtedly be taken care of if you are staying in Indus. Mary and her team would spoil you with healthy cooked local choices. I still miss her dessert; the sea buckthorn pudding was heavenly. Nico made sure we had the best route planned for our first Ladakh trip. We traveled during COVID and wanted to avoid the crowd. We are slow travelers; Nico understood us and helped us make the right choices. My family visited them again this year, only to be impressed further with Zigmet. Will see you guys again next years as we visit Leh again

A big shout to Nico, Jigmet, chef Ujjwal Bose, Salman…… Indus Valley Camp is a resort that is must for every traveler visiting Leh. This resort is complete in every aspect …… breathtaking views, cosy and comfortable room from where you can enjoy sunrise and Indus river, delicious food from chef Ujjwal’s kitchen and above all very friendly and courteous staffs. You can come here with your friends, family and alone to relax and spend time with nature. The resort surely give a camp like feeling with various plants around it. The resort is spread across 40 acres that gives an awesome walking experience. You can sit in the sit out area near the river and enjoy your tea coffee…. One can send hours sitting near the river and enjoy the calmness and serenity. We lived in chalet which has spectacular view of the river and the mountains, best was to view the sunrise sitting in your room on your bed. My little daughter enjoyed her time with Momo, the dog. Here in this resort you will be able to see various kinds of birds, red fox.

Had booked the place based on raving TripAdvisor reviews and was disappointed. Hope this paints a fair picture for Indian/International travellers. Travel dates - September last week, 2022. Firstly, the charges are steep for a property which is about 20 minutes away from Ladakh market. Which means that the logistics costs aren’t as high as is being projected. All grocery items etc are available at a stone’s throw away. The “river” is just an almost dried up, brown coloured tributary of “Indus”. The word “camp” doesn’t apply either cuz meals are not included and create hidden expenses. The view that is being used in all marketing communication etc. is the same that is offered by Leh (without having to pay almost 17k INR for 2 PAX). For that amount, one can book a Grand Dragon in peak winter and have a sumptuous time. They don’t provide airport pick-up/drop… You either book a cab yourself or pay around 1000/- for a trip. The food charges are higher than that offered by The Grand Dragon and The Abduz etc. so here’s hoping that the owners wake up and look around. The menu is fixed by the property without your inputs… Basic amenities like electric kettle, room heater are not provided. One can request for hot water which is provided in a thermos (during functional hours). The temperature reaches 0° and also minus at wee hours of the night, but heaters are not provided. So, what does a couple receive for 16k INR per night ? A 12-inch memory foam mattress for those of you who love sleeping in hammocks, a super friendly manager-owner duo, a room with four walls and a toilet cum shower with occasional hot water. Meals are not included in their charges. So one pays almost 1k per head for an average spread of lunch & dinner. Breakfast is also chargeable (approx. 500/- per PAX). P.S. Please check with the property before spending your hard earned money on this “camping” experience. Oh ! The Telescope doesn’t work either !!! All the best !! Cheers !

Response from Nico Toller, General Manager at The Indus River Camp
Responded 9 Dec 2022
Hi, I'm really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. We try to be clear about what kind of property we are but sadly, it isn't for everyone. I hope your review and our response are instructive for people thinking of visiting. As a boutique/nature property, we offer an alternative to the larger hotels, rather than an equivalent. We have a 40-acres of natural land with just 8 rooms, by the river (which is the Indus!). We have a personalised service and comfortable rooms with a unique view within Leh. We work hard to maintain the peace for our guests and not to disturb the resident wildlife. These are our primary considerations. We don't even allow outsiders to come for lunch or dinner so that it doesn’t interfere with our guests’ experience. I'll try to avoid becoming overly defensive, but there are some things in your review that aren't completely accurate, so I think it's important that we put them forward. You stayed in the last week of the season when the temperature drops quickly. It wasn’t yet 0 degrees, as the first frost came after. Our rooms are well insulated and the thermostat indoors was showing 18 degrees Celsius. We provide hot water bags and extra blankets, but you said that your child can't sleep under a duvet or any cover. During your stay, the other guests didn’t want the extra blankets as they were warm enough. A couple of them have reviewed us since. We don't have heaters, as they wouldn't work on the voltage where we are. We could use a large generator to keep on at all times, but instead, we prefer to work with our current system which most of our guests appreciate, as it's less noisy or environmentally destructive and, for the week of the season when it's colder, they have the warmth of the blankets and hot water bags. The kettles aren't possible at our voltage so instead, we fill boiling water in thermoses and replace them any time between 6 30am and midnight. A thermos stays hot right through the night into the morning. Your booking was one without meals. You can book with breakfast, or with dinner, but you booked for the room only, so I don't think it's fair to classify meal charges as "hidden expenses". As for the pricing, there are very significant costs with running a property with spread-out rooms on a large piece of land for just 4.5 months of the season. The reasons for this are extensive, so instead, I'll say there are two directions that we could go in which might appeal to you, but I think our existing demographic would be unhappy if we chose to. One is to add another 20-40 rooms, which would allow us to operate like a large hotel with the same amenities, but we feel that this would detract from the peace, not to mention the impact that it would have on the land and wildlife. Another is to keep the 8 rooms and become a high-end luxury property, like Chamba Camp in Thiksey, which has 20 rooms but charges 70k per night. Our food charges are actually lower than the Grand Dragon. There is a lot online about our food, so I don't want to go on too much, but all of our food is prepared fresh for each meal. We don't do a-la-carte as we want to make fresh food - if you do a-la-carte menus with just 8 rooms, you cannot make fresh food daily. This year, we will be working to have more choices within our set menus. No one (including Grand Dragon) in Ladakh provides airport drop or pick-up. The taxi union forbids it. You aren't allowed to go in your own car, it has to be via a taxi. As for our view, it's subjective but most of our guests prefer a view of the river, the mountains, Shey Palace and Thiksey Monastery to what you have in Leh, which is of the mountains behind a rapidly developing city. Similarly, our beds have thick mattresses with toppers and high-end linens – we usually get really positive feedback from this, but we all have different preferences. I would like to say that our telescope does work! It's primarily for viewing the moon, but the moon was set at that time and it was a cloudy night. There has to be something visible for us to be able to use it. In Ladakh, the best thing is the open sky. We absolutely minimise light pollution so that you can see the milky way with the naked eye. When the moon is around, its brightness can negate this, so the telescope is more of a consolation so that you can see the Moon in more detail on the days that you can't see the Milky Way. Thank you for your feedback and review. We do take it seriously and I think it's really helpful that people are well-informed. Properties like us aren't for everyone and we want to make sure that we get guests who appreciate what we offer. Regards Nico

Dear Swapna, Thank you for writing so nicely about your stay. It was a pleasure to have you at the property and it makes us so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at the end of the season. The weather got a bit cloudier for a short while after you left, so I'm really glad that you got to see the Milky Way clearly. In September, when it's clear, Ladakh has some wonderful skies. All the best from Nico, Jigmet and the team.

We didn’t have to think twice before selecting The Indus River camp as our stay in Leh. We heard Leh lacks Oxygen but this place did not. Warmly welcomed by Jigmet, we acclimatised for one day on the banks of the river Indus. We were served the best food by the Chef and Mr Salman. We enjoyed having Kawah, waiting for the moon to rise from behind the mountains. We enjoyed our time collecting Pebbles from the river Indus and doing a breathing exercise session by the river. Nico also helped in our permits for the Nubra valley. Thank you Jigmet for the Apricot jam and the flowers seeds. We are thankful to all the staff for making our stay a memorable one.

Two things make this property class apart 1) is it’s location and 2) Ms Jigmet who manages it. Although a 20 minute drive out of the city this property is just worth checking it. Great food, superb rooms and outstanding service (thanks once again to Jigmet who ensures that everything that you need is looked into). The service levels are par excellence I’ve seen in any hotel across India so far (even the five star hotel fall behind on this aspect). Tip: Choose this on day one and day two of your stay in Leh when you need to relax and get acclimatised to the high altitude environment as anyway if you are in Leh city you won’t venture out, that way this hotel will make it an ideal place to relax (away from Leh city) for those first two days.
