Detailed Reviews
What a magical place to stay this was, for many different reasons. It is an Ayurveda healing centre rather than just a hotel so we booked in for a package including two wellness therapies over two days. The rooms are actually small cottages and ours was perfectly located so that we could have tea on the balcony each morning, and watch the distant Himalayas emerge as the sun rose. A truly spiritual experience, and awesome. We had a log stove in our cottage which was much needed as there was a mountain chill in the air. There is a Ayurvedic hospital on the site just up the road which is where we had our wellness therapies. We had no specific problems so these were Ayurvedic general wellness massages undertaken by two people working together in a synchronised fashion to a very specific routine. We really did feel better afterwards, and slept very soundly. The service and food was wonderful too. The young man who seemed to be in charge spoke good English and was brilliant. Sadly I do not remember his name. Mrs Pooja Mansoor was incredibly helpful as we planned our package in advance and we were sorry we were unable to meet her during our brief visit. Our stay was one of the highlights of our whole holiday and we cannot recommend the AyurVAID Kalmatia highly enough. We left feeling much better mentally, spiritually and physically, and would love to return. So much more than simply a couple of nights B&B.

This place is a hidden gem. These a beautiful cottages with lovely views. We stayed at Achal that was not Nanda Devi view but I am not complaining. Cottage is impeccable neat and comfortable with amazing sit outs. With both Bukhari and Room Heater functioning it was nicely warm. What stands out is staff. The cook went out of their way to make everything we asked for. Food is delicious. They full filled all our requests with smiling face. They bonfires they made specially for us every night made out stay worth remembering Therapist were excellent. Never thought authentic Kerala massage will be available on top of Himalayas!!Overall ambience and feel of property is superb. I heavily recommend the place.

Great place to relax and receive ayuvedic treatments. Beautiful nature views. Un clear days Nanda Devi is visible.
I stayed for a 10 day yoga retreat. Staff is very kind, food delicious, rooms clean, views are great, and the ayuvedic massages are amazing.
The temple is a short walk.

It is a nice property well located, and you can see Himalayas from your cottages. The cottages are also nice. The downside in this property is the food:- the food here is is below average with limited choice. We stayed here for two nights and the food options were same for both the days, which is daal, aloo, gobhi capsicum and chapatis ( half cooked). It seems that it is under staffed and the dinner closing time is 8:30 and if you you are late then you have to eat cold food in the winters ( that is not a very nice feeling). Housekeeping needs a lot of improvement linen cleaning and quality at this hotel is is below per standard. Since it is an ayurvedic spa resort we also taken massage therapy which was also ok and I think was great about it. So don't expect much except the Views of Himalayas.

I was looking forward to staying at this resort for 4 nights with my wife, 2 kids and a maid. Though the follow up before reaching was apt, separate arrangement done for the maid etc but the worst nightmare came true within hours of checking in. We had an emergency back home and had to check out first thing in the morning - the resort didn't let us do that without paying 100%. The manager, a British citizen, clueless of how the service industry operates threatens me of dire consequences if we do not pay up. On demanding to see the owner, Detier, a German by origin, he refuses to meet!! with an answer that we know how to handle these situations...
Hello, this is RACIST, being told that this is a normal situations with Indians and we know how to deal with, I felt helpless in my own country. Scared with my wife and kids, I had to call up people in Delhi, dheradun and the SP of Almora reporting the incident so that my family was safe and no harm came to them. I felt helpless with wife and kids in such a situation.
This is not all, while making the bookings we informed that our two small kids are traveling with us and proper arrangements need to be made for a electric kettle ( expected to be in the room ) and clean toilets etc basic requirements were not met. Refusing to serve food for kids in the cottage was another shock to me with an argument that the linen gets dirty!! This is the last thing I expected while holidaying in my own country.
I waited for the dawn, let them keep the advance that was almost 60% of total bill for 4 nights including all meals etc and left the resort.
I would request families planning to stay here to be on a high alert, the britisher and the German are insensitive to situations, inflexible and arrogant - not expected in hospitality industry and especially in INDIA. Also, this place is not KID FRIENDLY.
I have travelled around the world, stayed with the top most luxury hotels And resorts - never seen this attitude and outlook.
Be careful while booking at KALMATIA SANGAM.

Response from NyimaDouglas, Manager at AyurVAID Kalmatia
Responded 23 Aug 2011
Our Cancellation policy was I believe the major issue. Kalmatia Sangam is a ten room boutique hotel, off the beaten track, with limited peak season and hence our cancellation terms have always applied especially for last minute cancellations Wanting to cancel last minute during our main summer season the guests were politely told that our cancellation policy (already given) would apply. I strongly object to the term “racist and that I threatened them with dire consequences”. At Kalmatia Sangam we value a friendly and personalised relationship with our guests.

Just came back from a trip to Kalmatia Sangam last week & I must say the location is truly “magical". It has the most breath-taking view and each cottage is superbly located doing maximum justice to the location. However the management is disappointing! While Neema (the caretaker of the property) extends a hospitable welcome, pretence “Hospitality” seems to be the concept. So if I was paying 3-4 k a night, the current state of the resort would meet my expectations- but for exclusive pricing the remote management would not do !
To start with the resort pays little attention to cleanliness – while our 2 day stay we stayed at 2 different cottages & the linen in both had not been changed /properly washed. The second night we actually found hairpins in the bed!!
For charging 700 + taxes a meal per person - I believe a qualified chef should be supervising my meals. Undercooked eggs , tasteless meals was what we had to cope with. In 2 days they actually managed to serve the same non-veg dish twice – variety not being a factor while planning any meals ! And last but the least – you don’t expect them to fleece you when you have agreed to be paying a good amount for stay . We wanted to hire a cab for a local trip for 4 hrs & got it done through the resort . While we were told not to pay the cabbie directly, while dropping us he insisted on the payment & we had to oblige. The surmising part is that when we were settling the final bill – the cab price was included ( 150% of the amount charged by the cab) . This surely took us by surprise coz a service tax on Rs 1000 can surely not be Rs 500 !
Overall I had great expectations & have been so disappointed with the experience.

Hi all, I visited Almora and stayed at Kalmatia Sangam with my family in Cuckoo and Hoppe during April 1st and 2nd 2010. The hotel is NOT for travelers who want to mix nature with pleasure. The hotel location is good, and you can see the Himalayas on a good day from the balcony. But the view is not as unobstructed as they claim. You also see a lot of shanties around the property. As for serenity, the first night we have listened to Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani songs from the local village. But the overall property experience is in accordance with the price.
However, the food quality is really poor. They do not have non veg other than in the dinner (which is clearly written), but we had an option of a chicken biriayni in one dinner and a tasteless mutton on day two. That’s all, no other non veg. They served a bread for breakfast, (may be organic, but this is not my first experiment with organic stuff. Organic food or healthy food does not mean tasteless food.) that I can certify is the worst tasting bread I had ever had in my whole life. I can re-iterate the menu for each and every meal I had there. As this resort was my selection, my wife and son kept on teasing me about the food through out the two days of our say in there. Yes, I do agree that a lot of people have written greatly about the food in the comments book and someone also coined it as “great” in front of me while I was there, But seriously I really feel pity for the guys who finds this food “great”. The second night dinner had roti, dal riata, pumpkin curry, methi sag (with a very natural odor, which is a sure symbol of no masala) and the half boiled mutton. If I am boasting, then I am doing it, but I eat the same number of items with better taste at home every night for dinner. Sure guys, who ever enjoys this tryst with nature, may go ahead but I am adding a serious caution for the “Orange County”, “Club Mahindra” type of family travelers like me.
The attitude of the stuff is strange (not poor, I would say and for a reason). An example, we reach there at around 1 pm, and no power in our cottage. When I call about it the manager asks me “Do you need power?” (Exactly the same words, I would not forget it for at least couple of years now). I insist and the generator is switched on in 10 minutes. For the kind of money they charge this is a pathetic attitude. I have paid and I want the geyser and lights working all the time. Hence, I categorize it as an “attitude problem as the power is supplied, not “poor service”.
Another example, when I booked over phone from Bangalore, they asked for a full payment in advance in the form of a bank draft for holding the booking. The moment I put my foot down, it was 50% with a bank account number. I should have learnt my lessons then.
Overall, I would suggest that people like me, who can be qualified as urban leisure travelers, who wants value for money (ready to pay more money but then expect more value in return), with pampered kids who expect a pizza or pasta in dinner during a vacation, should simply stay away from this place. People traveling with parents or elderly guys MUST also do the same. From the cottages mentioned above the dining place is a flight of about 50-60 steep stairs.
I would also like to mention that I reached Kalmatia from Holms Farm Heriage Resort at Ranikhet. Kalmatia guys should go and stay there for a day or two to understand the meaning of the word hospitlity.

I wanted to stay in Kalmatia Sangam for a day or two, however, the place is very cumbersome, seems to be a property inside a devastated village. Rates for per night stay is too high without any logic, no views of himalayas or any other mountain from that place. Staff shows high attitude and non courteous. If you want to spoil your holidays, go there or else simply avoid the place!!

Response from Narendra R, Manager at AyurVAID Kalmatia
Responded 4 May 2013
I believe you have posted this review against the wrong property. Or your intentions are far from honourable. Certainly we have had no-one by your name stay with us. Also, a quick look at our other reviews will attest to the fact that we are not located inside a “devastated village”. In fact, we are located on a 14 acre estate of pristine forest land situated on a hilltop and enjoying some of the best mountain views around. We note that you have newly joined the Trip Advisor community, this week in fact. It would be prudent to point out that improper use of this service is not approved of and would kindly request you read their guidelines before posting again in the future.
